Strep throat infection is very serious. I caught it at the age of 23. Within hours, I was in hospital with a roaring fever. The throat pain was unbearable. I was put on an antibiotic drip and given pain relief. I was in a room alone and all the medics wore masks. 2 days later, I was cleared to go home. Spent 3 days in bed and made a full recovery. I learned that strep infection is very serious and must never be Ignored.
Wow. I’m so sorry. I had it recently but at the time my university messed up my insurance so I took antibiotics from Mexico that my older sister who is a doctor had lying around. Thank god. I was in bed for a week in pain, feverish, etc. but it was manageable. You must have had a higher quantity of bacteria. I also got it as a kid on a few occasions. Very lucky nothing like this transpired unless it explains why I developed severe depression in elementary school.

Wow. My kids have had it many many times. I’ve had it two-three times a year every year and so has my husband. It can actually go away on its own, but sometimes it doesn’t so it’s better to treat.

Both of them are stricken with an autoimmune disease that causes them to be violent, lash out, depressed, and start crying on a dime. . .and it's so heartbreaking because they know something is wrong with them as well as their family but they can't explain why or what is wrong with them. And then, the kids are eventually ripped away from their parents and get admitted to the psychiatric ward at 4/10 years old. They lose all contact with anyone and are not allowed to speak to their parents except for 1 hour a day. . .and they don't understand why. They just want to go home. :*(.
Kids are way smarter than we ever give them credit for. Both of this kids clearly knew something was wrong too. There was some kind of battle waging inside their bodies that was eating at them, clawing at them, tearing them apart, and all they know is that the people they love the most are getting hurt from this. They hate it and it hurts them not to know what's going on, not being able to tell their loved ones what's wrong, and they hate that their family is getting hurt because of this. It's why it's so important to not only find a diagnosis but to treat kids with actual respect and dignity throughout all this because they are smart and capable.

I got strep throat A LOT threw year 2011-2017 I haven't got it as much as I do now I use to get it every other 2 months or so it was crazy Thank YOU Jesus I did not get this...

My son had “strep” for 18 Months in one form or another. I finally had to ask the doctor review his entire chart, she was dumbfounded. Thankfully two more rounds of vey strong antibiotics, solved the problem. PANDAS is new to me I am thankful to not have experienced it.
I do know strep throat causes rheumatic fever and a bad heart. Damages the valve.

Pandas is where the brain has an autoimmune reaction to the strep and the antibodies produced, hurts the brain. if you’ve had strep before this won’t happen. this is also associated with children.

If a four-year-old is sent to a psychiatry ward after strep throat, then I would hope that psychiatrist would look at the possibility of PANDAS before giving her a bag full of medication. Mental health is an important issue to treat, but we need to start understanding the mind body connection better.

What is PANDAS
PANDAS is short for Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections.
I'm sure that they gave her a bag full of different loads of meds instead of prescribing her something minimal, most likely one medication and it was also her parents decision to send her to a hospital, she stabbed her mother in the eye. a psychiatrist's job is to asses mental function and to help give a medication that could help soothe her EMOTIONS, well enough to be handled. It takes a long time to figure this out as a parent with other children and a job, there's so much that's going on why you people even speak on it when you've probably never even seen one yourself.
America is way too dependent on prescription drugs as a means to "fix" mental illnesses and other medical conditions. I don't blame the average American- it's big pharma companies and these supposed "professionals" that are responsible for looking after people.

Many children go through this in their family, causing their parents to react or give them a spanking bringing the child even more frustration and anger because they dont know what's happening to them and they dont know how to explain it to their parents......so round and round we go to drs and big pharma and get even worse results...pharmaceutical..witchcraft, magic..sorcery....

My husband is a pediatric Occupational Therapist and see kids with PANDAS, it is a very complicated disease, challenging and expensive for parents to deal with. Several cases of PANDAS I know of have been triggered by Lyme disease from a tic.
Mainly diet and gut healing therapies (GAPS diet, probiotics, etc.) have helped the kiddos my husband treats.
I get strep throat like once a year when I was a child. I'm so glad this never happened to me before.

