I remember hearing this song for the first time over 40 years ago when I bought the Welcome to the Club LP. I had thought Ian Hunter was just another cool rocker. I realized at that moment there was much more. What a beautiful, timeless song.
I've lived my entire life as a fan of Rock and Roll. But I never heard this song until I found it this year on UA-cam. Tears are streaming and I'm sad that I've lived my life without knowing this gem.
Have you seen the whole show? ua-cam.com/video/bNOD17bBrSg/v-deo.html After several such sad and heartfelt songs he played Just another Night and we gotta get out a this place. Just great.
Never too late. Please investigate Ian/Mott The Hoople further. He is probably THE unsung songwriter of a generation. New album out April 21, 2023 at the age of 83. It is a crime he is not a rock hall of famer.
I love Mick Ronson as lead guitarist. He has that kind of unique style of playing instruments. Thanks Mick. I love Ian Hunter too. He too has that unique style of singing. That's the kind of style I'm longing for. I always keep repeating hearing the record and never to get tired listening to it. Thanks Ian.
With out a doubt one of Ian Hunter &Mott The Hooples best, to see Mich Ronson playing mandolin in this vidio just shows the artist &musician Mich was & the chemistry he& Ian had. RIP Mr. Ronson, peace to all
God.......I loved Mick Robson and and I miss the decades of seeing him perform........Music absolutely saved my life and always picked me up at my lowest.....
Mick and Ian brothers in arms....god rest your soul Mick Ronson one of the all time great musicians. Will never forget him....yes he was one of the greatest.
Well said. I had the pleasure of seeing both at the old Glasgow Apollo in the 70's. Hunter is a great songwriter and Mick is simply the best guitarist I have ever seen and I've seen many.
The year I graduated, talking about being at the right place at the right time. we were lucky enough not to take it for granite, with this music you were never alone.
Still baffles me why Mick Ronson was never really recognised for his musicianship. The guy did some incredible and amazing stuff over the years. Sadly missed.
The lyrics, like Just Another Night and Life After Death, etc. and I Wish I Was Your Mother, we feel them in our soul. We could listen to Mick Ronson’s mandolin on this song forever
Mott the Hoople were everyman's band to be sure yet pioneering and iconic at the same time. To be exposed to them and the album Mott in particular was a rite of passage. They gave back everything they got 110%
Defining album for me growing up as a 16yo in Melbourne circa 1973. Haven't heard many better albums in my 60 years and this song is killer. So beautiful.
Honest, unique in style and approach, the very definition of cool but without the trappings of pretentiousness, egotism and conceit. Mott told such great stories paired with musical swagger that drew you in magnetically. I had the honor of playing this song years ago and it never failed to win the affection of even the hardest rock and roll hearts in an audience. It's a gem in the crown of an album everybody should own.
+chris gordon Well said Chris. Its one of those records where most of us remember where we were in life the first time we heard it. Mott the Hopple and Mott are what helped define essential rock in the 70s. This record just doesn't get tired.
Weather with Mott or as a solo artist. Hunter makes you laugh cry and go through every emotion in existance. This was one of his best songs. The album verision is prue gold.
wow what can any one say about Mick Ronson, arranged &produced Bowie's the man who sold the world, Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust&Aladdin in saine. Mott The Hoople, all the young dudes, produced many Ian Hunter LPs + Mick's Ronson had 2 or 3 solo LPS &played in Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Review, an in credible musician. never got his do. that's all fine&good but us as rock&roll fans knew what talent Mick was. RIP, peace
I saw Ian Hunter with the Rant Band Friday night, May 12th, 2017. They played this song after wishing everyone happy Mother's Day. It was a great show all around.
I have the original Mott album , one of my faves form the 70's Oh I had lots of faves too many to count! I can play bass to this but wish I could play guitar to it!

It is an interesting version of one of my favorite Mott songs . FWIW......The mandolin on the studio version sounds like it was probably played on an electronic keyboard that had mandolin sound .....and played by Morgan Fisher..
Fantastic song and dip ack into it about once every six months and reminds me of old friends back in those days ,dealing with cancer now and relates somehow ,the fight etc but no problem il be back a to enjoy ,il let you know .
this is Ian from Mott the Hoople, afterwards but i play this because of mick ronsons mandolin playing, Mich played with bowie and elton john and the greats of our era Enjoy!
He changed the lyrics up from the gitgo live, I think. I know that they're different on Welcome to the Club from what Mott had. Awesome as always to see Mick play. I love James Mastro and what he's doing today, but Mick was special. I've read that Ian's doing this one on the current tour. I'm hoping that is the case September 28 in Chicago.
Ronson was such a super side man. Lot's would pick this on the bus in the middle of the night but to have a fellow who can put his electric guitar down and play it flat top NAKED and live that well to a sold out audience....There is a fellow who is rare indeed. Put him with Ian or Bowie and his talent just goes nuts. Splendid.
Mick for me was the greatest not many like him come from yorkshire (hull) im from huddersfield .west yorkshire and shook his hand once ,a sad day when he passed on
I remember hearing this song for the first time over 40 years ago when I bought the Welcome to the Club LP. I had thought Ian Hunter was just another cool rocker. I realized at that moment there was much more. What a beautiful, timeless song.
Mick ronson you genius
I love the mandolin sound how Mick Ronson played beautifully and so simple. thanks Mick.
Check out the original, Mick Ralph’s mandolin playing is exquisite ❤
Brilliant.
I've lived my entire life as a fan of Rock and Roll. But I never heard this song until I found it this year on UA-cam. Tears are streaming and I'm sad that I've lived my life without knowing this gem.
AvalonDreaming : the most important point is that now it's discovered. Check out more early Mott stuff. Great band back in the day.
@@DavidTransformer TY, I will.

