Hey All! Another Saturday, another studio session :)…explore a fun twist on one of my favorite beginner gelli printing techniques....The Mark Rothko Print! Today I do this fun 2 or 3 color blocking technique with iridescent paints on black steak paper 😍 Enjoy!

The Yale University Art Museum (which is free, by the way) has some Mark Rothko. I liked his stuff okay but I didn’t really “get” what all the hype was about. Then I saw it in person and was mesmerized. The subtle layering of color and the brush strokes are amazing. They just don’t translate or come across in photos. And the great thing about that Museum is the paintings are not behind glass and as long as you don’t touch you can get as close as you like to observe the brush work. They also have some Van Gogh. I highly recommend going there if you’re in the area.

I love the black steak paper and I love having lots of it, so it doesn't feel like a precious resource. Your prints are gorgeous!

Perhaps crumpling first, then printing would leave interesting crackle lines in black.

The steak paper is a little pricey, so I ordered a roll of black butcher paper for much less. I can cut sheets ! Love your Mark Rothko style! I have those Arteza paints too! Can't wait! Thank you Robyn! 🥰
You can buy black steak paper by the roll from a couple of different sights for a lot less…. Even though you’d have to cut your own sheest
Thx Trina...I haven't tried all of the different forms of it...I know there have been those I've tried that don't work the same as what I'm using in this video, however you know me I'm never opposed to trying different supplies. Can you send me a link to what you're talking about and I'll give it a a try! 💗
Just yesterday I was using Lumiere paint on the Gelli plate. On plain white paper is looked gorgeous! Now I want to see what it’s like on black paper! It’s more opaque than the Artezsa.
