- Before joining the 7th Ranger Regiment, soldiers must pass the Ranger Assessment and Selection Program, or RASP. The RASP is an 8-week training that creates special operations soldiers who specialize in strike force raids and intelligence gathering.
In this video, some fellow Marines and I attempt the preliminary fitness test to get into the RASP.

0:00 - Intro
1:58 - Pushups
3:35 - Situps
4:35 - 2-mile run

Guy in blue did 0 pushups, just saying, they wouldnt fly at rasp
Thank you was boutta say that sht if i didnt see this comment yet
I paused the video the second I saw those push-ups dude. They only count about half of your push-ups at rasp because they have to be perfect form lmao (maybe not perfect but close enough to a perfect form)
Im going to guess only one of them is a grunt, and it ain’t the guy in the blue tee 😶
What you will here from cadre for any Ranger physical tests; one,one one one,you better do it correctly I can sit here all day ,one.
Full on respect for having a go at pjft Royal marines test. Royal marines UK no other unit like them, THE BEST
Y’all were absolute studs. y’all did great for the rasp fitness test I don’t think I could do as well as y’all did on the pull ups section of the test.
My son just classed up from pre rasp. He is now in the first phase of Rasp 1. No phone contact with him now for the first 4 weeks of RASP 1, however during pre rasp he was able to call us at will during down time. the horror stories he told of the physical fitness exercises blew my mind.
It’s rough from what I hear.
Impressive 😮
Impressive
I like the shirt with the Norwegian flag! I am both Norwegian and American!
u should try the Air Force special warfare initial fitness test. it consist of pull-ups, situp, pushup, 1.5 mile run , 2 x 25 meter underwater swim and 500 meter swim.
I started researching that one a while back. Might try it
Bro respect to you and your Marines, but there are nuances that they are strict AF on. The sit-ups, I love that the Corps makes you sit on their feet to accomplish them it makes the most sense. The Army never lets you, you will do roughly 10 less if the your partner is not as heavy as you.
Marines tend to crush the pull-up portion which is 6 rep minimum. But anything less than 10 is NOT okay after RASP.
Push-ups 56 is Army minimum but that will get you booted from anything related to the word Ranger. Most Marines also do push up where they tuck their elbows real tight and only move above their waist. Those don’t fly. Not even in airborne school. I seen a Marine Gunny do 46 pushups at airborne school and he was furious. Cool dude who aced everything else but when they altered his push-up form he lost double digit reps off his pushups.
Sub-40 5-mile is pass/fail minimum.
In the Marine Corps our standard for pushups is full body straight and moving with each rep. Upper arms have to be parallel to the ground at the bottom and elbows locked out at the top.
@@NickVarn I believe you but what we saw a lot of from the ANGLICO dudes at Airborne school was the kind of pushups this guy was doing.
ua-cam.com/video/TyE8YHZ2u6o/v-deo.htmlsi=CEJrfFyEuwmoSqo9
currently in pre rasp and none of those push-ups would’ve counted, along with the high physicality you also have to deal with some of the strictest cadre i’ve ever experienced
What was wrong with the pushups
@@NickVarnthey also do hand release pushups now but those looked good to me
2:27 middle and right man not coming all the way up. 2:37 better angle on man on right failing to go down to parallel and not coming all the way up. 2:54 RASP instructors would not count yours at this point due to not fully extending. Good on resting in pushup position as RASP cadre are notorious for failing individuals for resting at times they don’t like. Don’t know why most who do these tests never bust out the standards for form on these tests. It’s just a google search away, or call any of the RASP recruiter numbers and I’m sure they’d find a way to proctor a test for your channel.
@@jaredsmith4110 it’s not that I didn’t research the standards. In fact I briefed them in the video. I lock out on all of my push ups.
Some people start slacking when they get fatigued. I’m sure you saw that as RASP as well.
Far left had perfect form. Other two didn’t do a single one
I know this video was from a year ago, but now the requirement is pull-ups, push-ups, and a 5 mile run
I should have tried out for more shit while I was in. I would have been able to do this easily back in the day.
Certainly
Those are the minimums, however it’s all based off a point system
Bottom line is if your not maxing everything you won’t class up from Pre Rasp to Rasp because it’s so competitive
*And the push-ups, pull-ups and sit ups need to count
Very strict
You can’t use a “Pussy Strap” (kidney strap) too on the rucks
It’s meant to be hard
Why wouldn’t they let you use a part of the gear?
@@NickVarnIt’s SOP. They make you tuck it away. The mentality is different, from their perspective they try to take away any advantage you have. Because they wana know when shit hits the fan that you know you don’t need that and if you do need that advantage in order for you to succeed than your not the guy. It’s a war like mentality. The mentality for most scenarios is how does this help you in war.
They would say “your not gna have a strap if your buddies shot and your carrying him” therefore you don’t need it.
That’s Ranger mentality in a nutshell. It’s a good thing
@@NickVarnit’s not that bad without it. I like it more, especially if your running the whole time. At RASP Rucksacks are about 55-65lbs roughly depending on water or food. I agree though, if you can’t ruck without it then you shouldn’t be there. It’s nothing but majority studs who don’t give a fuck about their well being lol
@@LasVegasSlabs yeah that sounds like a recipe for injuries.
I will disagree with one point. Always have the weights center of gravity nearest your core and waist. As you progress (at least as a Marine 03-) and go from the 35# to 120#+ you will develop greater balance and strength. Having the majority of the weight high makes you prone to falls during actual movements.
You have to do T pushups
Your chest must touch the ground; other than that, perfect pushup from all the Marines. The Army and Marines seem to do the pushups the same way.
Have you been to Setermoen Nick? 🙂
Yes!
Where'd you get the backpack? I want one like that for training
It’s our issued main pack. I’m not sure what brand it is
@@NickVarn Ohh okay heard! Guess I'll have to wait until I get in. Thank you!
@@elliotv5354get a ALICE pack, they are in abundance at any military surplus store or online
@@boricua1151 These look badass. Thanks for the recommendation, bro!
@@elliotv5354 no problem brother, im not a fan of our issued pack so i used an alice pack(which is what you use at selection) to get ready for selection
Those standards are the minimum!! Most of the candidates are way above average!! Your peers that graduate won’t give you a good score if your running a 14:29 two mile run and they are hitting 11:00 minute averages these applies to all aspects of training and patrol evaluations!
Thanks.
do you know what the max is? i’m 14 years old and gonna start training soon.
dawg, 11:00 is not the average time for RASP candidates 😂😂. It's def way more like 13:00. If you're thinner then you better be faster than that, and if you're slower you better be strong
@@doc.l 1991 our unit set a high bar for who would get to go. This was where Soldiers were performing in the early 1990s. Different times.
Back then it was RIP.
Try the Rpat
Wouldn’t could one push up of the guy on the right…..sorry:)
Lake o’Neil rah
Yo how can this guy be a marine and run 16 min 2 mile? That's just bad, especially cause he's not even fat
This guy is just not a good distance runner. Plus I was in terrible cardio shape at the time of recording. Much better now.
@@NickVarnyou did good bro. Guy who commented probably a fatass
those push ups hurt my soul
Why?
Wow is that all 😂
That's just the pre-test to get in.
It's tougher during rasp.
Thats just the fitness test, when you actually make it past that you're going to be living hell on earth for a bit
Easy AF ruck lol ...
Yeah it wasn’t too bad.
This pushups were all wrong. You have to go down and t your arms out then go back up. The guy on the right did not do one single pushup even correct.
@@jaydubya7012
Agreed.
Good job marines, now do it in boots and utilities
