I'm getting my first Dizi Monday or Tuesday and your instructional videos are going to help so much, thanks for making them, as a matter of fact your song videos helped me decide on the dizi cause I love the sound and style of them
You're a great teacher. I recently bought my dizi. Cause I really wanted to play dizi so bad. I'm still a beginner. And I'm so thankful I found your channel. It's really a great help. Hope you can also include the corresponding notes of each fingering style of the dizi. I want to play wuji of "the untamed" and the tranquil of the angels.
Thank you for a great introduction to this wonderful instrument. I recently ordered one, and I binged watched your videos about it. Thank you so much for making these videos!
You should make this famous and make a Flute complete set with an instructional small book and dvd and start playing the Flute Chinese style. i would buy it. I really like it
LOL! I am nowhere near a pro man, I self taught on this thing and just do it for fun~ lots of better music out there~ but I must admit that the ending is quite nice with my new hardware! it's the hardware's magic! LOL!
***** hahaha! well, selling these things is not my interest for now, really not wanna spend the time for these things now, but maybe in the future we will think about that~ selling dizi can be very tricky too, cuz they can crack during shipment and you lost a few bucks! Recorders are cheap and often very durable cuz the material is not like bamboo~ :) I used to have like 5 recorders in different sizes too, damn that is cool eh? Imagine a recorder that can produce sound of a Xiao kinda tone?
Hi Mak... Jo... Si... Ahhhhhhhhh... a very soothing sound is made by the Chinese bamboo flute... very nice introductory demo and lesson.... thank you for sharing....
Kinetic1423 I see! Did you buy any Dimo (membrane) and the glue? I have a G here too, it's very high pitch compare to the D but it's still very fun to play! Different vibe! You got yourself some books too? A little tip here, if you just start it on the DIY route, try the tape method instead of the membrane first. The tape should be the thinner tape, not the thick scotch tape (translucent). Try something thinner, the clear tape(not packing tape!). Those will do the job and give you at least a stable sound so you know that if you cannot make a sound, it's for sure the problem from your end, and not the membrane. With dimo, it is very tricky, you can be blowing right, and the membrane got screwed and you cannot make a sound too. Right now I like the membrane more, but I must say that it's tricky to setup to the sweet spot. Takes practice!
Yes, i got the membrane and the glue too. Will try with tape first tho and practice putting on the membrane later :D I'm not sure were to get a dizi book tho. Can you recommend were i could get it? And maybe what songs i should start learning first? Thanks :)
Kinetic1423 If you ask me, I would say, don't follow those books first. Go and blow some sound, make noise, try to make some sound and play the scale, learn how to blow properly. When you can do that, then you can go about doing some DIY melody first and LISTEN to the sound to get them in your brain. When that stage is reached, you can think about getting books. I don't know any source for these books though. You can basically find the songs and stuff online too. When you got your dizi, let me know and we can see how to help you out! Actually I just got my student in HK to buy me some good dizi and stuff too! Man, I need a proper dizi for my training!
I just bought mine and didn't knew what the dek and membraine where for so this video helped me a lot. I was wondering how to put my hands in all these holes. Guess 6 makes a lot more easier to learn. I tried to use the glue but ended up breaking it into some pieces but think i managed it. Tri to play it now
Thank you for the great video. I was looking for piccolo instructional videos when I came across yours. I am now looking to buy a dizi instead. Looking forward to learning this wonderful instrument.
Thanks! I actually have loads of music equipments from wind to string and to drums and shit... but dizi and xiao is my primary that I can say that I am okay to perform something, the others are mainly still learning! You remember I got a temple? there goes tons of space for my music! hhahaha!
hey~ no need to oil your dizi! It's good to play just dry. If you really love to oil it, well.. rube some mineral oil inside and then rub it dry, that's all you will want to do. Boiled Linseed oil also works, but it smells like shit afterward for a long time.. lol... Your air and moisture is what makes it "lubed" there, no need to oil them at all actually (if you keep playing it often) What kind of dizi are you having? or buying? Bamboo is good with linseed, but redwood is CARE-FREE!
recently bought a Dizi in key D as I am a beginner.so far have sounds, have practice with membrane and tape, not yet oil dizi. I notice I am having a problem with the key hole 6, it feels far away and sometimes I find myself using my pinky finger to play that key. Q: is that normal ? the ring finger stays idle. thanks for the education.
