I have been for a long while an atheist. I have also been "on the inside" and a minister and seminary training. this man is preaching. it is very subtle but if you stop it at key moments and bother to think about what is being said you WILL hear it.
its a fine line and some persons that call themselves "educators" can NOT tell the diff.

Let me sum up this talk so you don't have to suffer through almost one and a half hour of crappy audio and ditto reasoning; A Christian believer finds that, yep Jesus is totally real. Just like the Holy Bible says. You can now go back to sleep.

The C.S. Lewis quote is so arrogant - it attempts to frame the question within rules that claim to be definitive, but are actually quite patronizing and presumptive. Lewis doesn't even realize that Jesus may not even have thought of himself as divine, and that those layers may have been added by later thinkers. Does that mean that we owe our allegiance to every leader for whom divinity was claimed by their followers? No, to Lewis, only the one he accepts. Typical.

The gospels of "Luke," "Mattew," "Mark" and "John" were all written by anonymous writers. These names were just attributed to them in lieu of their true names -- which remain unknown to this day.

We have contemporary archaeological evidence of the existence of Pilate (coins & a dedicated stone inscription, in particular) whereas not only is there no such evidence for Jesus, but we even know for a fact, for instance, that the city of Nazareth didn't exist in the first century, but was built after Constantine's mother Helena decided to believe that there was the spot talked about in the Christian texts...

From what I studied before in History of Christianity classes doing Christian Theology there is no such thing as plenty of material that strongly corroborates historical Jesus. The earlier one I remember, referring "directly" to Jesus, was a letter between Roman authorities about a disturbancies caused by a sect because of some Cresto. Later on, when there is more persecution the documents refer to what christians say, not Jesus figure (In Bettenson's book, documents of the christian church).
Yes, Chrestus existed, so to speak, BCE which explains why all the Christian churches were there before Paul.
There's more for Jesus than any of the Greek playwrights we all assume lived and Alexander the Great!

Christianity was "founded" because of him, but not by him. If Jesus had "founded" Christianity, it would have looked nothing like it did at that time. He certainly would not approve of what it looks like now, or approve of any of history's "Christians" using his name in the manner that they have.

TheLookingOne It's mostly of the methodology and the field of study concerning the historical Jesus. Imo this serves as a good tool for working out the questions about the historicity of Jesus. I used to be a Christian until I found out the New Testament is a false doctrine. Who wrote the Gospels? I thought the Disciples wrote it but they didn’t. If you read the play called THE REPUBLIC by Plato you’ll find lots of the famous sayings of Paul. Jesus is fictional as well as most people in the New Testament including Mary and Joseph.

I am always amazed when apologists claim the NT is the best attested work of the ancient world. We have hundreds of Egyptian hieroglyphic writings, in their ORIGINAL form, for example on pyramid walls that pre-date the Gospels by centuries. Not copies of copies of works written by anonymous writers decades and centuries later. Why should I be impressed by the fact that monks in the Middle Ages made thousands of copies of whatever Bible versions they happened to have around?

@@theinsane101 Saying Jesus is the best attested Jew from the ancient world is first, false, because Josephus was obviously better attested (you know, we have his actual writings, try getting your hands on the writings or any other relic of Jesus's), plus to be the best attested Jew of Palestine two thousand years ago is like saying I'm the best ice skater in Saudi Arabia. Not really that impressive.

And if you don't like the example of Josephus (for whom we have WAY better evidence than we have for Jesus), how about Pilate? We have writings about him by people who knew him, who we can NAME (Tacitus? Josephus? Philo?). We have a contemporary inscription, in his own language, that includes his NAME. But hey, none of that can stand up to a bunch of anonymous gospels written decades after the fact, who knows where, in another language, copies of which were not discovered until written centuries later, which we know are filled with errors and contradictions. You got me there.

Could it be that it is because whichever bibles they get their hands on tell the same story? Except for some problems of translation across 2 ancient languages? Could it be because Egyptian kings were in the habit of painting the best image of their results in war, representing that they won even when they lost? And therefore a matter of trust arises? Could it be because even where uncertainties arise they perversely authenticate the record because that is exactly what you would expect from records spanning ages past? Or in the case of the Gospels, the kind of discrepancies you would expect in eyewitness accounts?

The historical Jesus is very easy to find. Just read the Gospel of John in the King James Bible. Maranatha!

