      What is the situation with the products using a specific work frequency? My ISP sent out a new modem/router and I do not see where it shows two different frequencies. I tried to add my MyQ to my network, but it said I had to have the 2.4 freq. If/when I get the HOOBS, will I have to worry about the freq issue?

    My main source of entertainment are movies and tv so I recently bought a 60” lg because it works with HomeKit. But after I hooked up the tv I found out besides turning the tv off & screen mirroring there’s not much else it will do as far as HomeKit is concerned. Those are some great features but I want to utilize automations.
    I watched your video and I did some more digging on HOOBS. I found out if I add the HOOBS starter kit to my Home platform I’de add lots of HomeKit features to my LG tv. Not only will HOOBS effect my LG tv but like you stated I’ll be able to add some of other smart devices, I have in my smart home, that do not currently work on the HomeKit platform (like my Eufy c25 robovac).
    So July ask me about my LG tv & eufy robovac.
    Another quality video to help me build my smart home. Thanks 👍🏽

      Henrik Toubro thanks for watching! Glad to hear you are enjoying Homebridge! Which security cameras are you using with Homebridge? I’ve been patiently waiting for the IKEA blinds to release and work natively with homekit, but now I’m tempted to just set them up with Homebridge in the meantime.

    • @HToubro
      @HToubro 5 років тому

      Shane Whatley I’m using some old D-link cameras and a Hikvision, so getting them into Home is awesome. I am looking at the different possibilities now that Apple has released Secure Video, as homebridge cameras does not offer that, (at least not last time I checked).
      Regarding the blinds, I love these. Availability in Denmark is small, but I found two 140cm which I then took apart and changed the fabric on. I then got an IKEA gateway that I connected them to, (which is rather cumbersome compared to other brands such as Aqara) and ultimately I setup homebridge to control them. The other day I modified the accompanying remote so it’s built into the wall with my light switch and outlet 🙂 You’re welcome to hit me up if you have questions.

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  5 років тому

      Henrik Toubro that is awesome! I’ll be sure to remember that whenever I get some of those blinds. Thanks! And I’ve stayed away from HomeKit cameras myself just using a wired local dvr camera setup which works great. But like you, I may be considering HK secure video cameras as well. It’s an awesome feature and it could be nice to have some cameras working with my HK setup.

    I was in for the $129 price, but I think I will skip it at the $249 and that is a sale from $299. I only have one thing that is not HomeKit compliant yet and that is my Vivint home security system. IU downloaded home bridge and everything is working fine. I will buy a smaller box like a raspberry pi to run it on, but my Mac is on all the time. I do like the idea of the HOOBS box, but at that price if what I am doing is already working, then I will not mess with it. Thanks again and your channel is great.

    Looking back at this one year later, I did HOOBS’ “expert” approach, which is buying your own Raspberry Pi and downloading the software to mount onto it, and I’ll say this: it’s doable with no experience (I did it) but I would much rather have spent the money to get the all in one set up. But after some serious trial and error, it’s up and running fairly smoothly with Siri.

    Another good video.
    Glad to see that your channel is getting enough attention so as you’re getting items from manufacturers to ‘test’. That’s pretty cool. - Nobody ever sends me free stuff.
    Anyway. As I’ve stated in my comments on your other videos, I’ve made the decision to minimize the number of smart device manufacturers as possible in building my automated home...
    I don’t want the hassle of having to install/maintain multiple ‘bridge’ units - I just want ‘ease of install’ and minimal hardware. So. My system consists of a Lutron Caseta bridge, and my other devices either need to work with that (my Ecobee thermostat), or work without a bridge (my Insignia garage door opener).
    I’ve looked at the HomeBridge solution for integrating my (old) Night Owl Security Camera System into HomeKit - but have not found any way to make it happen.
    - Does the Hoobs system have capability to add older camera NVRs or add login credentials from a 3rd-party to pull streaming camera feeds into HomeKit?
    Is this scenario one that Hoobs tech support is savvy enough and/or will to assist with?
    * on a different note - I think it’s safe to assume that Ring Doorbells are (FINALLY) going to be directly accessible to HomeKit in the very near future, with Apple’s recent ‘cloud video’ change.
    So. I’d guess that all the folks who have been using HomeBridge only for Ring will be pleased.

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  5 років тому

      Thanks Brad! I can understand the desire to have as few bridge units as possible, although I do really like many of the bridge products for reliability reasons.
      HOOBS is just a more user friendly interface that simplifies the plugin installation and configuration of HomeBridge. So it is still HomeBridge, just with the HOOBS interface to make things a little easier. So if there are no HomeBridge plugins for a specific accessory, then it won't be possible with HOOBS. HOOBS tech support is very helpful, but I don't think they would be responsible for getting specific plugins to work (unless maybe it's one of those HOOBS certified plugins).