Well, thanks to watching a few of your videos since this afternoon (when my Dizi arrived in the mail) I have finally been able to make a pretty good tone! I also keep loosing it, so must keep practicing, but it was exciting to finally get it going. Now please tell me do you play by ear or do you also read music? I taught myself the violin by ear and I hate to read, but I want to learn the fingering technique for this and any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Hello! Please, need your help. I want to start learning some transverse flute and chose to buy a dizi. Then i found fingering of notes and... Is it possible to play halftone notes on dizi?! I mean, if i buy G Key dizi, can i play G#, A#, and other notes out of scale?
Hello! I’m a beginner and am wondering about the maintenance of the flute... how can you determine that it’s dry and what oil should you use to make it moist? Also how would you oil it if it’s dry?
Thanks, I think the only difference is the soundon dizi is abit more vibrating and the native flute is not like that because they don't use a membrane for the sound. Just like the western flute, you need to do the vibration yourself with the air flow. But ya, it's about the same idea I guess.
Flute Ninja Btw, this one in the vid is D key, you can buy them in any key and I have most of them on youtube with review and demo. You can buy a C or D to start but a base G is very very sexy!
Chiinnature Haha! Great, will have to check those out. I've been listening to a lot of Chinese flute music, and the distinct sound of the dizi has caught my attention. The reason why I have hesitated to get one is because of the membrane. Regardless, I'll try it out. I see now from your video, it shouldn't be difficult to do.
Flute Ninja use a piece of tape, don't use membrane, that's the best starter membrane. Normal tape is fine, don't use the thick stuff or the milky color stuff. Membrane is a bitch to work with for start up. No need to go membrane yet, and the sound is just awesome without membrane but using tape. No worry! :)
mineral oil or linseed oil works, just need to oil the inside if your dizi is not lacquor'd inside, you can see if the inside is shiny or painted, if not, then it needs some oil there. Externally? no need.
Jeffry Junus never tried that, but I doubt the teflon will stick on for a long time, they don't bond to the dizi and they will loosen up soon or later which will result in no sound. Best to just stick with normal tape
hi chinnature i am from kuwait and i'd like to learn a tutorial about this music Chill Music For Playing as Yasuo (honestly no ads) and i didnt find it anywhere, can you help?
YovenOfficialSite that song is the song from wizard of oz, just find the song for it and that's the song. easy song too. 綠野仙蹤 is the song. I might play it on the flute later or something and demo it maybe, it's very easy! www.yuebagu.com/uploads/allimg/120318/co12031PZT8-0.gifanother demo on youtube:ua-cam.com/video/d-7Ht799TfI/v-deo.html
my thanks to u , i am new learner, but i got the begining of the song only but i cant make the other part of the song, i look forward, and i'd like you to read this message, so how am i good or not?
Nice guide! Do you know that more types of instrument exist back in Ancient China? Sadly most of the instruments are lost, or the knowledge of making it are lost. Only roughly about a fraction survived.
I have the GU-Zhen (Zither), drums, a few gongs and stuff, Erhu (3) and some other things.. but not good at them all though. Dizi and Xiao is my primary mostly.. and I also know the clarinet, saxiphone, flute in western music....
Chiinnature I think I didn't explain it clearly, I'm talking about the single mouth hole and have a huge semi oval to hold and several wind pipes sticking up.
HayrettinBalci The bamboo flute in my hand in the video is about $10 only, LOL! very entry level stuff, and I always want to find a good one but I think I have to go by person to buy it to be safe, sometimes they come CRACKED and you have no guarantee when the shipment is here. Dang!
Chiinnature this video finally inspired me to buy an okinawan Sanshin I'll see about the flute in the future, i just want to be sure I get the good stuff.
HayrettinBalci That's like our Erhu in Chinese, or Yee-Woo in Cantonese. I have 3 of those things, and we have 2 strings instead of 3! You know how to play that Japanese instrument?
It's true, part of what you have to BLOW the instrument and vibrate the tummy when you blow it is to exercise or vibrate the organs, sort of like chi kung too! It's a well known thing in the Chinese music world that playing these things can strengthen the organs and get you healthier too~
I like this guy, he is very good with these instruments and has a charisma for teaching, and love his laugh. Great job Mak Jo Si!!!!!!!!
I'm getting my first Dizi Monday or Tuesday and your instructional videos are going to help so much, thanks for making them, as a matter of fact your song videos helped me decide on the dizi cause I love the sound and style of them