Blomberg says that the non-biblical documents are there to support that (0:05:17), and quotes Van Voorst as been decisive to this conclusion. I would really love to have this book (probably will buy it), cuz I just read a review from it and the reviewer (Allen Kerkeslager) says nothing about non-biblical documents being decisive. I want to read it myself cuz it appears that Blomberg has only read the introduction... let me quote the review

Jesus never existed. The gospels state that people thought Jesus was the ressurected John the Baptist. So, the gospel writers had to made an excuse for the existence of this character, Jesus.
The apostle Peter gave this testimony: “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). However, we have many names for Christ: Jesus, Iesus, Iesous, Yeshua, Isa, and not to mention the pronunciation “Hey-zeus.” So is the name based on God’s revelation or on the linguistics of mankind? So which one is the revealed name from Heaven? Halleluyah is universally known throughout the world, and yet few seem to know what it actually means. Hallelu, means Praise, and YAH is the name which is above every name. So Halleluyah means “Praise YAH.” YAH means “I AM” in Hebrew. YAH is found in Strong’s Dictionary of Bible Words # 3050. Where did the name YAH come from? Moses asked God for His name: “Then Moses said to God, “Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?” And God said to Moses, (“HAYAH ASHAR HAYAH) “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM {YAH} has sent me to you.’ Moreover God said to Moses, ‘Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. The name Jesus has only existed in its present form since the 17th century. Reject the revealed name YAHSHUA, the one name by which we must be saved, and stand before the judgment throne condemned.
It's sad that we expect the Christians to follow the evidence when it comes to evolution and the age of the Earth, but some of us can't do the same when it comes to the historical Jesus.

I have a question. If we can reconstruct 98% of the New Testament with reasonable accuracy why is it that scholars keep fighting about all sorts of things not only peripheral but huge as well like whether or not the Gospel of Luke teaches the doctrine of atonement? The difference between whether or not it teaches it lies in which of the variants in the manuscripts you decides to use. Why is it that some years ago a scholar make a Bible that suppose to be the most accurate and then he has to revise it again and then the two versions were only 70% similar?

Sure, but the entire Lewis quote challenges us to believe because Lewis knows what's best for us - not because we individually feel that it's true. That's both against principles of reason and a genuine self-affirmed sense of faith. Lewis wants it both ways and ends up with neither.
and many believers would say this is lukewarmness, which would be a sign of a heart that is not completely faithful. I'm not surprised by his tone or statement. I think he is displaying that he is completely sold out, nothing more and nothing less, a true believer. I guess you just have to take it or leave it.

It's all in how the evidence is viewed. Even though we have Marine life Fossils buried on and across every continent along with land dwelling wildlife in sediment layers fully articulated the evutiondt say there is no evindence of a global flood. 14 whale fossils in a desert in Perue along with dinasour fossils all fully articulated the scoffers say it was all local floods there s no way the whole world could have been covered by water but then say don't you know all land was under water at one time. Duh, yeah it was called the great flood when the water ran off the valley's sand down and the mountains rose up. Vent layers of sediment rock without a Crack or stretchers of any kind and fossils in some of those bent layers but deniers say ths was subjected to extremely high temperatures when the earth was forming. No not with fossils in them and fossilisation only occurs when something is buried rapidy in wet conditions and t doesn't take millions of years we found a fossilized cowboy boot in Texas among many other things. .

Pliny, Joshephus Flavius & Dead Sea Scrolls never mentioned, Jesus of Nazareth, Crucifixion or Ascension. Fortunately, the DSS were written at the same time & place where Gospel Jesus was supposed to have lived, preached & crucified.

Jesus was first the Cosmos, or universe. Jesus was the cosmic being. It was lonely for Eons. Then he turned in on himself to view what was inside himself. That is when he began speaking with Nebula and galaxies, then taking a closer look, started speaking with planets and stars. Then a closer look at life forms on planets, and a closer look to atomic life and sub-atomic life. Then exploring all the galaxies and planets and stars speaking with every level of life. Taking on many forms of life. Travelling across the cosmos planet to planet taking on new forms and creating new shapes and figures. Until 2024 years ago landing on Earth by spaceship and walking the Earth for the next 2024 years. After descending from the cosmos, the largest form of life, to the second lowest form of life, just above sub-atomic life, human. Jesus still walks the Earth, just goes by a different name. Jesus existed as a celestial being for a time, but there were few celestial beings in existence. It was lonely even as a celestial being. Jesus didn't start the ministry, David did, the buddhist monks, the Jewish and the muslims did. Jesus just spoke, and taught, and learned, and painted and performed music, and built buildings and furniture and trinkets and gadgets and stuffed animals and wrote and travelled and made food recipes, and drew. All of the bible was writen by David and by James, hense the King David Bible and the King James Bible. The Bibles were spoken by a few people, mostly John, also known as Jesus, given many different names in the bible, such as Genesis, Exodus, Michael, Luke, Jonathan, Matthew. Most of the names in the bible were names given to Jesus. There were a couple of other people, such as Moses, David, and James. Most of the books Jesus wrote himself, were medical textbooks, poetry, story books, botany books, books on newly identified animals with names, discription and pictures, Psychology books and instruction manuels. The biggest miracle about Jesus is that he was blued white guy in the Middle East.
Here are a few facts your church will NEVER tell you :
1. No eye witnesses record anything of Jesus.
2. The Gospels are anonymous. The names of the Gospels were added later by tradition not by fact
3. The Gospels were originally written in Greek . The followers of Jesus were mostly illiterate Aramaic speaking peasants
4. Jesus is not mentioned by any Roman or Greek politician, philosopher or Poet until 112AD , Pliny the younger . And even then he doesn't call him Jesus he simply refers to him as chrestos in passing
5. There is no historical evidence which Jesus left over to give evidence of his miracles . Eg the saints raising from their
graves , the sun darkening, the slaughter of the innocents , the feeding of the 5000 , the feeding of the 4000.
No scribe mentions this AT ALL. And there were plenty of scribes and scholars around to record this eg Philo of Alexandria.

