Part 3 in our active pickup series - now we build one!
Many pickup builders will dabble in the mainstream pickup designs of the 50s, but few venture to the more modern designs, such as the active pickup. They were first commercially available in 1976. The active humbucker has been a staple in the metal and hard rock community since their introduction due to their clinical clarity, low noise design and high output.
Um, active pickups have an amplifier in them hense the need for a battery, duh!!!!!!!!
Thanks for your contribution.
I honestly thought there'd be more to active pickups than a built in buffer, like I don't know, electromagnets instead of fixed magnets or some capacitor magic like a condenser mic.
Great content! I also started building passive pickups a couple of years ago :) Really interesting to see how active ones are made!
Finally there's a decent video that show how it's done with active pickup. So that means, It is possible to take regular pickup and make it active. By the way, where is the "digging in the guitar for the battery box placement" part?
My only concern would be how overwhelming it would be. A regular Hotrail already has ridiculous output, so adding a boosting preamp would almost make it untamable.
@@josephfigueroa3527 You can adjust the circuit gain by swapping the negative feedback resistor so it has less gain
Is it possible to reverse phase, 1 of 2 single coil active pickup? Or its a no go
Very interesting! I want to make a regular humbucker with 4 wires active. What kind of operational amplifier is used in your circuits? Thanks.
We use TL071.
really cool video showing the full build of active pickup but the sound check was terrible. Maybe record it through interface it should be a lot better than crappy mic from camera. thanks for the boomer bands :) have a great day

Thanks for making this, it was really interesting; there's so many videos out there on how to build PAFs and vintage Strat coils but this is the first I've come across for actives.
I happen to be looking for an active EMG p-bass pickup right now, it would be awesome if you could do a video on how those are made/building one!
We can delve into active bass pickups at some point. I'd anticipate they're made much the same way, with each humbucker coil in the separate halves of the P bass pickup.
Would it be possible to use bobbins with slugs instead of the bars? I have some 8 string slug and screw bobbins but I can't find any bar bobbins that would be long enough for an 8-string.
Make your own...
Can I get the pcb separately? Thank you for making this a reality regardless. Did the preamps on my own in the past and was a nightmare.
It's only sold as part of the kit, unless you wanted to purchase in bulk.
great work mate!! love the content, keep up the good work :D
can you only get the one voice from the pcb or are there other frequencies that can be obtained?
It would have to be modified to achieve different tone shaping.
Yes yes yes ❤
Are these do it yourself kits for sale on your website. I would like to put a few together myself
They will be very similar to this. We have to get the PCBs and safety certifications in line before we can launch the product.

Where do you get the preamps?
They're our proprietary design made by us.
@Alegree OK I guess I just won't be lazy And just make my own then. Thanks!