And especially check out Mick Ronson contributions to R and R. He's played on some of the best songs made by many artists.
I hate that classic rock radio played the same twenty songs over and over on repeat for my whole life, and never once touched this incredible song.
On the live 'Club' record, you can hear my long scream when they played this song :O)
After hearing this song i m allowed to commit suicide
One of the greatest songs. ❤ from the far east - The Philippines
Ian hunter and Mick Ronson were a good match. Also the guy's whoever played with the band at that time made history. Thanks......
As jazz people say, Ian and Mick together were SOMETHIN' ELSE.
Such a great composition Ian and mick,
All the hours wasted on social media, Finding this song made it worthwhile. Happiness sadness all in one place. I wish I could’ve been your mother.
Mick Ronson tearing it up on the mandolin as he did on that kicking ass Les Paul.
❤Two ✌️ masters together, rip mick 🙏
I love Mick Ronson as lead guitarist. He has that kind of unique style of playing instruments. Thanks Mick. I love Ian Hunter too. He too has that unique style of singing. That's the kind of style I'm longing for. I always keep repeating hearing the record and never to get tired listening to it. Thanks Ian.
An utterly fantastic song and performance, Ian Hunter - what a legend!
Moving, soulful track and oh so beautiful mandolin playing by Ronson.
The greatest Love song ever written!! & I might add I LOVE Mick & met him once & kissed him back in the day! XOXO
Beautiful song and heart rending mandolin by Mick Ronson, one of the greatest guitarists of all time!
... and the late Rick Parfitt
Amen brother

This song cooked me up when I was listening to it as a kid and it still gets to me more as an old fuck. Thanks

Well said. I had the pleasure of seeing both at the old Glasgow Apollo in the 70's. Hunter is a great songwriter and Mick is simply the best guitarist I have ever seen and I've seen many.
About 10 years ago Ian said to me backstage that a lot of people named their son after him, but I was the first. Made me proud.
Hauntingly beautiful. Cried many a tear to this song.
Some of my best memories form 72 right here
The year I graduated, talking about being at the right place at the right time. we were lucky enough not to take it for granite, with this music you were never alone.
Ian Hunter and Mick Ronson, always loved both of them. True artists!! Saw them back in the 70's at a smaller venue, quite wonderful.
Beautiful.
Cry every time i listen to this song.
Still baffles me why Mick Ronson was never really recognised for his musicianship. The guy did some incredible and amazing stuff over the years. Sadly missed.
Very talented player! He deserves more credit for sure ❤
Are you 2 years old…for his time in Rock Mick Ronson was considered a guitar God…..incredible composer and arranger…..grow up.
I don’t think he wanted that. Just liked playing.
He was appreciated greatly, especially with The Spiders From Mars with Bowie. Great artist!
I never knew this song existed like 2 weeks ago. I've been on a Mick Ronson kick. This is wonderful.
For those of who just hear this. Find the album. It's great. This song is even better.
So beautiful ❤️🎸
Mick Ronson = greatly talented and humbly composed. Who wouldn't want a guitarist like him in your band?
The lyrics, like Just Another Night and Life After Death, etc. and I Wish I Was Your Mother, we feel them in our soul. We could listen to Mick Ronson’s mandolin on this song forever
Do we? Why would you assume how others feel?
@@cchapman7101 Troll, have your doc to change your meds.
Wow!!! that mandolin solo by Ronson is heartbreaking....
beautiful
God this is so beautiful. I'd trade every song released in the last year for one more like this.
20 years?
@@MarkMikelVideos I agreed but then I thought of Seven Nation Army. Maybe 20 y/o, not sure.
Sooooo good . Heard this in 1976 first time as a kid. I get as an adult. Felt it as a Kid
One of the most beautiful love songs I’ve ever heard, the lyrics are absolutely brilliant
Love this song but even better when watching the legend that is Mick Ronson
Ian Hunter could make the devil cry.
He just did!
great to see Mick Ronson.
Love Ian. All American Alien Boy introduced me to him, then I did Mott. Unique.
Mick Ronson, absolute Legend!! ❤❤💔💔

Im an aussie too. Glad someone else in Oz grew up with Mott and Ian, Cheers.
Brilliant, melancholy song. Outside the box of most rock songs.
Love you for ever Ian Mick and David you will always live on and on and on Rock and Roll shall never die. And you are the reason why.
45 years later, never get tired of Ian and co.,still gives me the chills!!
DrambuieOnTheRocks - I'm still crying Lockdown 2020... and you?
When I watch this, it always makes me wonder what could have been with Ronno as Mott's guitarist. He and Ian were pure magic together!
that was then and Mick Ralphs was co writer and good guitarist
Ralph was a the right gitarist for Mott....

happy birthday ian hunter
I scream at you for sharing
'n I curse you just for caring
I hate the clothes you're wearing, they're so pretty
'n I tell to not to see me
'n I tell you not to feel me
'n I make your life a drag, it's such a pity
'n I watch your warm glow palin'
'n I watch your sparkle fadin'
As you realise you're failin', cos you're so good
Now I don't mean to upset you
But there's so much crime to get through
If only I could make it easier, then I would
Oh I wish I was your mother
I wish I'd been your father
'n then I would have seen you
Would have been you as a child
Played houses with your sisters
And wrestled with all your brothers
And then who knows
I might have felt a family for a while
It's no use me pretendin'
You give and I do the spendin'
Is there a happy ending, I don't think so
Cos even if we make it
I'll be too far out to take it
You'll have to try and shake it from my head
Oooooh I wish I was your mother
I wish I'd been your father
'n then I would have seen you
Would have been you as a child
Played houses with your sisters
And wrestled with all your brothers
And then who knows
I might have felt a family for a while
