There were literally no instructions on the package mine came in, just a picture of the blade release with an arrow. Didn’t even mention the blade storage compartment. Thanks for the “how to”! Happy now!

I was given one of these knives as a gift. I'm glad I didn't spend my hard earned money for it. I agree with most of the negative comments on the product.

The quick change blade removal problem is a known issue. I have just taken mine apart and fixed the mechanism. Unfortunately, the plastic side with the release mechanism is held on with two screws and welded plastic posts. Once you remove the sides, they will not be able to be secured except by the two screws. The release mechanism is a lever that activated a second lever. The first lever is too loose on the fulcrum and slips past the second lever making it impossible to remove the blade. There is also a VERY small spring under the first lever that you may lose if you intend to open the knife. I couldn't come up with a "fix" to this design problem but now that I see how it works, I can make it work if I use the mechanism carefully. I have read that DeWalt has recognized this problem and there is a newer version that corrects the issue. Not sure however how you can tell which one you are buying. Other that this major fail, the knife is nice to use and fits the hand perfectly. There is an Amazon review where one person has posted photos of the lever and plastic retaining part. It was a big help to me to figure out how this was supposed to be assembled and helped me figure out the mechanism so I can make it work (most of the time).

Some of the simplest tools still need a how to. Was baffled about how to change the blade on this. Cheers.

      1. Push the upper button forward to the end.
      2. Press the small black iron piece down down down to the end with the index finger instead of the thumb, so that it is easy to replace the blade.

@@DavidLee-tg6ht Do you know how many blades does it come with when you buy it ? And is the first blade already in or has to be installed ?
I ask as I am able to put the first blade in and only see 4 blades including the one I put in the blade... while the package says total 5 blades

the knife is prone to jamming but it holds onto the blade and gives me more leverage compared to many other knives i used, even sturdy enough to beat some nails back into place.

I have a few Stanley fatmax utility Knives but did purchase one of these to fit in one of my veto pro pac bags as it is slightly sliimmer and lighter than the stanleys. Have to say that I like the knife, not had any issues with changing the blades............time will tell !

I can't release my blade, DeWalt's video doesn't even show how to change the blade, your's is new but I want to change my FIRST blade and the thing is stuck. How a bad design ruined the otherwise promising knife.

The knife is a tad tricky at first for a couple of reasons. First, the Stanley version of this knife has a self-feeding blade, this DeWalt knife doesn't. Secondly, you have to take out a new blade from the handle and insert it in the knife, not only do you have to do this initially, you have to do it going forward with each blade change. Just open up the top cover in the handle (push the yellow button on the bottom of the handle) and take out one of the 5 blades and then manually insert it in the front of the knife. The key here is to have the button that you push forward and back to engage and retract the knife blade, has to be in the forward position. Then you just push the blade in a little bit and it snaps into place. To remove the blade, you push the blade out and push down on the little black tab on the side of the knife and pull out the blade. You don't have to push down the black tab to insert a new blade, just to remove a blade. (Those are the only directions they have on the rear of the package, is how to take out the blade.) This is a beautiful, well balanced knife that is heavy duty. The ergonomics of the knife are excellent!

      Wd-40 into the blade area.
      It will release the rust/corrosion.
Then press the little black button near the tip of the handle.
Yes, the overall design is trash.

I bought it and tried to install the blade. It fell inside and the top button just slides back and forth and doesnt move the blade. tried the side switch and every combination to get the blade to come out. Had to work at it to get the blade to fall back out and kept retrying. I will return it tomorrow. Your video was helpful to show me i got a defective one.

This thing didn't even last more than one cut, then the blade jammed inside of the knife. I removed the screws and had to play with it for a while to determine that the way to open the housing after removing the screws was to pull down on the lower yellow grip (with DeWalt imprinted on the sides). I was to get it working, but it's only a matter of time. This knife is a disappointment.

Any amount of moisture on the knife to not release the blade.
Throw it away and purchase a different brand.

This knife stinks! You will be lucky if you don't cut off one of your fingers trying to get the first blade in. After a few tries it gets a little easier. I can buy two of the trusty old Stanley utility knives and a pack of blades for what I paid for this hunk of scrap metal! I should have saved my receipt.
