How to Restring an Acoustic Guitar (Epiphone Hummingbird)

- I decided to play with my new camera and make a short video on how to restring an acoustic guitar. I've watched other videos on how to knot the string on the machine head but (in my opinion) my way is the easiest. I hope this helps someone. Please give feedback and ask any questions. I've been playing guitar for 16 years so I must have learnt something in that time! :o)
I use Guitar Toolkit app as a tuner. - Навчання та стиль
I just want to say I hated having to change my strings, so I always paid a Guitar store to do it for me,after watching your video I love to do the strings myself now, I really hope people that are just starting out with a guitar, watch this video, because it will teach you everything you need to know about changing your strings on any guitar!
Thank you!!! I am a newbie and broke a string on my brand new epiphone-this video helped and saved me money!! Thanks
A bazillion thanks for this very helpful tutorial vid which helped me a lot while restringing my Hummingbird for the first time. I'd like to add some thoughts which came to my head while restringing my guitar if I may, ok?
- do not push out the nuts which hold the strings on the lower end if they resist to pop out while pushing them from the inside - instead, use a dull nipper and pull them out carefully and without damaging them or the wood from the outside. It's easier this way and you do not risk to break your guitar's wood coating.
- do not tune the strings while stringing, do this later when the strings are put on and tune from low to high steadily, so you do not risk to overstrain them
- do not kink the strings too hard while attaching them to the peg, do it lightly, as shown in the video. Also, do not knot the strings to the peg. If you have to knot them, don't make the knots too tight and don't do it while you are restringing - you will overstrain and break the strings. Instead, knot them after restringing and tuning. Then, cut the loose ends.
- always buy two or more string packs of the same brand in case of broken strings (I broke two which was my own fault because I knotted to tight and tuned (too high) while stringing).
Thanks for the comment. Glad I could help. I think i'll make a shorter version with just the knot. It's so easy and leaves the head-stock look nice and tidy.
Straight to the point tutorial
nice work:)
Nice hummingbird I have an EJ200 and thinking of changing
great tips, really easy to follow
realy very helpful for the peoples like us.. thanks a lot..
hope we get good tutorials like this..
again thanks
Nice creative angle at 07:46. I'm with you that locking the strings straight up without slack and extra winds works perfectly well but I'm assured it improves intonation and string slippage! Also, what happened to the bridge pins? Thanks for the video 👍
Thanks for the video - really helpful
finally found someone actually doing it not just talking about restringing :) thanks a lot!
You know you can buy a String Winder and Cutter device, for about five quid, that makes winding the machine heads really quick. You can just spin it round with one finger.
they're really useful
I've just bought an Epiphone Hummingbird but the 12's are killing my fingers as I've been playing electric for about 15 years (my daughter took my Ibanez AW50) I persevered with the 12s for a few weeks but I've given up. I must say your way of doing things is right to the point, no string winders etc etc just your hands,... cool, And you don't use wire cutters to remove the strings, take 'em off and save them for that time when you may need a string to replace a broken one,,,well done.
Nice to see 9 years on this video is still helping. Thanks for the comment.
Where are you from? @@Cerid01
Thanks, very helpful
7:37 Looks Like Chaplin by Stereophonics
That's really nice
@samhel6 the type of strings you choose will definitely have an impact on the tone but only a Gibson will sound like a Gibson.
I have this same guitar and I have broken about 3 strings now while trying to restring it myself. Is it just because the tension in the pegs is too much?
Nashville Tuning is also worth addressing
It's called guitar toolkit. Thanks for the comment :)
can i put not the same strings? like the gibson hummingbird strings... will it sound like the gibson?
If you don't mind me asking, why do you have 4 metal bridge pins and the other 2 made of different materials? Good video, by the way.
Matthew Stephens Hey, thanks for the comment. Simple answer, I've lost the two so just used what I had in my bits box.
No problem. Good to have spare bridge pins.
If I am just replacing one of the strings can I use this same method? Seems like I would have to remove all the strings just to get to that one.
As long as the other strings have been strung uniformly, you should be able to change one string.
I ended up replacing all the strings because of the way they were originally put in but I’m glad I did because the strings sound much better than the originals. Your video helped a lot thank you!
I noticed your bridge is wooden, unlike mine which seems to be made of plastic. Was that a custom job?
I have the Epiphone Dove Pro, which is very similar, and the bridge is wooden. It isn't custom.
Hi the song at the end, is Looks like Chaplin?
I just swapped the factory strings on my new DR100 for 10 gauge Elixir Polyweb and it sounds 100% better.
You should change the plastic nut and saddle to the bone. Those will improve sound too. Also you can replace the pins with ebony pins.
You need a string winder, unless you just didn't use one for the sake of demonstrating re-stringing in it's most basic form.
uh but my guitar doesnt have those pegs
The white saddle bit came out when i did this WHAT DID I DO?? it's not broken or anything- it just came out clean. (i have the epiphone hummingbird pro)
Really nothing to worry about the strings hold it on. Just put it back the same way or the Intonation will be wrong.
the thing is though- when i try to put it back in, it's not snug and secure in there it wobbles and comes out easily. I think there's a pickup wire in the slot too so i'm not sure??
Ah ok, yeah as long as you haven't messed with the pickup you'll be fine. It will stay firm once you put the first string on.
ok if you say so c: i'll let you know when my strings get here. thanks
Did it work out for you mate?
He is restringing it wrong.
WRONG, first of all never used home brand polish its not good for the guitar, second thing use a string winder its much faster, third thing get the real GIBSON HUMMINGBIRD its another £700 OR more yes but well worth it :)
Lol not worth it considering gibson owns epiphone...
Lots of great tips!