    Hi Shane, SOS. was too quick to buy the Hoobs but the more I watch video tutorials, the more I get confused😭Wondering if Sterling is a better option. I started out with smart/Tuya accessories but eventually bought a ton of Aqara devices as I wanted to transition to Homekit as I’m quite deep into apple ecosystem. I wonder if setting up this Hoobs is as easy for me who has not tried programming anything at all.

    • @ShaneCreates

      The sterling hub is only for connecting Google nest products to HomeKit. It won’t work for anything else. I hear it is easy to use but again, it won’t work for anything other than nest products.
      There is a slight learning curve for hoobs but they make it pretty easy, especially with some of the certified plugins. They also have a great support community over on Reddit and Facebook that may help when you run into problems.

    I’m not a coder so struggled to fix the coding when having different types of accessories running on the same bridge.

      aceraf158 adding sonoff devices were difficult, I tried a couple of different methods / plugins one was a sniffer that I ran on my computer and another controlled econtrol app, neither was acceptable. The best way to integrate is to flash with ravensystem then it will work natively in HomeKit - if you struggle, then you can use discord,or slack messengers or post to reddit or github for support.

      aceraf158 yeah, there is a Windows app - but it’s in Italian or Spanish .. Go take another look, the github page has changed recently to include some clearer instructions - I want to do some kind of site and channel in the new year to teach people - simple and clearly - not just some tech head mumbling jargon or demonstrating that he can do it (as you must have come across)

      It CMD doesn’t work the same on windows and we have to use .bin files rather than the flash.sh prompt.

    Hi Shane! Know this is an older video but I find your stuff SO helpful. Can you recommend a video that explains the differences between HomeKit, homebridge, and hooks? Decided to make the move from home assistant and am a little confused on getting started.

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  4 роки тому

      Thanks Carissa! I'm glad you find the videos helpful. I haven't made a video that really describes the difference, so I'll try to explain (at least as far as how I'm using it).
      HomeKit is the smart home platform of choice. I use the Apple Home app for accessing all of my HomeKit accessories and automations. When I buy a new product, I always look for that "works with HomeKit" stamp so I know I'll be able to add it to my setup.
      Sometimes you may have devices that don't "work with homekit." This is where Homebridge or Hoobs comes in.
      You can lump Homebridge and Hoobs into the same category. Essentially, they are used for the same thing, they just have different interfaces and different setup processes.
      Homebridge/Hoobs can acts as a "bridge" between your HomeKit platform and those other smart home devices that don't support homekit. With Homebridge/Hoobs you are able to add devices that don't natively support HomeKit to your HomeKit platform. Homebridge/Hoobs uses open source plugins developed by the HomeBridge community. Not only can you add non-homekit products to your homekit setup with these plugins, but you can also find plugins that can help you do more advanced stuff, such as creating virtual switches, timers, etc. Once configured in Homebridge/Hoobs, all this can be accessed from your HomeKit setup/the Apple Home app.
      Hope that helps!

      You are not able to control your accessories from the Home app when you leave? Are all homekit accessories giving you trouble or just those added through HOOBS? If it's all accessories, it may be an issue with your homekit hub.

      I haven't used the lutron plugin so I'm not exactly sure what it does. But if you are trying to use Lutron Caseta light switches, then I'd say no...you will still need the bridge. Lutron uses a proprietary wireless protocol to connect all of their accessories to the bridge, which should be necessary.

    Thanks for this great review.
    I am using HomeBridge for more than a year. I use it on a RPi3B+ with Config UI X installed.
    And have many different plug-ins installed for a plethora of devices.
    Hoobs seems to be a thin layer on top of HB. Just a few more extra UI functions.
    But what I really miss here is a way to circumvent the coding work when installing a plug-in.
    That is the cumbersome part for non experienced users.
    Think of typing in IP addresses, usernames, passwords, settings, etc.
    If they certify plug-ins it would be nice to implement a user friendly layer to setup a plug-in.
    Than we are talking about a great addition to HB.
    Hopefully they are working on that.
    HB is great and a very nice way to include non HimeKit compliant devices and software, but it is unreliable cause of updates of the product’s firmware, cloud server settings and so on.
    A great OpenSource layer to unify plug-ins would improve the usability and reliance. But that would require a huge amount of effort, guidance and control. Soon out of the realm of Open Source.
    That’s why Apple stepped in and made HomeKit
    I hope Hoobs will make part of that goal to unify a reality.