+Eira Zea-Kids are way smarter than we ever give them credit for. Both Parker and Alexia realized something was wrong with them and they were trying to tell their parents what was wrong in any way they could and any way as a kid that they are able to describe it, especially when they didn't fully know what the problem was. But they did realize and reached the conclusion on their own that after the strep infection, SOMETHING happened to them and something was still wrong with them.
But they realized on their own that their behavior was unusual and it did make them unhappy and even sad to realize they were hurting their loved ones. It's heartbreaking-they love their family and would never want to hurt them-the PANDAS was making them do things that they didn't want to. And as Parker himself implied to the reporter over the incident with the knife, he didn't have full control of his body or mind at the time.
So any time kids tell you that something is wrong with them, even if it is small, ALWAYS listen to them. Because they will tell you in their way when there is something wrong with them.
you're right on the mark. Parker is brilliant, and I don't use that term lightly. He often holds the hightest grade in his classes. Junior year in high school awaits in the fall. Watching this again 6 years later and trying to unpack my grief. Parker is doing better but still not 100. Really close, but we are still reaching. Thank you for your kind words and observation. We believe in Parker whole heartedly!
PANDAS is a decevingly adorable name for something so horrible, especially in childeren. I cried watching this, since I have experienced anxiety and other such problems, and it's not something I would wish on anyone, and definitely not in such an extreme form as this.

I read a book many years ago about a boy that had this. His mom went through years of doctor appointments and sleeping outside his room to keep an eye on home. It’s a true story. The things they went through was horrifying. He was finally diagnosed with PANDAS. A permanent course of augmentin keeps it under control.
I honestly wonder how many children were beat dam near to death by their parents thinking they are "just acting out" & needed harder discipline. 😢

My entire family thinks I'm too soft and nuts bc I don't agree with beating children (they call it spanking, but it goes beyond that with certain ones of them). Certain members of my family don't believe that children are people too, imo. Like you cant have a bad day, cant get angry, cant have a moment of impulse...yet these are all things adults do and they expect to be overlooked. When a child does it, beat them? No. Teach them maybe. Talk it out with them. If they deliberately broke a rule, then punish them with consequences. But no beating necessary.

Well seeing this behavior the first day for the first time without having any knowledge of PANDAS, it would be any parent's natural instinct to discipline them for bad behavior. It's not the parents fault and it's not the child's fault. Nobody knew and it just happened. Just a natural instinct to discipline because they think they're just acting out that day. No parent would ever jump straight to the conclusion that it's PANDAS. Nobody knew so they reacted how any normal parent would. But of course after a month or so, they would be concerned.

I had strep throat once when I was younger. My mom said I used to be a talkative kid. I’m not sure if this was after the sickness, but I ended up drifting away from people, and becoming antisocial. Now that I’m a 12th grader I’m breaking out this shell.

I mean, puberty is a big change for people. Just developing social anxiety doesn't sound like PANDAS. PANDAS involves a lot more OCD symptoms and drastic behavior. I also developed social anxiety during puberty, but it's not related to the condition they are talking about in the video.

Those poor children, I’ve never heard of “Panda’s” or anything else resulting from getting Strep throat. It must be terrifying for both child & parents when the kids have an episode, the fact that the kids know there is something wrong but are unable to do anything about it must be so traumatic for them. I had strep several times as a kid in the 1970's, I think I had/have PANDAS, it would explain a lot, but this is the first time I've heard of a diagnosis even though I realized the synchronicity and a few of my doctor's made the connection they never told me why or what it might mean. so sorry to hear that. My nephew was 12 years old when he got strep infection and he was subsequently hospitalized in a mental asylum. The medication didn't bring him "back" to normality - we sadly merely live with this now.

How horrible and what about children that never get treated...do they grow up to be some kind of uncontrollable psychopath? And how many adults are in prisons because they never were diagnosed. A chilling thought.
Even without treatment, symptoms tend to subside quite a bit during puberty, but treatment improves the chances of complete and earlier remission.

There are treatments available. Some treatments are in earlier stages of effectiveness trials, yet most kids I have worked with who present with PANDAS/PANS get better. The first line of treatment seems to be medical therapy - not so much psychiatric drugs, but appropriate antibiotic care and some other kinds of immunotherapies (which can be controversial in the medical community). Once acute symptoms are controlled, cognitive-behavioral therapies featuring graduated exposures can help any remaining OCD or tic/tourettes symptoms. PANDAS/PANS is not willful or on-purpose behavior. The children are just as scared as their parents, loved ones and teachers. PANDAS/PANS is not psychopathy.

I use to get these when I was younger. It lasted quite a while but eventually “outgrew” it. They were terrifying because I had no idea what was going on and couldn’t control myself whatsoever. Very thankful it went away, and prayers go out to him and his family.

