The original street until about the 1930's had much wider sidewalks. Car parking in NYC wasn't really a thing until about the 1930's, when most of the streets were turned into 1-way streets and the streets were widened in order to park cars. NYC sidewalks used to be shockingly wide, at least to our modern eyes.
Wait…These streets used to be two way???? I’m a 95’ baby so please enlighten me! the only other roads I’ve seen that were before my time were Dumbo parks cobblestone roads
@@ColdHrtsMotoVlogs I don't think you would want to live in that era despite there being no vehicle wrecks; horse poop was really bad and would rival Chicago snow banks. A big impetus to replacing horses with cars in NYC was less poop.
For instance, zebra stripes for pedestrians are shaped the way they are because they used to be raised blocks of stone; you would cross the street without having to put your feet in poop.
On the other hand, we have gone too far in allowing far too many cars into NYC. NYC has realized this and is trying to exclude private automobiles via congestion pricing.
OHHHHHH I HONESTLY FORGOT HORSES WAS THE TRANSPORTATION METHOD even for regular working class. Imagine having to clean all that poop! I’d rather the smell of 93 octane over 93 horses
@@ColdHrtsMotoVlogs I believe Chicago in 1903 was the first metropolis to record more births than deaths; previously all cities had a higher death rate than birth rate, and thus needed a constant influx of outsiders to keep their population from dropping. London also experienced a tremendous drop in deaths once they completed their new sewage system circa 1875 but still had more deaths than births.
The mechanism by which people died is from cholera ie poop contaminates the drinking water, but Chicago's canal/river which was built in 1899 washed all that poop away, thus allowing Chicago to be the first city ever to record more births than deaths.
Getting horses out of cities, and constant flowing water through cities, then became the major societal goal of early 20th cities. You really shouldn't have horses in cities.
