Damn, you are so right. Here, I've been a fan since the 70s, and we are one of those lull years where NASCAR media is at a low point. They better rebound quickly. We are in the era where people lose interest, pretty fast.
If you look at sportscar series like IMSA and the World Endurance Championship (WEC), there's no standardized engine rules. OEMS can build whatever engine they want in addition to a hybrid component. Right now, both series are going through a golden age with endless manufacturers entering. OEMS look at NASCAR and think the standardized V8 engines don't suit their business plans and are needlessly expensive. NASCAR is going to have to embrace loosening up rules if the automotive industry remains unsure for many years
Especially since guys like Toyota have actually dumped the v8 from their trucks, like the tundra, etc. this makes a V8 not relevant to their brand anymore. With that said, may as well bring some imsa cars of different classes, and try them on some ovals.
Eric you definitely called it on McDowell. I don’t blame him one bit. You would think they’d offer him a multi-year contract since he’s brought a lot of success to that team. I just hope he’s not taking 2 steps back. I just don’t have a lot of confidence in Spire becoming very competitive. McDowell just now started getting really good result’s in the last 3 yrs or so.
Yeah, and FRM not doing multi year contracts is going to be why they will never be competitors. No one is going to want to spend their entire career negotiating to continue to race there, so they will move on as soon as they can
@@mattcecil6692 true Carson seems to get decent finishes. Last year was impressive driving spire equipment. I’m really glad McDowell has a multi year contract. He definitely deserves it and definitely paid his dues.
One interesting thing Elton said was specifically saying pushrod V8. Basically no production cars use pushrods anymore so I’m hopeful maybe this could mean manufacturers are ok with making SOHC or DOHC V8s. Maybe a boomer take but I’d really hate to see nascar move away from V8s
Hey Eric! Different manufacturers with different power? Don’t let that scare you. That’s what it used to be! That is what made NASCAR great! You are part of today’s audience that looks at racing like life. Sameness, equality, blah blah blah. Mandatory data sharing? Crazy! This is racing. That’s how brand identification drove NASCAR popularity for decades. When they started to eliminate brand identity is when they tried to replace that with “superstars”. Embrace difference!
I only hope NASCAR doesn't get too hungry for a new OEM and lets them walk all over. The idea of several demanding a hybrid format change to commit is a major undertaking/investment We just got the Next Gen, had to do a fix that NASCAR paid for due to the concussions of 2022, have negotiations going for broadcasting, and now there's a call for hybrid only half way through the 3rd season of this car. I could understand a dedicated series, they've been toying with that idea for years now, but another major overhaul on that car while costs are the primary issue for teams...I just don't see how that's sustainable
I'm pretty sure that when NASCAR built the Next Gen car, they were keeping in mind the possibility of new manufactures. I think this car can transition into a hybrid a lot easier than previous generations, so costs might not be nearly as high since it was built with any future technological changes in mind.
@@elijahjp2158this is right. You don't see solid axles on hybrids or EVs. The independent rear was a necessity. If they bring hybrids in, I hope it's a few R&D cars like they did with Le Man's. Or make them their own class, like formula E.
Hearing Elton Sawyer say that adding horsepower "costs too much money" and when Dale Jr asks him why and say "it just is." That's not a good reason. That's a sign that he's making excuses and the reason is they just won't.
0:28 They would have to dyno all engines from each manufacturer and get the hp, tq and maybe even the powerband to truly equalize them and then lock and seal the ECM's which is doable.
NASCAR needs to focus on right now and making the current product the best it can be rather than trying to predict what another OEM might want. Put eyes on the sport and OEMs will want to be a part of it to put those eyes on their brand. It's that simple.
Could go back quite a few episodes back where it comes to Logano where I said my thoughts and say again: The 22 team has been a struggle even in their championship season. He was able to place as he did because other teams were inconsistent in the season. But as 2023 and now showed, that inconsistency is the thing that is constant while all the other major players have shown up race after race. I maintain my statement that Joey's season is done. Even if he wins, that inconsistency is NOT going to put him past round 12 or surely 8. If he wins and not "just" by strategy, he will have to do a LOT to be relevant for playoffs... and I just don't see that happening.
