Good Children make bad adults. Childhood best friends Joe Hegyes and Andrew Muscarella dive into their shared history of anxiety, food courts, wigs, and trying their best to do everything right as adolescent closeted queer kids growing up on the south shore of Long Island. With sound bites from over two decades of archival footage, you'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll grow up all over again alongside these Good Children.
i can totally see 17 yr old andrew being the one to get a marine to open up about his feelings and emotions
i’m actually cracking up in my car outside of my midwest cosmetology school on my lunch break. “boys state is run by the marines?” looks at camera “boys state is run by the marines?!?????”
boys state is run by the marines.
Andrew is one of our strongest soldiers and the best president we have ever had
Andrew reciting Toby Keith from memory is absolutely sending me
i wish y’all could find someone who was at the camp with Andrew to call in and share their experience
We need Patrick stat
this episode was UNREAL
Oh my god this was a RIDE!! I went to Girls State and it was SO normal -- i could not have imagined Andrew's military camp would be Boys State! I've gotta watch that documentary!
my girls state was at the same time on the same campus as boys state and we would always get a kick out of seeing them marching or doing push-ups!! aside from mentioning ALA programming it had nothing military related - we just ran our government and made s’mores lol
Andrew, you shined this episode! you're hilarious
it’s giving the spongebob episode where they think they are going to camp and they end up on a prison boat lmaoo
This is one of the best episodes! I was cracking up and loving the story Andrew! Thank you for your service 🫡
I'm usually an audio listener and haven't watched an episode on youtube in awhile.... oh my god the visuals make everything so much funnier
babes i’m not even kidding. there was this guy i went to high school with and he went to boys state AND WAS IN THE DOCUMENTARY. i was gagged. i did a podcast ep with him sometime in high school where a few kids talked about politics and society and stuff. girlllllllllllll it was genuinely scary because how do you even begin to tell someone that the nationalist ideas they have are… literally bad?? like there’s no other way of putting it HAHAHA
The vulnerability Andrew wow I’m so proud I could not have imagined!!!! ❤❤❤
I have quite literally watched this episode 5 times…and haven’t regretted a single one
Fellow girl stater here!! Louisiana Girl State was def sorority boot camp and had cult vibes when I look back now. No marines present, but we had to sing for our food, chant any time we were walking, and sing stupid songs any time we saw boy state walking by. The grand finale of boy/girl state week was a dance we both attended and the DRAMA of the evening was incredible. Love this podcast and I laughed so hard this whole episode!! Love yall!! ✌
Andrew continuing to surprise us and impress us!
you never know what he's gonna say next
This episode was amazing- please make this into a movie
I need a true crime style documentary reimagining of this story called “Red White and Blue are the new Rainbow”
the only thing that’s keeping me going today after an awful day at work 😅❤
besides how much I cackled at this one I think we all might be skipping over the most important part of this episode, which is truly how the looks you both are wearing in this are SO good!!
love uuuu
This is possibly one of THE best episodes ever!!! A masterpiece!!!!!
omfg it just kept getting crazier and crazierrrrr. joes reactions were cracking me up too
i’m still stuck on Andrew coming back & acting like nothing happened bc baby i’d be telling EVERYONE about the horrors I went through, you could’ve gotten even more attention Andrew!!!🤣💓
it's SICK!!!!
The editing on this is so funny! I love the tone of this episode 😂
thank youuu
Please continue the stock videos, they make me laugh so much when they are sprinkled in!
i watch this at least once per week, incredible episode.
i remember when my highschool boyfriend went to boys state i truly felt like my husband was going off to join the war and i was waiting for him to come home w a letter (he never wrote me one)
LOL
i laughed up my lunch while watching this. thank you for making my day
Andrew weeping through Toby Keith had me gasping for air 😂😂 Also his desperate text for help, and everyone being like “HAHAHA” 🤣🤣🤣
as someone who was in rotc as a fat emo girl, this was my favorite listen so far
I’m so happy I randomly stumbled upon this old episode! Andrew you’re such an incredible story teller and I can’t believe the camp was only 7 days it literally felt like it was the whole summer 🤣
I watch this video once every few months and just die laughing. This whole story is perfection
I tried to write a review on Spotify and it said I wasn’t allowed to without listening to the show. Little do they know I’ve watched every Patreon and podcast episode on UA-cam.
Update: listened to a minute and a half of an episode and checked back and it let me review
GOD BLESS
OMGGGGG
I’m doing my homework and making sure I subscribe across all platforms. This episode absolutely cracked me up. The trauma and how you told no one ?!? I could never lmao props to you
Also whoever edits your episodes kudos cause the dramatic music in this kept me going 😂😂😂
THANK YOU!!!!
ALSO thank you (it's joe)
I loved Boys State, & mine was run similar to yours. Looking back, it was definitely a bit culty. I think Warren Jeffs was our floor's drill sargeant.
THE WAY I identify with every single sentence of this. From, a former Oklahoma Boys State ‘chief of police’
NOTTTT CHIEF OF POLICE
Also, they literally play made in America by Toby Keith in Air Force boot camp ….. I salute you Andrew 🥹
“Obviously, I do have a presence sometimes that I can allow people to open up to me” is such Taurus energy 🫶🏽
12:48 breaking the fourth wall simultaneously 😭😭
lololol
the editing of these just keeps getting better!!
This is the best episode of any podcast ever
I went to Maryland Boys State in 1994 (yes, I’m old). At that time, it was like what is described in the video. Held at the Naval Academy in Annapolis. Marines were assigned to each “city,” and midshipmen from USNA were also involved. Marching, PT, yelling, saluting, etc. It was gung-ho. They still did the government stuff, too. I honestly thought all Boys State programs were like that until I just watched the documentary and saw that they aren’t. I’m not sure Maryland is anymore, either, to be fair. We had a bunch of old WW2 vets from the Legion in charge, too. I’m sure they’ve all passed on given that it was 30 years ago. Maybe the younger crowd of vets in the AL aren’t as keen as making it so gung-ho (I think each state gets to set its own rules for how it operates). I have fond memories of the program, to be fair.
getting to this episode now that you’re AT 10k is amazing 💅 so proud
i am so sorry andrew i am audibly chuckling rn
I had a rough day thank you so much for a delightful video that had me continually laughing 🥲
love that ur at 10k rn & it's the end of july,, slay~
This is one of my favorite episodes ICONIC

