Thank you for including the representative audio sample my fine internet friend! VERY helpful. Looking forward to your reviews in 2025! Frohes Neues Jahr!
Ben Webster moved to Europe and lived there until the end of his life. Interesting fact is he appeared as a sax player in a low-rent cabaret club in the 1970 Danish blue film titled Quiet Days in Clichy. He died in Amsterdam 1973 and is buried in Copenhagen.
Thanks, Michael for this very inspiring new format that you have online. I love the idea to get the sound samples and to get more into your point of view of music. Fantastic!
Hi Michael, gotta love Jimmy Smith and for me "The Cat" is one of his finest albums. Now I must look into "Root Down", you’ve got me intrigued. 😉 Webster’s usual smooth sax is exactly what you’d expect in "See You At The Fair", a great must-have album. Thanks for showcasing these fine recordings, best wishes and greetings, George 👍
Root Down along with The Cat is must own Smith LP, especially the new AS edition! Back at the Chicken Shack and Prayer Meetin complete his best 4 LPs. All in print in high quality editions!!
Die The Cat klingt unheimlich gut.Wow.

I'm surprised you don't know more about Ben Webster. He is one of the three classic tenors along with Coleman Hawkins, his major influence, and Lester Young. I familiarized myself with Webster's work by checking out the box sets from the Time Life Giants of Jazz series from my local Carnegie library when I lived in a small midwestern town in the US back in the mid-1980s. One was devoted to each of these classic tenor players as well as many other classic players of various instruments. I have since bought the entire series on vinyl. Of course, Analogue Productions has put out a number of Ben Webster records over the years. The most crucial in my view are his collaborations with Coleman Hawkins ("Coleman Hawkins Meets Ben Webster"), another tenor standout named Don Byas, who was born four years after Webster (that one is on MPS and was released in 1968. You should definitely try to get a copy if you can), and Joe Zawinul, the keyboard player who went on to form Weather Report ("Soulmates"). There are many others that are also great. ORG has released quite a few, including a collaboration with Gerry Mulligan. Webster spent the last decade of his life primarily in Holland and worked with a quartet there that had another American expat, Kenny Drew, on piano. A number of live recordings have been released from that group. You have a lot of exploring to do!
I am super happy with my copies of Jimmy Smiths The Cat and Websters See You at the Fair. Two bonafide masters of their instruments and craft on tip top form in each case. The AS 33rpm series has been nothing short of superb. Youre getting 95% of the sound of the oft prior AP 45rpm editions for less money in significantly better packaging with less side flipping. Long may they continue!
Only reading the headline I thought for a second or two that you had discovered the new Webster LEWIS Live at Club7 Box set which is absolutely stunning.
Hey Michael. Great video! Love "The Cat" album. I have an OG. So groovy and funky. That reissue looks and sounds great. Love Jimmy Smith. Happy New Year! Cheers
Ben Webster is one of my favorite saxophonists along with Johnny Hodges and Lester Young, There is no way to go wrong with almost anything he produced. There is one collaboration with him and Oscar Peterson that I highly recommend. Give it a try and see. Great video... Cheers from Canada.
Mike there is one album in collaboration as well Art Tatum and Ben Webster" pending on the "Pablo" release Chad did at Analog Productions. That is a most to have. I am sure you will get it once it is available, I had the original and it was stolen (entire collection was stolen, now it has been rebuilt) but this one is absolutely fantastic. Once you get it I am sure you will do a review because the album is really REALLY good.
As a huge Fan of the Hammond B3, this was excitement with two Jimmy Smith Albums. My hero's at the B3 are Jimmy Smith, Jon Lord (Deep Purple) and Ken Hensley (Uriah Heep). If you love the sound of the B3 another great Artists are Brian Auger, Keith Emerson, Billy Preston and Dr. Lonnie Smith.❤
If what you sampled from 'Root Down' is representative of the album as a whole then it just may change my general reaction to Jimmy Smith. I've tried in the past to get into his stuff but it's always sounded to me like the incidental soundtrack music that hot young things would furiously frug away to in some mid-'60s youth exploitation television show or b-movie (during the club scene trope), whose square musical director thought that Blue Note latin boogaloo could be a suitable substitute for garage psychedelia...
I am disappointed by the Jimmy Smith Root Down release, like others on Discogs. Cover is way too dark and soundstage is not so good. In my opinion. Not saying I hold the truth. I am keeping my copy anyhow and show full respect to each & everyone. Happy 2025🎉
All of these vinyls went through a DIGITAL restored and remasterd, imprinting digitally processed sound into plastic is pure nonsense, the sound in plastic has less dynamics and weaker bass and high tones, occasionally you can hear the strong noise of plastic backing, 19,00 to 19,08 , sound on CD is much better and more dynamic...dear people, you lagged behind in a time of 50 years, you buy four times more expensive vinyls and you have a much weaker sound than on CD, but you dont have to believe me, buy the same title on the vinyl and CD, put the vinyl on a turntable , CD in CD player and listen to them in parallel, 10 seconds listen to the vinyl, 10 seconds listen to CD, you will immediately adapt the difference in dynamics, better deep and high tones, better stereo separation, generally higher quality sound image...I have been a discophile and audiophile for over 50 years, I had over 1.000 vinyls, after numerous and prolonged sound tests, I have replaced all vinyls with CD's...In 1877. Edison invented the phonograph, means that this technology mechanical cutting of sound in plastic is 148 years old...dear people, get back to the present, CD provides a much better sound for four times a smaller price...I wish all the discophiles a nice New Year and a lot of music...
These records are all analogue. We prefer the sound of records over the sound of CD. The sound of CD varies based on the ADC used to create it and then the DAC used to convert the information back to music. If you prefer that then why are you on this channel?

Thank you, Micheal. Love the revised format with the samples.
Wow. The format of this video is really great. Hope to see more of it❤
Nice with small soundsbites - makes the buying decision easier.
Completely agree, having the audio snippets just to hear the music, obviously not to evaluate quality, is truly fantastic
Michael as always a great interview and the Audio Quality is a nice addition.

I also collect 7inch vinyl albums too, I love one Gary numan, the song is called cars.
The Cat finde Ich super 💪
Ben Webster meets Oscar Peterson. 1960. Highly recommended
Over time, doesn't the belt lose it's elasticity and the records start playing at the wrong speed?
nope
Hi Michael! What type of cartridge are you using on that beautiful set up of yours?
It’s the Einstein PickUp they developed it together with the orthofon designer