I think manufacturer is being allowed to run different engine packages would be a pretty cool idea. Watch Honda show up with a twin turbo V6 going up against Camaro V8. But I think something else that would also help is if the manufacturers had more control of the bodies. Even though the manufacturers have more control over certain parts, like the nose, I feel like the roof line and some other parts are still too generic.
I know I'm a old head, but can anyone else confirm when the Busch series ran V6 and V8 engines? I believe it was some time in the early 80's or late 70's. The weight requirement for the V6s were lower due to the lack of power and to try to even the plane of racing. Remember oval racing is a race of momentum! You don't necessarily have to have the most powerful car. That's how Junior Johnson found drafting back when they race convertible cars! I believe in IMSA Racing with multiple manufacturers, there again were weight penalties for turbo and non turbo cars, 6 cylinder cars versus V8 engines.🤔 So anything is possible for the future of Nascar. Sorry to say but the traditional push rod V8 is going to phased out in the future. 😪
I pretty much get all my Nascar news from you, Eric. Thanks for doing such a great job. I haven't been up to date with all the storylines like this in years.
Mcdowell moving in Football terms is like a “rebuild”, Spire is building a powerhouse (expecting) team in the Chevy territory. Also, in Soccer analogy i can explain this move like the PSG in the European Soccer, injecting money in the team, but they need a “leadership”, and Mcdowell is expected to be that “leadership”.
I would be curious to see how the Ford engines compare to Chevy and Toyota with torque. Peak horsepower may be close, but it always seems like Fords are always down on usable power.
Sounds to me that any new OEMs don't want a thousand HP, so NASCAR is agreeing with them to make them happy. None of the rumored additional OEMs sell pushrod V8s (Toyota copied a Chevy engine) so NASCAR is doing what they can to make it easier for "newbies".
Another option since Nascar uses a transaxle now would be to switching to IMSA engines which would automatically open the door to several new OEM's and the Chevrolets could run the Cadillac engine. Indycar has been discussing this recently about redesigning the whole car or engine bay to accept all IMSA engines for that very reason.
The frustrating thing is Logano should have won Richmond since Hamlin should have been DQed but I digress. Penske just doesn’t have speed outside of Blaney occasionally. I know if Logano was in a Hendrick or Gibbs/23XI car he would be a championship contender. Idk why Penske and Ford are so far behind rn…
Nascrap ARRANGED IT THIS WAY - NO ONE CAN COMPETE EXCEPT SHITBOYS!!!! CORRUPT P.O.S. NASCRAP IS .............. NASCAR CONTROLS EVERYTHING!!!! ULTIMATE TRUTH!!!!
In V8 Supercar the GMs have 5.7L push rod engines while the Ford have 5.4L overhead cams, and both platforms are pretty equal. It is sure possible and would love to see Nascar going in this direction. Like "as long as it's a V8 in this power range"
Love your Nascar podcasts eric! I'm curious to see how McDowell gonna do in the 71 Chevy next year I can see why he wanted a multi year contract and not year to year
NASCAR could allow 4-valve OHC V8's run on an equivalence formula with the pushrod 2-valve engines, but supercharging or turbocharging should not be allowed. The OHC engines should have 18% smaller bore and max displacement of 4.8 liters.
Getting deeper into the numbers, NASCAR could set a maximum bore size of 3.847" and stroke of 3.25", for 302 cubic inches displacement (5.0 liters). They would have to run 10300 rpm to get back to the same power potential that the 2-valve pushrod engines have. And no flat cranks to keep them from sounding like buzzy 4-cylinders. I can see Honda, Nissan, Mercedes, and BMW being interested in building an engine like that.
I love the idea of manufacturers developing their own styles of powerplants. I disagree that it's a variable that we wouldn't see. A car's unique powerplant is a huge talking point in the auto industry. Even when buying a car, especially a performance car, odds are the seller is going to point out the drivetrain to the potential buyer. And what better way to convince consumers to buy their product than by putting it on full display in competition? This would be awesome to see.
Ford benefits from the current points system in nascar. They could afford to use 2/3rds of the season just for development, get a win right before the playoffs start, and turn it on when it counts to win the title. Team Penske is no stranger to this as that’s basically what they’ve done the last 2 years. Even in 2018 with the new Camaro we saw this. No wins for 5 months, then Elliott wins at Watkins Glen, and wins 2 races in the playoffs and nearly makes the final 4.
