It's also the complete lack of a real comedic identity. It's a crap amalgamation of Tommy Cooperisms, Two Ronnie's-isms, Smith and Jones etc peppered with their 'impressions of impressions'
That show is so surreal, like a liminal nightmare. I remember seeing it as a kid, and never laughing once, just wondering if they're NPCs or people that had been bodysnatched.
Mavis was a deliberate comic grotesque character created by the writers on Coro. So Les Dennis 'creates' a comic character from a...comic character. He's either lacking even a crumb of imagination or he's thoroughly unable to read creative intent.
Wow, I never knew Les Dennis' Mavis impression was a fragment of a whole extended spoof he used to do with another guy. I literally just thought it was a random impression he did on Family Fortunes when he didn't know what else to do - no wonder it seemed so weak in that context.
The whale fishing joke was a Mike Reid bit, they basically tried turning his one liner into a sketch. To be fair Mike sells it a lot better then that. I think it's strange they dressed as Teddy boys just for that joke. It just doesn't make any sense, may of been better if they was builders or milkman perhaps, not that the joke would of been any funnier that way but it just seems a pointless gimmick being Teddy boys.
Not fuckin wrong about Abbot. It was like watching someone puke their curry up, but it was the only guy in a kilt doing it. Really was the only representation. Unfuckinbelievable
Sincerely interested in why the Limster is so keen on Les Dennis. Is it just a cosy memory thing? Cos the stuff played here is bereft of anything worthwhile - and I like Les Dennis too. He's just shite. Family Fortunes was ok.
He was funny in the Ricky Gervais thingy. I always found his Mavis impression really annoying. He wasn't very good at impressions. My theory is that the comedy couldn't be too hard hitting because we were still recovering from the trauma of the war.
Saturday night telly was never meant to give big belly laughs, I think because TV was labouring under the notion that a family show had to be as benign and vanilla as possible; so the programs morphed into this strange breed of wallpaper entertainment - something bland to play in the background to dull the edges of an evening stuck indoors.
I reckon he lights them in his pockets so as not to waste any of it as he brings it to his mouth 🤔 I’m reaching but can’t think of anything else although now I’m writing this it makes no sense 😂
Russ Abbott was ahead of his time, he was doing non comedy before it was trendy
Would be good if Limmy did an analysis of Big Break with Jim Davidson.
Its only a game 😉
yer no wrang
Definitely. 😀👍
"Pot as many balls as you can"
Will Limmy be able to understand such a complex game?
The problem with Big Break with Jim Davidson is that it contains Jim Davidson.
Love his utter anger when a clip doesn't show what he wants
Good god, Les Dennis' impressions really were rubbish 🤣
They all just sound like Les Dennis saying words.
I also like Les Dennis, ever since Extras.
The Geldof one wasn't bad, until he started singing.
Yes exactly, although he does look a bit like Dirty Den when he pulls that face, I'll give him that.
To be fair Russ Abbott as always looked a decade older than he actually was.
The chance of him landing on Billy pierce doing a Scottish joke brilliant
"I've lost the part of mah brain that can te - that can - tha........" - Limmy, 2022
Man at 25 min is Billy Pearce famous in Bradford for always being in Christmas panto.

Thanks Rain Man
What does this mean?
I've still got the 'Atmosphere' single on vinyl 😂
This fact makes me want to crawl out of my body

"NPCs" I'd rather have made this show than use that term.
“So risky watching ANYTHING befo… 2020.”
What a none-playable character.
Mavis was a deliberate comic grotesque character created by the writers on Coro. So Les Dennis 'creates' a comic character from a...comic character. He's either lacking even a crumb of imagination or he's thoroughly unable to read creative intent.
I think both.
'WOTDAFUCKISDIS!?' his constantly increasing anger is making me spew my tea.

The cigarette is already lit so he doesn’t have to take the packet out incase anyone asks for one.
Apparently Russ Abbot is a bit pissed as his shows no longer air. i wonder why Russ.
Dustin Gee was dead not too long after this episode aired, in January 86.
How can Russ Abbot look 50 when he’s 37? 😂
Its so he dont have to crash a cig when he pulls cigs out.
Those Les Dennis impersonations are just awful.
12:08 I thought either Russ Abbot or Les Dennis had entered his Twitch chat 🤣
40:45 that didny rhyme and he looks like he's having a stroke
Russ Abbott top casual in his Best Company, he kept his terrace escapades on the down low 😂
The whale fishing joke was a Mike Reid bit, they basically tried turning his one liner into a sketch.

I want to see him do Bob Monkhouses comedy connections.
Fuckin golden. If you ever hear Limmy tell anyone they really like my work, just fuckin kill me.
Some f this is a total nightmare dear God fascinating watching like a social experiment wow
Not fuckin wrong about Abbot. It was like watching someone puke their curry up, but it was the only guy in a kilt doing it. Really was the only representation. Unfuckinbelievable
Is the cigarette joke meaning he is so tight doesn’t want anyone asking for a light?
If he got the packet out he would feel obliged to offer them around - I think.
LITTLE AND LARGE FFS
I think this is what gave me my childhood trauma
Cannon and Ball were my faves. Never got into the genius of Abbott. I was defo more rock on Tommy 😀
Limmy getting angry at a parody of a fictional conversation between two made up characters: JUST SHUT UP AND LET MAVIS SAY SOMETHING! 😂
25:00 Yes!
The catchphrase is "painting the town red", "painting the town" isn't a phrase, but bit does rhyme...
It’s Susie Blake, who was a Russ Abbot regular
She was really annoying in something...
I always thought that was Black Lace who did Atmosphere
from 23:33 Barbera from the League of Gentlemen

it's his only childhood hero who didn't turn out to be a massive nonce (yet).
He was funny in the Ricky Gervais thingy. I always found his Mavis impression really annoying. He wasn't very good at impressions. My theory is that the comedy couldn't be too hard hitting because we were still recovering from the trauma of the war.
Only representation you had on telly? What about Isla St. Clair?
Dustin Gee was a legend.
Name one good show that was on Prime time Saturday TV.
The late late breakfast show, although they didn't air the best one
Haha. That's a really good point.
Check oot Bugernation Street. Comedy gold.
27.30 why spend money for a padlock for bin if that tight 🤣
Matt Lucas used black face on BBC in 2010
I don’t remember that show. What other sketch shows were there? 2 Ronnies, Benny hill, Lenny Henry. Russ Abbott looked terrible.
Bobby Davro
Yeah good one. Freddie Star show.
it won't come back. It's ephemeral.
Fa minds on the "spook!....slither" guy?
limmy makes people in his generation look like theyre doing it wrong and i love it
Soap Rage
I reckon he lights them in his pockets so as not to waste any of it as he brings it to his mouth 🤔 I’m reaching but can’t think of anything else although now I’m writing this it makes no sense 😂
Spendthrift
Maybe it’s that his money is burning a hole in his pocket (cos he won’t spend it), so then when he pulls the cigarette out it also lights it?
Blonde blindness- it’s very common, all the blondes blend in to one
the british arkan
He's a long distance lorry driver, so hes going a bit further, it's part of the joke
layers to this one
For me Russ Abbott was way out in the periphery of what was funny as a kid. Barely registered.
Limmy, its no on the telly 'cause it's funny, you've tae think it's funny cause its oan the telly.
Cancelled
Middle age wedgie has been, desperately trying to be relevant to 18/25 years olds.
'Thanks for the subs' on his headstone.
Limmy please do some Barrymore