I know someone whose son was dx with Pandas. It took long term antibiotics and though he was better some, now IVgg infusions. But sending them to psychiatrists scares me.
Going to psychiatrists shouldn't scare you--you don't have to commit your child to see a psychiatrist. Second opinions are always good of course, if you have bad feelings about any doctor. Seeing a psychiatrist saved my life--I could not recover from major depression for years until I saw an actual psychiatrist (rather than just doctors, nurses, and therapists) and she helped me safely find a medication combination that put me back to normal. The training and education of a psychiatrist makes them extremely helpful. Nobody needs to agree to medicate their child without doing their research or getting a second opinion if they want. Please don't discount psychiatrists though. As with everything, the few "horror" stories are vastly outnumbered by the millions helped whose stories never become news. And remember that most went into this career specifically because they want and like to help people.

The pain the parents are going through is indescribable.
I am so glad Nightline interviewed Dr. Swedo! I am a child and adolescent psychologist and saw her present at a PANDAS/PANS conference a few years back and was happy to hear her updates about the research being done in this area. At that point, I had interviewed about 3 to 4 families of young children who had similar, devastating presentations - almost just overnight, as these two families tearfully describe. I have a few thoughts: 1) this is neurological and not a willful behavioral choice - the kids presenting with these symptoms after strep or another viral illness are not in control and are not "bad or damaged;" 2) these behavioral changes are not their fault, their family's fault or any other person's fault; 3) effective medical treatments are available! - some are not wholly embraced by the medical community, yet medical interventions are catching up and some pediatric specialists in your area may have good ideas for referrals; and 4) with some of the really severe, acute behaviors in better control, CBT for OCD, tics, tourettes can help a child/teen and their family better control remaining symptoms and watch for signs of future "flare-ups."
My son is going through this now. He has strep now again. He is on some scary strong antibiotics. He also has ocd with intrusive thoughts and extreme panic attacks and anxiety and worst of all in this situation is that he is intellectually disabled fairly severely and it's hard for him to understand as his level of comprehension is not on the level of other children. We are researching pandas and so much more but most doctor's have no idea what it is. He also fears having sleepovers anywhere even before all of this and he has trust issues. I feel like checking him into a phychiactric institution under his circumstances would only traumatize him and not help. This video is so relatable and yet most doctor's don't understand and are not willing to listen and I cried watching this video bc while Peter is extreme in many ways like these kids but also not in some ways. Every case is different. He isn't eating for so long because of this. It is just devastating and he 100 percent for sure is not the same boy he once was and I just want my son back, whoever he is, I know the real him and just want the real him back. He has been through enough and cannot catch a break this poor kid. This is the hardest thing we have ever had to deal with and we have dealt with alot and are still dealing with a ton right now even in life but nothing like what he is going through. This is our biggest worry and concern even with so many major and scary things going on in life. We are working on it and seeing different doctor's and making appointments still but I just want him better.

+Timonthy Verheyn Jr.-To be fair, I don't think most kids, fortunately. . .will have to suffer from PANDAS like Parker and Alexia had to. It is a rare autoimmune disorder where after an infection, the body will start eating at your own brain, causing similar behaviors to mental illness.
And while a lot of doctors are still on the fence about considering PANDAS an actual illness, I believe this truly legitimate and needs to be studied further. After all, you DON'T see that drastic change in behavior from a kid unless there is some sort of trauma involved and if the kid's immune system is eating at the brain. . . it does make a lot of sense. There needs to be a better understanding of just why and how the immune system will start targeting the brain like that in these poor kids. There needs to be better treatment and prevention of "triggers" that can cause PANDAS like strep.

+Lila. D-No. . .because there is no vaccine currently to treat or prevent strep. The only way to treat strep is to take antibiotics. You can argue, and there should be research put into it, that perhaps the antibiotics help contribute to that bizarre, negative auto-immune reaction after the strep that can create PANDAS, but if so, that's not necessarily the medicine's fault either. It's more due to the fact SOME people have some kind of autoimmune deficiency where after a "trigger" such as strep comes around, the autoimmune system will behave erratically and even attack things it shouldn't. With PANDAS, the autoimmune system seems to attack parts of the brain after a "trigger" and for whatever reason, antibiotics really seem to help curb a lot of the PANDA symptoms-at least it did with Alexia and Parker.

