As a Western listener, I have for 50 years always been drawn irresistibly to the music of Ali Akbar Khan, and now, I know, of the "Maihar Gharana". Can anyone illuminate what it is about this particular gharana that stands out? Can this be explained in non-technical language?
Yeah "non technical" is the ans to ur ques.. the gharana explores the soul of a raga rather than going into technical improvisations of the raga.. this definitely stands out.
In the Maihar Gharana, there are subtle and not so subtle differences in both the technical & ethereal quality of this school. Allauddin Khansaheb had contact with a certain English music teacher, although this is rarely mentioned. Greensleeves is often performed in Raag Bhairavi giving a nod to this historical influence. There are certain harmonic influences in the music, that other Ghanrana's don't have, this might be why Pandit Ravi Shankar and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan were popular in the west. The more one learns about this Gharana the more respect one has for it. The only way to understand it (If one ever does) is to play it. Endless, timeless, but fun.
@@mmypainting There's an Ali Akbar Khan performance (probably more than one, but one I'm familiar with) where he weaves a Bach bouree into the raga he's playing. I can't remember offhand which rag it was. But it corroborates your point.
i am willing to share some of his recordings..also recordings of other maestros as well..but how can i share?i don't have any idea regarding sharing on you tube..will be grateful to you if you help me in knowing the procedure of uploading in youtube..
Please, be kind enough to learn how to upload (it is easy). Bahadur Khan personifies the grace and glory of the Indian tradition. Waiting for your upload.
I was a disciple of Ustad Bahadur khan and now missing since 1989
The sound of his Sarode is so sweet and divine, as if the universal spirit is musing at his own creation.
