I think this video could be best described as a tribute to the real Marilyn Monroe. Not the icon or the sex symbol- but the woman (plagued with sadness) who just wanted to be loved for who she really was- not what she portrayed on the screen. As a result, I tried to use only candid photographs that capture her in a much more natural light (and not include the infamous MM poses and photoshoots).
I tried something a bit different with this video and I'm not quite sure if I actually managed to pull it off. Ever since I saw "Love, Marilyn" earlier this year, I've been wanting to make a video that utuilizes the incredible candid footage that appeared in that documentary. I came up with this idea shortly after with the intention of the candid footage and interview audio being the center piece. Again, not sure if I actually created something worth watching in this video (personally, I don't like it) but hopefully you guys enjoy it.
I am SO obsessed with Marilyn Monroe. Like, my bedroom is literally cluttered with different pieces of MM memorabilia. She is my inspiration. I just think she is such an incredible person and her struggle with depression and mental illness is something I can really relate to. Just so you know, I definitely intend to make more videos about MM in future as my obsession with her isn't going to die anytime soon :)
Those familiar with my videos know that I always try to include film recommendations for those looking to explore the works of the actors and actresses I make tributes for. That being said, I consider this to be a rather personal tribute and therefore it is less about the films of Marilyn Monroe the actress and more about the person she was inside. I will, however, give you one recommendation which is not only my personal favourite of hers but also comes the closest to representing Marilyn's true personality (as her friends have described her in the years since her passing). Based on a play written by Marilyn's then husband, Arthur Miller, "The Misfits" (1961) is a drastically different addition to her filmography- and also the most personal. Miller based the title character of Roslyn (notice the spelling) on his wife- which deeply disturbed Marilyn, who thought Miller was making fun of her. She hated the film and, subsequently, this was the last straw in the marriage of Miller and Monroe (who were separated within 10 days of the film wrapping). However, despite Marilyn's own objections to the character she portrayed, I personally think Roslyn is one of her most likable and relatable characters. Those who have read biographies on her (as I have) will no doubt see the similarities between Roslyn and Marilyn- especially when it comes to their childlike innocence and love of animals.

You really evoke the sense that the people in your videos are human. It doesn’t just feel like a “highlights reel”. It paints a bigger, all encompassing picture of who they were, who they wanted to be, and who they could have been.

Not gonna lie, my eyes teared up watching this. What a beautiful tribute to the most beautiful, precious woman to have ever lived. Hearing her voice and hearing her speak of happiness? Knowing that it ultimately eluded her...oh my heart shatters for this Angel...I pray that Marilyn found the happiness and peace in heaven that she so deserved on this earth...
Not going to lie, I struggled very hard not to cry at this. Such a beautiful and moving tribute that really did capture the real Marilyn better than any other tribute I've ever seen. I love 'Arrival of the Birds' and while it has been overused in many different ads, tv shows & tributes, hearing it paired with Marilyn makes it sound completely new and even more beautiful. I guess all I can say is thanks for such a wonderful video and it really made my day :)

I agree, most people only know the persona of "Marilyn Monroe"- the character she portrayed in films like "Gentleman Prefer Blondes" and "Some Like it Hot" (which includes her signature voice). I think if more people watched "The Misfits", they'd have a better idea of who she was really like- especially since her husband Arthur Miller wholly based the character of Roslyn on Marilyn.