Greek was a common language in the time of Jesus and there is no reason to assume that Jesus couldn;t speak Greek or that the Disciples couldn't speak Greek. Actually, the shorter versions are usually honest mistakes of copying scribes. An example is the ending of the Lord's Prayer, which was found in many ancient manuscripts. Some manuscripts included Kingdom, power, glory ending. Some didn't, but the oldest copy in the Dideche has the long ending. It seems some copyists skipped the line accidentally, as everybody does today. Leaving out words and even whole sentences happens, which is why there are corrections in copied manuscripts, often with margin notes.

Why do so many people suck their teeth with an annoying noise that sounds like a kiss before starting a new sentence? The office of Rabbi didn't exist until after Jesus' time. During his life, rabbi was simply used as its literal meaning: teacher.

In the one question about Erhman, this speakers accurately describes Bart's position that 97 percent or more of the original scripture can be reconstructed.

Whether his biological dad was Joseph or whether maria secretly sneaked a third party into their betrothed marriage is nobody's business but theirs!!....... God flooded and destroyed every living thing (almost) on the surface of the earth because extraterrestrial beings caused human women to get pregnant giving birth to nephillims who did terribly and horribly hideous things on earth, why would he (an omniscient extraterrestrial being himself) turn round and cause a human woman to get pregnant? I would say that since Jesus proclaimed to the Pharisees that he had the power to forgive sins, he most definitely saw himself as equal with God; that was one of the biggest things that led to the crucifiction. The religious leadership called him a blasphemer because he claimed that God had given him authority over Heaven and Earth. I don't think there is any question that Jesus believed he was divine. All that remains is if a person chooses to believe it is as truth or delusion.
Same could be said of Harry Potter. Mortal or sorcerer? Choose.
There is no doubt that it is the romans that crucified jesus. The romans wouldn't be interested and wouldn't care if those judaists were just having debate among themselves on that busy overcrowded festival day.. The jesus dude got real pissed, l (probably he was loosing the debate) lost his temper, started causing disturbance and commotion, started to raise his voice and shout at other people, got violent, destroying public and private property. That right there would call for a sharp, merciless and swift reaction from the authorities.

I kind of say that too. Read and apply logic. Ehrman has some good stuff, but when he gets to the historical Jesus belief, I found better scholars.

The gospels state that people living in the time of Jesus never been aware that Jesus was a NEW person. They thought Jesus was some resurrected prophet.

Of course, having places correct doesn't mean someone existed, etc, but according to archaeological conclusions, we have more on Jesus than most figures of ancient history. Even Ehrman like most scholars admit He existed! The ONLY question was Divinity. The Jews record His miracles as sorcery. Read ALL the critics that blast Ehrman out of the water with his weak leaps of conclusions, nit-picking, & blockage of deductive reasoning, etc. Try reading materials other than the new age garbage please.

Just a thought....What if we took a look OUTSIDE of the Biblical Scripture to "verify it?" I mean really if I applied to work for a company and needed my past to be verified they would NOT rely on MY word that I was a great guy...right? Of course not. There is over 24,000 texts of the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus and u still get ppl who claim the Gospels r not reliable. You want some facts, there is more written evidence of Jesus then all the ancient historical figures in history combined, and u say the Bible is not a reliable historical text. You can't prove a text with the same text. Nothing outside you sacred text proves Jesus or Paul for that matter existed.