Chiinnature Just a starter Kit with the Dizi and the rest of the supplies as a kit. Kinda like they sell the recorders

you are a super teacher !!!
Hi Mak... Jo... Si... Ahhhhhhhhh... a very soothing sound is made by the Chinese bamboo flute... very nice introductory demo and lesson.... thank you for sharing....
Thanks ~~ glad you like it!!
You're awesome Mac. Thanks for teaching us a little bit about your culture.
Thank you for watching! :)
Hi Mark,
Thanks for your introducing Chinese Flute in English.
I really like your sharing and the way you speak...... Thank you my friend 😊👍
Great video! Really needed this :D there are so few videos for the Dizi on UA-cam! Will get my Dizi in about 10 days!
Keep up the videos!
Great! are you learning it yourself? or from a teacher? What is your dizi key?
I am learning it myself because i live in Norway and the dizi is really unknown here. I got the G-key dizi.
Kinetic1423 I see! Did you buy any Dimo (membrane) and the glue? I have a G here too, it's very high pitch compare to the D but it's still very fun to play! Different vibe! Your videos are really helpful. I learned how to make a sound on the Dizi. The tape trick works well
Really good advice. Especially the thing at the beginning (how to maintain the flute itself). Now I have to practice it!
I just bought mine and didn't knew what the dek and membraine where for so this video helped me a lot. I was wondering how to put my hands in all these holes. Guess 6 makes a lot more easier to learn. I tried to use the glue but ended up breaking it into some pieces but think i managed it. Tri to play it now
your play music to? is there anything you cant do? your the best Mak!
LOL Actually I have loads of music equipment in my temple too, but not good at everything though, hahaha!
Thank you for the great video. I was looking for piccolo instructional videos when I came across yours. I am now looking to buy a dizi instead. Looking forward to learning this wonderful instrument.
Your actually really good!! I never knew you owned or played any type of flute!
Thanks! I actually have loads of music equipments from wind to string and to drums and shit... but dizi and xiao is my primary that I can say that I am okay to perform something, the others are mainly still learning! You remember I got a temple? there goes tons of space for my music! hhahaha!
Love this guy!!!
Awesome I've been wanting to play the Chinese Flute for years, I got one now I need to learn to play it. Do you have a video showing how to oil it

Chiinnature it's one I got from China Bamboo a "G" from Amazon. Love it, I put a selotape membrane on until I can get to China town
Sensei Ken I see! Those should be purple bamboo I guess? if yes, you can just play it dry, no need to oil much for those~
Chiinnature it's varnished with some Chinese writing and a Red decorative string. Came with membrane and oil. Thanks so much Sifu
Sensei Ken The oil? what oil?
recently bought a Dizi in key D as I am a beginner.so far have sounds, have practice with membrane and tape, not yet oil dizi. I notice I am having a problem with the key hole 6, it feels far away and sometimes I find myself using my pinky finger to play that key. Please how do I learn how to play this instrument from Nigeria?

Hello Im a beginner And I really dont know how to control the breathing hope you can help me
How to buy good dizi, i bought a few but the sound not so good
I like your clips.
Thx!
Hello! Please, need your help.
I want to start learning some transverse flute and chose to buy a dizi. Then i found fingering of notes and... Is it possible to play halftone notes on dizi?! I mean, if i buy G Key dizi, can i play G#, A#, and other notes out of scale?
Елизавета Постол hard, but not impossible.
Chiinnature by covering half of the hole?
Елизавета Постол
yes
Chiinnature ok,thanks...
Good day sir.. Can you do a music with step by step fingerin with a chart and on how to blow??? Thank you sir..
Hello! I’m a beginner and am wondering about the maintenance of the flute... how can you determine that it’s dry and what oil should you use to make it moist? Also how would you oil it if it’s dry?
Sounds very identical to native american style flutes, good sound

Very nice sound!
Could you tell me what key your flute is in?
I have been thinking about getting one of these
Flute Ninja Cool! Get one and start playing! Its not that hard. If you got questions you can ask me :)
Flute Ninja Btw, this one in the vid is D key, you can buy them in any key and I have most of them on youtube with review and demo. You can buy a C or D to start but a base G is very very sexy!