That year shitrolling crapmaro won only 3 races - then nascrap immediately stepped in with a " meeting" with all shitcar teams and gave them "something extra" then the last 11 races shitcars won 6 and the driver chumpship arranged for Ellishit boy!!!!! Nascrap is extremely quick to rescue shitcars but will let/keep FORD AT THE BOTTOM FOR F'N DECADES+
1.) Make all the cars slower and run the same speed 2.) Complain that they can't pass because too many restrictions making them all run the same speed. 850 hp is easy today and not cost prohibitive. Do it
I have 9 Logano picks left in Fantasy! By now I would have used at least 5, especially plate races. It’s so bizarre to see the Fords struggle so bad. New car hangover.
I don't have all the stats on Ford overall from this season to last. It may be that 2024 in Cup is worse than last year, but the performance has looked remarkably similar. Logano won Atlanta last year, but that's a wild card now with the super speedway rules. Ford didn't win again until the 600. We've now seen Buescher come extremely close to winning and he stayed up front a while. Prior to Kansas, I compared the first 11 races for Logano from 2023 and 2024. If I didn't make any errors, despite his win last year, he was actually just slightly better this season compared to 2023. That Atlanta win took some pressure off, but he's been running about the same. Regarding rules changes and new OEMs, I like NASCAR being flexible on things. For example, on scheduling, I like when they shuffle things around and I'm far from a traditionalist. I'm okay with the idea of new engine types as long as the competition is maintained, even though I prefer the classic pushrod V8s. I just don't want to see changes that reduce competition or make the racing worse, to me. One thing I don't want to see is a push-to-pass system. There are those who seem to want it, and I don't think it's going to have a positive effect on the racing product, and that's not factoring in the recent scandal with it. I've never liked the idea of it unless it was a video game like Super Off Road or Danny Sullivan's Indy Heat.
With McDowell at Spire next year I could see them and FRM on par with each other next year. Especially since McDowell will bring a lot knowledge in on how to make the cars faster at like road courses and superspeeedways as as at flat ovals.
6:57 Then they need to go to an overhead cam engine which is cheaper to get more HP out of anyways than the old pushrod engines if getting a new OEM is what nascar really wants.
The only difference between ford this year and Chevy in 2018 was .. the Chevy pipeline was kinda in a rebuild .. chase didn’t win his first race til Watkins glen .. Kyle Larson only won his first race I believe that year too .. Jeff and Jimmie were passed there prime .. harvick switched to ford by then … ford still has some veteran heavy hitters .. while I agree it is similar I think with all the veterans in there prime for ford it’s a little bit more scary for them
Completely get McDowells move. This year has been tough so far for FRW. Great speed at times but wrecks, etc...are robbing them of the finishes. Hopefully they can finish strong. Michael will definitely help Spire move forward.
I think this scenario of power plants would be kind of cool. Like you said, we want to see it on the track. I want to see passing, I don’t watch NASCAR and say, I want to buy a Camaro or Camry.
I still believe leadership at Ford is lacking! Who ever developed the new Dark Horse Mustang front end needs to go back ti school! And what's up with RoushYate horsepower??! I'm a Ford guy and I'm dying here!
I think it would be more accurate to say that McDowell turned FRM into a team that can compete with the big teams, because before him, it certainly wasn’t that.
If it makes the same power and fuel economy, I have zero issues with different engine types in nascar, and I’m sure that’s how it would be if this was happen. I’m cool with it, dual cam v8’s sound pretty cool too 🤷♂️
I stated my point. NASCAR wants to keep spending under control? Well, hybrid cars will cost a lot more. And especially on the team side. New engineers will be needed. New infrastructure. New type of training. Reconfiguration of simulators. New tyres. It's already a "rich man sport". But it will get worse... way worse
Have you seen the “random nascar” on display? Then Pontiac puts a full page ad in car a driver!!! I believe that will be your Chevy Replacement! If you look at the car that was on display it kinda looks like a Pontiac plus the ad says “you can’t buy a dodge charger with splitter guard, our entire front end is a splitter guard” hmmm is there truth behind this?