I had this at 8 years old. My symptoms were non stop facial tics unbearable anxiety, beliefs that someone was “behind a tree about to kill my mom , mom you need to move over there are spikes growing out of my body they’re going to kill you” I would have to go to my dad 100s of times a day saying dad I had a bad thought and explain images flashing through my head. This is no joke I’m lucky I made it through god bless this family I’m 27 now and can say YES THIS IS 100% real. We got blessed with a neurologist who diagnosed it early and I suffered for a month and a half

I remember as a teen after having strep for almost a month I became deppressed and my mood changed a lot. I do believe bacteria and viruses can destroy your mental health too. Your body is a system if something isnt right the whole thing falls apart. Hope they are getting the help they need.

I see so many saying that they have never heard of PANDAS. That’s because it wasn’t accepted as real by conventional medicine. It was always blamed on other things such as autism. Strep can also cause Toxic Shock Syndrome and Sepsis. I always take my son in if he has a sore throat and fever to get tested for strep. People think I’m overly cautious but I have lifelong issues due to a virus.
Half a year ago I was released from a mental hospital. I stayed for almost 4 months because of crippling anxiety. Mental hospitals are nothing like in the movies. There are professionals who care about you and take care of you and your brain to make you healthy and ready for the world. It's honestly changed me so much.

My cousin had crippling depression and she almost attempted suicide and she went to a mental hospital and she’s still very depressed but that’s because our doctors are shite and can’t give her the right dang medication but she said that the hospital helped her so much and it makes me cry when people say that they are getting better because I know how terrible it can be!! Oh my god I knew from the very beginning it was about this. I have had this since 2015, 7 years now I’m still in shock that it’s finally getting recognized. When I had it, it started with a sore throat too and my parents thought I had seizures but I was twitching and back then there were very few that knew about it. When I was getting mad I felt like I was trapped just watching myself say bad things. Then after, I would always ask myself, “what’s wrong with me .” I really just want to be normal and it would drain all of my energy. I would never remember anything. It felt like it was in a dream and we found out like 2 or 3 years after. We went from doctor to doctor. I was just getting medicine that would not help. I gained so much weight on one medication and when I got sick I would get super mad out of nowhere. We learned that when I would get mad then it meant I was sick and I got no other symptoms like fevers etc. I would just get mad and what my doctor said is that when I get sick my white blood cells instead of killing the bacteria they go and pretty much just attack my brain. So my brain would get inflamed and that’s why I got mad but then people and doctors were learning about it . We drove so far to find doctors. That’s mostly my story and I’m still in treatment including IVIG and meds. I’m still in treatment but I’m getting better so that’s my story. If any one else has pans or pandas, I pray you get better soon. I would love to hear others stories too.
I had almost the same at 10 years old and then I got the diagnostic of depression, extreme anxiety ocd and paranoia. Today I am medicated and I have episodes 1-2 times on a month, I hope those children feel better and grown up without this struggles
I got it at age 7. You are not alone! There are adult PANDAS/PANS support groups on Facebook. Sharing my experiences with them has helped me a lot.
+1887-The good news about Alexia and Parker is that they're on a routine round of antibiotics now. That really seems to curb a lot of the PANDAS symptoms-Alexia's mother even noted later that except for a rare outburst, Alexia is actually doing far better now and she's still a sweet, bright kid. Same goes for Parker-you can tell even in the interviews on this special that he's much better now-it's just that his outbursts before PANDAS was diagnosed for him just gives him an understandable discomfort/embarrassment about it.
Hopefully when they grow up, they will both feel much less embarrassed over what happened and take a pro-active role in treating PANDAS. As long as they do that, I think these kids will be just fine.

Can’t imagine, but I believe it. I’ve had multiple strep, ear nose and throat infections as a kid and have epilepsy. Before the episode I’d see weird things, feel terrified, get super talkative or silent. As a kid I can’t imagine trying to understand these things! I was a teen luckily when my major symptoms started. Luckily I’m better, still have a few seizures but I manage! Hang in there. If you don’t get results from one doctor or feel they aren’t understanding the situation find another ❤️