The reason why I have hesitated to get one is because of the membrane. Regardless, I'll try it out. I see now from your video, it shouldn't be difficult to do.
Chiinnature Also, did you make up that melody (the membrane version)
Flute Ninja use a piece of tape, don't use membrane, that's the best starter membrane. Normal tape is fine, don't use the thick stuff or the milky color stuff. Membrane is a bitch to work with for start up. No need to go membrane yet, and the sound is just awesome without membrane but using tape. No worry! :)
exactly how do you apply the oil to the dizi? do you use something to oil the inside? thank you :)
I mean, do you oil both inside and outside? and how? I will try the mineral oil you linked in a previous response :)
mineral oil or linseed oil works, just need to oil the inside if your dizi is not lacquor'd inside, you can see if the inside is shiny or painted, if not, then it needs some oil there. Externally? no need.
Hi if i haven’t that glue what can i use to put the membrane on?
hello my friend ,my question is what type of oil should I be using and how do I do it
chopstick thrower Oiling dizi ? mineral oil or lindseed works,
Hi Mak Jo Si, I used teflon tape (plumbing tape) on my G-key dizi. What are your thoughts?
Jeffry Junus never tried that, but I doubt the teflon will stick on for a long time, they don't bond to the dizi and they will loosen up soon or later which will result in no sound. Best to just stick with normal tape
My classmate opens the music conservatory there. 多倫多中國音樂學院。
Hello, really nice tunes in the vid. Do you have any experience with the Japanese Shinobue, it's less common than Shakuhachi I think.
republic0316 um.. nope, not yet :)
could you tell me what kind of oil to use on these? will olive oil?
+Jason Summer mineral oil will do, not olive oil
+Chiinnature do you mean, like a laxative?
vasaline?
bag balm?
or is it more specific than that?
+Jason Summer www.amazon.com/Swan-Mineral-Oil-USP-oz/dp/B005BUNQSM/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1446885674&sr=8-6&keywords=mineral+oil
+Jason Summer i am already very specific, mineral oil the name, see that link i just posted
+Chiinnature okay, thank you so much for your help!
How to take higher notes? ?
Здравствуйте, а немогли бы вы добавить русские субтитры?

YovenOfficialSite I will try to make a video of that song later on in the week or something, and maybe you can get some inspiration from it! :)
thanks! i will wait for it ! :)
What is the glue name?

Nice!!!
Thanks~ listened to the ending? that part is kinda nice~
do yo have the sheng?
Chinese zither? yes I do --> Taoism Chinese Zither (Gu-Zheng) - Tao Purifying the Mysterious Realm Melody
Chiinnature I think he meant 笙. the thing with wooden organ. (chinese mouth organ as i call it!)
mr_os oh, no I do not have that and not very interested at that yet....
mr_os Yeah, that guy knows what I'm saying.
Chiinnature I think I didn't explain it clearly, I'm talking about the single mouth hole and have a huge semi oval to hold and several wind pipes sticking up.
What key is your flute in?
D~
Where is your location? Who teaches you.
I does not teach music, please don't be mistaken
I am in SF, where r u? U can speak Cantonese, right ?
Yes I speak cantonese, I am in Toronto
aaahhh sound of asia
hahaha, watch the ending, there is a full solo piece there, very relaxing indeed~
Chiinnature
very nice, you are quite skilled
I want to get a bamboo flute soon, or a shamisen, if they weren't so expensive.
HayrettinBalci
The bamboo flute in my hand in the video is about $10 only, LOL! very entry level stuff, and I always want to find a good one but I think I have to go by person to buy it to be safe, sometimes they come CRACKED and you have no guarantee when the shipment is here. Dang!
