I’m not a 28mm guy but I have been shooting the new 35mm f1.5 for most of last year and it’s a dream. I tested both the aluminum and brass versions and landed on the lighter aluminum for my M5. If the 35mm is any indicator for the 28mm than it’s gonna be a banger. These current Voigtländers are absolutely fantastic. They come with all the benefits of modern glass, without any of the drawbacks. They’re technically very good without being clinically, sharp enough to shoot wide open while still giving an ever so slight glow to the image, properly sharp stopped down a stop or so, no onion rings in the bokeh or super crazy micro congrats that cuts though faces, and the color reproduction from those coatings is Leica level. I’ve been incredibly happy with my 35mm and the 21mm f1.4 Nokton. And I have the slightly older 50mm f1.5 with the ten aperture blades, which is really great too. They really remind me of the best lenses from the pre aspherical, pre computerized designs area. Which is exactly what I want.
Glad to see 28mm getting more love recently, looks like Voigtlander hit a home run with this one so far design wise. Look forward in seeing the image samples!
I use the Voightlander 28 F2 ultron and that lens kicks ass. Looking forward to your review on this one. I usually use the 28 and the voightlander 50mm F2 APO.
Can't wait to see your full review with real samples. My kit for the m11 is basically the 28 Ultron II, which is fantastic, and the 50 APO lanthar that you know well. I was really waiting Cosina to release their version of the 28 Summilux. Can't wait to see how it compares versus the 28 Summicron, 35 Distagon and 28 Ultron II. Cheers ! :)
First to show us something with this new gem. Thank you! The size and price fill 28mm gap in the 28mm market I have been hoping to see closed for years. Looks like this is the one!
Great to see another video from you Benj! Feel like this release also clarifies the questions surrounding the release of the 28mm f2.8 versions. You buy this AND the f2.8 if you’re a 28 shooter and want a great all round kit no matter the light, the f2 version (which is a little smaller the this f1.5) if you’re not in need of the bigger size/ aperture. Looking forward for your review of this! As always; your videos is much appreciated! Great work and content, Thanks!
Matches perfectly with its 35 f1,5 counterpart. I also use the Ultron f2.0 that is a little dark and has slight colour shift toward green, yet is very sharp, we'll see thanks for the heads up did not see this coming
Such a nitpicky thing, but I wish CV would eliminate the chrome nose ring on all these lenses. Or at least make a little black beauty ring to cover the nose with. Love seeing a fast 28 from CV, though!
Really excited for this one. Voigtlander is making some great lenses. Curious for your comparison between this one and the 2.0 voigtlander. I had the 2.0 voigtlander but the paint wore off too easily on the barrel, it became hard to see the markings, had to sell it... I love that there's a Matte black finish here. I need to pick up a 28mm again for my setup and hoping this will be the one... Mostly a 35/50mm guy but I love a 28mm for across the table shots at dinner and for pairing with a 50mm when out and about.
Feels like the merging of Voigt and Zeiss, being both under Cosina, as @SeanCookWeddings and I have talked about, which is really exciting. Very excited about this lens, like you said so few options for 28s under f/2 and bargain priced/not massive. Physically looks fantastic too. Can’t wait to see sample images from the final release!
I’ll most likely own this lens this year. If not this one the Voigtlander 28mm f/2.0 version ii . But wanting the speed for what I do . Probably will own both someday .
Very pleased with this dimorphic weight strategy. The Voigtlaender-built Zeiss Ikon from ~2006 had a rangefinder with 0.5m coupling. They need to make a digital version ASAP; perhaps team with Fuji or Sigma.
I cannot wait for the full review on this. But also, Voigtlander needs to be learning from Thypoch, which is a brand new lens manufacturer. There absolutely should be a focusing detent when you go past 0.7m focusing. If Thypoch can do it, Voigtlander can too.
I was very tempted to get the Thypoch 28mm f1.4 when Voigtlaender announced theirs, now I will wait for someone to compare both before I decide which one to get.
@@benjhaisch I think Samuel has one already, he teased it with a UA-cam shorts on his channel. I will hold a purchasing decision until I have seen a comparison of two production copies.
@thedarkslide yeah they were going to send me one but asked me not to test it on Leica M. Not sure if he got something else but it seems like there is something to finish up with the rangefinder specifically.
Excited for this one. I used the 28 ultron f2 for a couple years and the only thing that was missing was an extra stop of light. This 1.4 + crop modes basically gives you a 35 f2 in your back pocket. Spicy.
I'd love to know how it renders for the 60mp.... I'm looking at getting this for the A7CR (especially since there are no E-mount 28mm's besides the old F2 AF lens). Great video as always!
With that lens design 2A lenses and 2 abnormal very low dispersion lenses might be close to APO performance. Interesting for CA and edge to edge sharpness. Also interesting to see how it compares with the new 28 f1.4 Thypoc Simara- which has the close focus detente and also a clickless aperture setting and a dynamic DOF scale. Lots of cool fast tiny 28’s to choose between this year in the Leicaverse.
Great initial look… was looking out for this lens…. Have a Ricoh 28mm ltm as my main lens but sometimes 2.8 is a bit limiting…. With this lens it would be more like the Leica Q
This looks like a promising lens for sure. I just wish they'd make that chrome ring on the top of the lens black. It's nitpicky but I own 4 Voigtlander lenses and they all have it.
What's the catch with Voit lenses? They fit a 1.5 into a tiny package, which leica hasn't and it's less expensive than a comparable leica lens. Curious where's the trade off is in your opinion, if there even is one.
Feels like the Leica stuff often has that 5% extra *magic* at times, often feeling that in the focus transitions and contrast between in/out of focus elements
@@benjhaischwith Leica you get fewer aperture blades fewer aspherical elements no abnormal low dispersion lenses. You do get a bit more halation and hard to get clean sun stars. The blotchy halation to me is not necessarily a good thing for micro contrast or contrast in general. I have the 35mm f1.5 and it’s a great lens. Currently, if I want to go out to shoot 28mm, I’ll take my Q2 but I’m thinking of getting a 28mm for my M11 but this looks too big. I’m drawn towards the 28mm Color Skopar instead. Much slower lens I know but any idea how they compare?

thanks for sharing! Always great content. I could use your savvy. I'll be purchasing a Leica MP soon and looking for a 35mm lens, either 1.4 or f/2. I'm looking for something sharp all around with little distortion. So far I've narrowed it down to either a Voigtlander Lanthar f/2 APO, or a Voigtlander Nokton f1.2 series III. Whats your opinion on this two? I'm open to something similar with Zeiss as well. Thanks in advance for your help
Product agreement of a first impressions video. There are limitations that companies give content creators, and yet they expect them to deliver enough information to help sell that product.
Maybe Voigtlander could do a better implementation of the detent at 0.7m, but I didn't like the detent on the 35 Lux FLE II - when trying to focus right near 0.7m, focus feel tends to get jumpy as if it wants to snap into the detent.
definitely seems like a good bang for your buck, but can already tell it doesn't have that leica charm. Tried to convince myself for years with voigtlander and zeiss lenses. sooner or later the tradeoffs catch up to you. just my 2 cents from my personal experience.