i think dads threatening to send their fem sons to military camp is universal, but i CANNOT imagine actually going omggggg
This is SO funny oh my god I was laughing the entire episode we need more Diane sawyer esque eps

GREAT Episode!🚌🕷🛏👟📝🎶📯🫂
this editing is 100000000 / 10
tyyyy
The fits are slaying this episode
For my Boy’s State experience we stayed at a LITERAL army base! Anywho I didn’t run for Governor but I did screw over one of the candidates and got the winner elected. I felt like I was on Survivor or Big Brother or something
NOT that
this is so hilarious, I went to girls state in massachusetts and it had NOTHING TO do with the military, I would have DIED!!!!!!! ur so brave
I JUST FELL TO MY KNEES SEEING THIS
I was invited to go to Girls State having absolutely no idea what it was. I even sold my tickets to the Formation World Tour to go… I regret it to this day 😭
I also went to a military high school to build my resume. I ended up transferring because I hatedddd it. Overachievers in solidarity 😢
I know I'm late to this but I'm from Massachusetts and my high school boyfriend went to Boy State. It was basically what Andrew THOUGHT he was getting into -- socializing, networking, campaigning, etc. tbh they're probably military grooming NY boys bc New Yorkers are a different BREED.
The way this could be a Netflix limited series…
Andrew 100% would have been one of the best cheerleaders in the nation and I know it in my heart
presenting: Andrew Muscarella as Hillary Duff
Not suny morrisville I’m near there 😂
Watching this on 4th of July❤❤❤
red white and blue is the new rainbow 17:07
I went to girls state. You would have thrived we sang Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger” instead of Toby Keith
HELP. I WENT TO VA GIRLS STATE AND MY BROTHER WENT TO VA BOYS STATE AND SELECTED FOR BOYS N A T I O N AND MET OBAMA FOR NO REASON i was the sheriff of my town OMGGFGG
NOTTTT BOYS NATION
Diane Sawyer episode for sureeee. Best one yet
Andrew crying after Made in America is so real like REAL PEOPLE LISTEN TO THAT MUSIC? 😭

AH stop I immediately said those overalls are so cuties!
Gimme dat, I’m joking! Iiiim jokin
1000/10 episode
(pretend this is Andrew) hahahahahahaha that shot was amazing
*music heightens*
“I do believe it was
fat gay camp..”
“it was. it was”
ironing our clothes until they were practically glass to pass inspection
The dramatic music like this is a documentary about a murderer is so good I love it
I was a closeted lesbian who went to girls state. I remember raising a brow when we had a whole day dedicated to flag etiquette 🤨
this was laugh out loud funny
Patrick x Andrew
Literally like. New ship unlocked. They’re trauma bonded.
Literally all I wanted was to get into georgetown too but I think it was only because of college road trip
valid
I went to boy state in California- idk if I went to a fake boys state because it was more academic than physical and no song unless I blocked it out. It was not the best.
u guys i want to be a florida ambassador of good children...
Let’s have good children county’s lol
omg...
“The time Andrew was kidnapped and taken to military gay conversion fat camp”
The editing has me cackling
cadet kelly core
not the mailbox POV
Mr. President 🫡
HE. QUIT. ON. US.
my obsession with yall is unreal
I was a girls state victim who also wanted to be president of the US 🫶🏻 so this ep was truly everything to me