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  5 років тому

      Hey Mike, thanks for your input! The way HOOBS is approaching their certified plugins does seem to be very similar to the implementation you mention. Unfortunately, I did not have any of the devices to test out with the certified plugins. BUT, from my understanding, starting with version 3, there is an automatic / UI plugin configuration for all HOOBS certified plugins that writes the accessory json itself and only asks you for details like username and password (which it keeps hidden in the UI). This of course would make not only the plugin installation process very easy, but also configuring the plugin like you mentioned.

    • @HOOBS_Official

      HOOBS has automatic configuration for some plugins as well as visual UI configuration for all HOOBS certified plugins, with more on the way.

    doesn’t homekit already have some form of security baked into it? all homekit approved devices should have gone through rigorous security measures before they can officially be homekit approved right? (i may be under the wrong impression about this though). i think we should be fine as long as we don’t use third party services like for example video footage, if we use homekit secure video instead of the device’s storage service, we should be fine right? furthermore most modern routers or mesh systems should have firewalls, parental controls stuff that we can tinker with. i kinda feel like if we are careful in our setup, we are already kinda safe... no? this feels a little like an overkill?? i’m assuming a pure homekit setup here and randomised attacks. if someone is really trying hard to hack u... they’d prob get through anyway with all these consumer level security measures.

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  4 роки тому +1

      Yea, I agree with you. HomeKit is generally more secure than most and I agree regarding the homekit secure video. And yes I think some modern routers have parental control and firewall options but I'm not sure to what extent. I'm not sure if they are capable of monitoring all the IoT devices, or just devices capable of web browsing. They often require adding additional services that cost more money. For example, for me to get this kind of security through my router, I'd have to pay an additional $70/year. And I'd have to add Circle by Disney (included w router) to take advantage of parental controls. So it probably varies case by case but worth checking out to see what's available if it is something you are concerned about. And keep in mind, I know of many people who are still just using the built in modem/router combo they get from their network provider which likely doesn't have any of these features.
      I know many people have expressed concern about how much data these smart devices are sending back to wherever they came from. I like that I can see the network usage and even what ports are being used with each product. But yea, if you are already all homekit and conscious of all this stuff like you, you are probably more safe than most not thinking about it.

      @@ShaneCreates I was able to fix it, the new issue is connecting any of the Ring cameras since after installing successfully The Ring plug-in, non of them are showing on HomeKit to add them up. Anything I’m missing.
      Thanks in advance, love your content🤙

    Thanks for showcasing this, Shane. I'm using Homebridge on my Pi for my Roborock vacuum and my Xiaomi air purifier. I will now try and upgrade my manual installation to Hoobs as described under github.com/hoobs-org/HOOBS/wiki/2.4-Upgrading-Manually. I really want to use this nice and clean Hoobs interface.

      Awesome, thanks for watching! Good luck! I think you will really like using it for adding and configuring plugins, especially using their certified plugins in version 3.

      @@ShaneCreates It worked smoothly. Thanks. Only issue was that I couldn't find the plugins via Hoobs that I used before. I had to look them up individually and install them via Terminal.

      Interesting. On the beta version the Roborock is actually one of their certified plugins. And I've been able to find everything else through the search plugins feature. Glad everything is running smooth for you though!

    Does the google home plugin turn a google home into a HomePod? Can you control all of your homekit devices with the google home? Also, if so, do you say “hey google” or “hey Siri” to activate it? Do you know if there is a plugin to get a google home hub compatible as well?

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  5 років тому

      X X the plugin details here say you can control your supported hoobs accessories from any google home speaker or the google home mobile app. I don’t have one to test myself.

      You can expose all your accessories connected via HOOBS to be controlled using your Google Home. Natively integrated accessories directly via HomeKit must also be integrated via HOOBS for this to work.

    Was interested but not anymore. Even though this video is 3 months old doesn’t make sense why the starter box jumped up an extra $70. No longer $100, no longer $130, it’s $200. The free download is no longer free, it’s a $7 donation. The damn SD card is now $20.
    I think you should rethink recommending this to your subscribers.

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  4 роки тому

      Yea, I agree the price increase sucks. But I'd still recommend the product if one is willing to pay for it. You are really paying for convenience with the hoobs in a box. Anyone can still achieve the same outcome for free if you are willing to put in the time and work to setup your own raspberry pi. The download is still free, btw. The $7 donation is just a suggestion and not necessary if you don't want to pay it.