I think Michael McDowell move to Spire is a good move. I wonder when Spire contract with Chevy is up. Ford i think is going to run better in the second half of the season. I wonder if Darlington will get Ford's first win - would be funny if all 3 series were won by Fords. Now, Race Hub on Fox is fine, however, cable is not what it was. Streaming is big now..I mean, ANYBODY can start a show, right Eric..🤓
Thoughts: Nascar BOP. A BOP similar to DTM's BOP. The winner gets a weight penalty. Or a BOP track by track like IMSA/WEC. There are 3 different manufactures why not BOP each engine manufacture differently?
Different power plants under the hood would be wonderful. V8 push rod engines are the past. Fuel consumption would be the biggest hurdle with different engines. You could have one run whole stages without stopping
nothing done for the templates nascar sets for all the manufacturers, nascar wants ford out to make room for the Hondas, great move for any Ford driver to look for a Chevy or Toyota team going forward sponsors of the Ford teams will be leaving faster then the Ford nascar fans.
Innovation is what draws in new manufactures. Try it on the track today sell it in the consumer vehicle tomorrow. NASCAR hasn’t really done any innovating in 40 years so no wonder we get stuck with the same manufacturers and can’t attract new ones. NASCAR seems more open to trying new things lately and other manufacturers are keeping on eye on it.
Ford is AWFUL, and that has clearly affected Penske (except for Blaney) Glad Cindric has more raw speed this year tho. Hope he and Logano can start having more speed so they can make a push towards the playoffs, but with Ford, I doubt that.
4:58 Ehhh I don’t know, of course Joey couldn’t be a “toxic positivity”, but if we remember Joe Gibbs struggle the first half of the 2017 season with the 2018 Camry, i think the first win in Gibbs 2018 Camry, came with Denny Hamlin in New Hampshire, and Kyle Busch fumbles a lot of wins because of strategy and driver errors or some perfect storm. Hendrick in 2018 struggles a lot with the Camaro ZL1, and they first win came with Chase Elliott at the Glen. So is “normal” to have the downgrade with the new car, soon the Dark Horse will see his first win. Joey and the others will find the way to the Victory Lane.
Y’all love hating Joey 🤦♂️ he has the ability to be one of the best on the track no matter what car he’s in. Also, McDowell is chalked 💀 dude wins an average of .1 races per season😂
@mgm1356 the hell do you think I am? An F1 fan? Hell I even support denny (granted he is being kind of a villain this season) he's not been near the asshole Joey has been
It's a continuous cycle with new cars....I am not worried, most manufacturers will figure it out at some point. Especially those with deep pockets. So meh, new year...new winners

That Imsa thing would be pretty interesting but that's about it right now
With McDowell at Spire next year I could see them and FRM on par with each other next year. Especially since McDowell will bring a lot knowledge in on how to make the cars faster at like road courses and superspeeedways as as at flat ovals.
NASCAR has to make some adjustments for Ford in order for them to be more competitive . The big money teams are the only ones who are winning .
Joey hitting a panic button?! That's crazy!!!
6:57 Then they need to go to an overhead cam engine which is cheaper to get more HP out of anyways than the old pushrod engines if getting a new OEM is what nascar really wants.
Ford with new body reminds me of Chevy new body from 2018 Chevy struggle midway
Other then the Daytona 500 win Chevrolet went winless til Watkins Glen that year.
Terrible new body... Those elevated fenders may be causing problems with air...
The only difference between ford this year and Chevy in 2018 was .. the Chevy pipeline was kinda in a rebuild .. chase didn’t win his first race til Watkins glen .. Kyle Larson only won his first race I believe that year too .. Jeff and Jimmie were passed there prime .. harvick switched to ford by then … ford still has some veteran heavy hitters .. while I agree it is similar I think with all the veterans in there prime for ford it’s a little bit more scary for them
This is our race hub!! Great job Eric!
My boy Eric got the HTown hat! Better wear that when they win the Super Bowl.
"Parity" only two teams/makes winning..
Completely get McDowells move. This year has been tough so far for FRW. Great speed at times but wrecks, etc...are robbing them of the finishes. Hopefully they can finish strong. Michael will definitely help Spire move forward.
I believe in
“Run what you brung “!!!