The difference in both children during an episode and normal is insane, so sad they probably black out when it’s happening, and to the sweetest kids :(
Those kids outbursts look like my daughters “freak outs”, except hers were caused by allergies. I had no idea allergies could cause my child to become borderline autistic with tantrums that were terrifying but every time her eczema flaired up & her plethora of allergic symptoms appeared she’d change. Trying to jump out of a moving car, biting me, hitting herself or worse. We ended up doing protective use of force which is basically wrapping her up in our arms and legs and not letting her hurt herself or others. Fortunately dietary changes helped but weren’t as helpful for the environmental allergies she’s suffers from as well. Fortunately she seems to have outgrown the worst. But I never knew allergies could do this. But allergies are epidemic now it seems, I knew one kid with a food allergy growing up yet now every other kid has them and they can be deadly. There’s something wrong in our food, air, water, environment, etc., and it’s impacting our kids. Yet we’re now allowing even more toxic shit into the environment. (Thanks Scott Pruitt, your legacy is more then over the top corruption.) At the same time we don’t have the kind of health care we need to deal with it bc we have a for profit system. I had to cobble together testing and treatment for my kid bc I’m not independently wealthy. We are the richest country in the world with a ton of money for massive tax cuts for corporations yet we can’t take care of all of the children in our country? This scarcity bullshit is a ploy. We are choosing to spend our money on things other then the health of our ppl and our children. Or our children’s education. We have plenty of money but we’ve been told by corrupt politicians who are essentially being bribed by big business to tell us that there’s not enough money except for when it’s for war or tax cuts for the .1%. I’m lucky compared to some parents bc some parents have no resources. But even ppl with more then I have are being forced to make terrible choices in a desperate attempt to help their kids.
After PANDAS develops, allergies can cause it to flare up, and flares can take a kid from 0 to 100 in a day. Maybe it's worth looking into?

Seek a good naturopathic physician and natural therapies for the remaining allergies. Heal the leaky gut issues, and eat only certified organic foods. Grains have Glyphosate/RoundUp which causes hole in the gut causing leaky gut syndrome.
Hi Zoey, it may be worth looking into something called helminthic therapy to see if it is something that might help. I recommend a resource called the "heminthic therapy wiki", it has lists of research articles, an understandable intro, and lots more.
+Zoey Zoey-Zoey-It's wasn't the allergies that necessarily caused the PANDA symptoms in your child. The allergies were really just a "trigger" for a bizarre autoimmune response. It was the autoimmune response that started to "eat" at the brain, which caused these bizarre behaviors. Fortunately, it seems that antibiotics and sometimes diet changes can help offset most of these PANDA symptoms and hopefully, your daughter is doing much better now.
As for WHY her body started to do that in response to allergies. . .I can't say. Autoimmune diseases are strange and there's still not enough resources/information into why some people are perfectly fine while others do get these bizarre responses from their body. I have a sister who has Type 1 diabetes-my mom suspects it came about after her pancreas was damaged from strep as a kid and slowly wore down. . .I had the same strep and I never had that problem. . .Why I was fine and she wasn't. . .it's hard to say. . . We just need to be able and willing to explore and determine more information on it, and those who do have autoimmune disorders should be told early that they have warning signs so they can treat or prevent anything that may come from it.

Holy crap my daughter had her tonsils out after numerous bouts of strep at age 8. By age 10 she was vomiting 16 days at a time every 3 months. At age 12 she was in hospitals for both that and mental illness behavior by age 14 we had a cutting child in and out of hospitals 8 times. By age 16 she became violent hurting others in the hospital and just this month attacked me hitting me 20 times. Breaking my hand and causing a severe concussion. I tried to fight back but shes 20 and 260 pounds I'm under 160. Then shes been in jail for hurting a patient in a hospital and for hurting me. I cant find a facility long term to put her in. I'm scared my family is scared. They say she has bipolar and schizophrenia and she thinks shes a boy. She is a cutter and takes tons of meds. I never thought about strep maybe having a connection to this. But maybe my child really is mentally ill.

As someone with anxiety, I can somewhat relate to this video.
Although I did not harm other people, I DID try to harm myself. But don't worry, nothing extreme like the knife in the video. I would constantly scratch myself anytime I had a panic attack. And my panic attacks could come on at any time. I would scream and yell, just like those poor kids. I would feel very scared and angry and sad all at the same time. I had to go through therapeutic processes to get through this, but even those didn't help.
Basically, I'm trying to get you to semi-understand how they are feeling. They seem to have the same symptoms of my anxiety, but at a much higher level, which is harming others as well. I would run around, scream, slam doors, lots of scary stuff. I just like...I lost myself basically. It feels like someone just said the meanest, harshest, most offensive thing EVER to you on a personal level. That's how I can describe the anger and sadness. The fear? Well, that's part of my anxiety. However, I don't know where the fear here is coming from, although it could definitely be caused by PANDAS. I just hope you guys know this isn't a joke, and uhm yeah. Please just, take care of yourself and others, and stay positive.

When I had Strep when I was kid it resulted in me having seizures and they can’t find the cause but just that its affecting the left part of my brain. I’m 23 and up until now still on medication.
