  • Here's what I think is OK and what's kind of meh about the Yamaha P-525B. As a life-long Roland guy, why did I buy a Yamaha? What's so fantastic about this keyboard that compels me to put up with numerous other not-so-great features and quirks?

I believe most of the menu access limitations you mentioned are solvable with the use of the Smart Pianist app.

good to know - thanks. however i ain't gonna be using no smartphone or tablet in a live performance either. Nothing that takes my head out of the moment works for me. probably just me though.

follow-up: I tried the app. Could not get it to connect. Gave up; deleted it. Guess I'm too old.

Did you consider the Yamaha CK-88? It has all the buttons and knobs needed to make changes on the fly without the need for an app or going through menus. Also, for portable use its only 28.8lbs - compared to 48.5lbs for the P-525.

yes i did! I found some of the tiny metal switches on it were horrible. Bad idea, no good at all, didn't like. Also, the keys felt plasticky and fake, and the action was not as nice - nothing at all like the fabulous feel of the P-525. But i know lots of pros play it, so . . . it's probably pretty good if you're not weird like me.