Exactly!!!! I'm in misery right now... Ford needs to fix those Mustangs... Get rid of the elevated fenders... Do something!!
Some kid made it in Minecraft
McDowell definitely proved that FRM is up there with the big teams hope to see him improve in spire
I’m cool with it, dual cam v8’s sound pretty cool too 🤷♂️
Great info.
“Joey Logano is hitting the panic button”
All the news I needed to hear.
WHERE ARE MY FANASTY LINEUP SUGGESTIONS
The pushrod engine is just so damn awesome. But DOHC is just better under 1000hp.
This is a step down for front row and a step up for spire!! McDowell is proven to be a super speedway and road course ace and who don't want that ?
Wish you would do some videos with Dale jr Eric ❤ !
I stated my point. NASCAR wants to keep spending under control? Well, hybrid cars will cost a lot more. And especially on the team side. New engineers will be needed. New infrastructure. New type of training. Reconfiguration of simulators. New tyres.
It's already a "rich man sport". But it will get worse... way worse
@@johnhaas2523 which part? No new equipment? No new electric engineers? Will not cost more?
@@karendarrenmclarenJohn is a uneducated 🤡 btw
Good job
To me, it would be funny if Brad won this coming Darlington race since his car's throwback is to a Toyota.
I would think most manufacturers don't want to play in generic bumper cars pinned down like a prison camp.
WoW!! NASCAR is thinking about actually racing STOCK cars?? What an idea!!! Of course, they would have to change their name. /s
Yeah so many gen7 cars on the streets these days.. 😂
nothing done for the templates nascar sets for all the manufacturers, nascar wants ford out to make room for the Hondas, great move for any Ford driver to look for a Chevy or Toyota team going forward sponsors of the Ford teams will be leaving faster then the Ford nascar fans.
Ford was still butthurt over Talladega showing why McDowell is going to Chevrolet next year
Honestly, after Talladega I posted McDowell was on his way to Xfinity... 😂
If hybrids become an option, then let's go 1000 hp
How is Toyota and or Honda even in NASCAR? They don't build a V-8 in any vehicle that they build.
Exactly!! thank you!!..
Toyota still makes V8s for their trucks and certain Lexus models
Toyota ended v8’s in 2022. Trucks and Lexus.
@@Schneids71 you can still get a V8 in a Lexus, look it up
Who do you think are the two that shr would keep if they do sell two charters?
I think they keep gragson and briscoe
Speed costs money..and wrecks costs money. Ask the king about what he says to his drivers..." Don't wreck the car!"✔️
If Ford goes all the way into Michigan with a goose egg for wins there should be heads rolling for sure
Ford is AWFUL, and that has clearly affected Penske (except for Blaney)
Glad Cindric has more raw speed this year tho. Hope he and Logano can start having more speed so they can make a push towards the playoffs, but with Ford, I doubt that.
Ford Suffered with the new car
Joey and the others will find the way to the Victory Lane.
hi I love ur vids
This Sport is on a Steady Downhill slide and picking up speed ! COMING SOON NASCAR OUT OF BUISNESS !!
Y’all love hating Joey 🤦♂️ he has the ability to be one of the best on the track no matter what car he’s in. Also, McDowell is chalked 💀 dude wins an average of .1 races per season😂
We hate joey cause he's an asshole
@@Giant356NO, you hate Joey because he's the best, and beating your guy much too often... Just like Denny!!
If Joey Logano has the ability to be the best on the track no matter what car he's in, why is he doing so bad this year? Lol
@mgm1356 the hell do you think I am? An F1 fan?
Hell I even support denny (granted he is being kind of a villain this season) he's not been near the asshole Joey has been
@@Atari2600Gamerbecause you can't drive a slow car fast - Kevin Harvick's words, not mine!
No I didn't misspell..I said Elton. Mr Estep you need to speak more in depth about the consequences of NASCAR looking to go away from it's V8
Yupp
It's a continuous cycle with new cars....I am not worried, most manufacturers will figure it out at some point. Especially those with deep pockets. So meh, new year...new winners
But what is Chevy going to run what with the Malibu being cut at the end of '24?
Nascar used to care about parity now they don't step in at all.
I don’t understand why they just don’t up the horse power
