🤔 Does living with your parents make you a loser?

  • When most of us turn 18, we move out of our parent’s homes and never look back. We even look down on our friends who stay behind and continue to live with their folks.
But by doing so, WE end up paying a fortune in rent every year, whereas the friends who stay behind get to save more and can actually afford to buy a home in a few years.
In fact, in other countries, the cost of rent vs their wages is much higher than it is in the US and it’s actually common for young adults to continue living with their parents until they get married.
And when they move out, it’s usually after buying their first home.
So what do you think... does living with your parents make you a loser or is it a wise financial decision?

I Bought a home at 21 ( in 2018 ) continued to live at my parents for another five years. Truly a “ boring & frugal “ lifestyle will allow you to be financially abundant. I skipped out on a lot of clubbing and drinking and it paid off. The friends who partied all their 20’s are now struggling to get by.

It is great to hear! I lived the same way my whole life. I like living frugally honestly. I am staying at home when I graduate to save and invest most of my income as soon as I graduate and start working so it is good to hear someone went through a similar process and is doing great.

I am living with my parents after graduation. I am working and would save and invest most of it. I lived a frugal lifestyle my whole life and I can definitely do it as an adult. I don't waste my money but I do treat myself on occasion but with moderation. I only have a problem with people living at home when they do not do anything productive with it.

Doesn’t make you a loser, it makes you a user. Seems to be a common theme today, mooching off your parents. That’s hardly a pro tip.

While I agree to a point, pls be very careful with this advice. It depends on your parents or the family you stay with. I would recommended other family members you have a good repoire with. I had 3 long term stints with my parents and I was never able to save any money. I will say it has hurt me in all parts of my life especially financially. Please be sure that your parents/family umderstand boundaries and that you are an Adult. Always be respectful but do not let anyone into your decisions. Please be sure you have adequate transportation. If your parents are retired, stay out of their house as much as possible. Also, please be careful of them putting their trauma and fear on to you. Also, have a clear exit plan and know the signs of when you are wearing out your welcome and when they are crossing your boundaries. It depends on your parents. Please be cautious of staying with them too long it can be a detriment depending on your relationship with your parents.

You’re a loser if you live with your parents for 10 years not paying rent and no bills and have no money saved because you don’t work FT and throw your money away on junk and video games.
    It happens.
