    I know it's not the most exciting video but hopefully it can help someone out there! It's a bit broad tips too - so ask anything or any clarification here!
    And don't forget, the color of your sock is the most important decision you can make! It's important that they match your shorts!

    You're my favorite ultra running channel! You always give good information, are honest about your struggles and how you manage them, and bonus points for being funny and entertaining. Thanks Simon!

      For real. This dude is great! Love his no BS approach. Gets right into the useful info, and he’s usually right on point. No gimmicky influencer bro science.

    Simon, your information is very good. I've run many 100's and have tried different items along the way, developing my own system and using products that work for me. I have done Leadville and concur with your assessment of headlamp needs, cold weather clothing, rain gear, etc. I thought you were quite accurate. I also appreciate that you weren't pushing certain brands, simply sharing what you use and sometimes adding why it has worked for you.
    You say that the tips are broad, but I like this. You gave an overview, thereby encouraging the new and experienced ultra-runner to try on their own via your guidelines - this is an approach that I favor as it allows me to learn but not have to start from scratch (though, when I started my ultra-journey, I kind of was starting from here)
    I am now a subscriber and am looking forward to exploring your library of videos. Thank you!

      Thanks! Really appreciate the kind words on this. And it's so true about "my own system". Same here - I have my "base things" that of course i'll bring no matter what (hello TP and imodium!) and plenty of "well let's think about what race this is" like shoes and layers.

    This was awesome, thanks! I love how you "taught us to fish", and didn't just give a gear list. I volunteered at a 100 mile recently, and was told by a runner that the gel caps of salt tabs impede absorption, and it's better to dump the salt directly into a coke to drink it. You're a scientist, does that sound beneficial?

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon  Рік тому +5

      Ah yes, I’m scientist AND pharmacist that used to teach at university that kind of stuff! Ultimately, the gel capsule will fully dissolve fairly quickly and you’ll absorb all of the salt (but comparatively slower than if you open and dissolve in coke or whatever). Salt is also super duper soluble in water, so that’s also not an issue for absorption. So in general, broadly speaking, the only reason you’d want to do that is if you need to have the salt reach your blood stream asap. Otherwise, doesn’t matter. So in the context of racing, its never a rush, so I hardly see any reason to do that. Plus the obvious disadvantage of opening it and dissolving it is that you ll be drinking a salty drink, which if you put too much salt per mL, is more likely to taste gross and even induce nausea. And really, if you are looking to drink a salty solution, instead of going through the trouble of opening a capsule and mixing it, you can simply take electrolyte drink which is essentially this already. And which really you SHOULD before taking pills (bonus for me is if the mix has sugar it’s a good source of calories). But the salt pills are when even that isn’t enough, or when you hit that point when sports drink induce nausea.
      I guess now what I should add since Leadville, is that you should make sure your throat isn’t too dry, otherwise the capsule could stick on the back of your throat lol. And you could puke. Damn it!

    Hey Simon! Do you have any sunglasses recommendations? I find the ones I use to be too dark most of the time, especially if the trail gets a little shady. Interested if you have found something that is a happy medium.

      Honestly, not really. I got mine on amazon - cheap brand. And they aren't that great. But I like that they are cheap, so I'm not worried about breaking them if I throw them in my dropbag or whatever. I can always get new ones.
