I have a folding Zizzo and considering an upgrade. Road bikes are to delicate. Mountain bikes are to heavy. Gravel bikes have racing drop bars instead of straight bar. Older light weight hybrids seem the way to go; rugged double wall rims, no suspension, straight bar. Trend is to modernize an old hybrid with 11 rear gears and no front gears. Disc brakes not needed as they are more maintenance and expense. That's my take. Good luck on your hunt.
This was great fun to watch. Thanks! My two favorite bikes are my old italian loop frame folder single speed and my Lectric lite E folder. Neather have fat tires but the bmx style tires good everywhere well. And before I replaced the wheels on the Old Italian model they weighed about the same. Both have unlimited range with the low gearing I use but the Electric one really adds 50 hills to my knee's maximum number of hills.
Your channel has so much potential. Team up with bike shops to test ride bikes and showcase their products. Maybe they can sponsor you with a long term bike which you swap out after a time with another one. Point out the brand names and maybe a manufacturing sponsor will come on board. Do this in all major centers of NZ. You could become the CarWOW of bikes. Races, reviews, etc. All the best.
I lived in Paraparaumu and worked in Wellington from 2007-2009. I used to ride my bike almost daily, and had a kiddie-trailer to take my young son shopping in Coastlands, and to take our recycling to the bins there. A couple of days before we repatriated to England, we were doing our final shopping trip to Coastlands and a bloke was waiting outside one of the shops. He looked puzzled at my son and I and our trailer, and asked "Don't you have to wear a helmet if you are towing a trailer then?" I said "Helmet?" So he explained that they are compulsory in New Zealand, but I had never worn one, didn't know about it, and had been riding blissfully unaware of that law for my entire time there; I had even ridden past occupied police-cars in traffic, but no-one ever told me that cycling-helmets are a legal requirement until my very last trip to the shops there! 😂
I had a fixie for a bit. Pretty fun to ride because you just have to go max speed everwhere. Usually they have a freewheel on one side of the hub and a fixed gear on the other. That means you cant coast, you can never stop pedalling! You are meant to break with your legs. Having a front break makes you less than fully hardcore. The fixed gear actually gives you very good control at low speed, such as in traffic at the lights, one of the reasons they are a thing for bicycle curiours
@@hobocyclist i want someone to make a hiest movie that is basically point break except they are bicycle curiours that rob banks and then ride away on bikes, the fat cops cant catch them etc
Been commuting daily in wellington CBD - use a surly midnight special which is essentially an all road/adventure bike with high volume slick tyres. Fast and low rolling resistance, able to tackle all the local gravel trails up the skyline and hutt valley and good for hitting curbs in the city. Also has good compatibility with standard racks and readily available parts. Made sense to me to be able to use my bike for commuting while at the same time doing gravel trails and 40+kph runs (with a headwind) to get my heart pumping after a long day.
Great start to your new series, looking forward to each episode! For flat smooth roads & staying at accessible campsites then that large blue cargo bike would be brill to carry everything! Looking out for next vid!
Cheers mate, had fun with this one! Some great bikes out there, I would’ve liked to ride the recumbent trike around the waterfront there are great cycleways
A shame you didn't come across any native Mountain bikes, found on the many regard hills surrounding the capital. I have several captive on my section including a Giant Faith and an american import, Foes Weasel.
Looking for a new bike for yourself? I don't think that was clear until the end there... But id love to see you on a "new" bike! Looking forward to more episodes, maybe try to get a couple quick interviews to catch people being real candidly in love with their bikes!

I’m living on the road for a while, using a car & tent as my accommodation, and I couldn’t fit my bike in with everything else! I still have the folding bike, in fact I’m heading back to pick it up again - it will feature in future videos!!
@@hobocyclist I rewatched all your European trip videos last night I think I’m gonna go and do a 1 week wild camping cycle trip just to see what it’s like to sleep outdoors in a tent. Affording to stay in hotels is for rich people lol

Wish I could find a rusty brompton under a bridge somewhere and fix it up, I'm sure they would look so much better with a little grime and rust
I would say a Brompton e-bike would be the perfect bicycle for pretty much every occasion, budget notwithstanding.

Love this!
I live in Wellington, specifically Newtown. I ride single/fixy. I can switch between the two with a special "flip-flop hub."
