Now they just played better overall, but did not take their chances. 2 missed penalties in the 90 minute game... played with 11 against 10... and the final penalty kicks were an emberresment for the Netherlands and football all together! I mean... the local village football club would have done a better job 🤦♀️. I am Dutch myself and watched this match in 2000... still frustrated about it from time to time lol. Problem with Peruzzi was he struggled with keeping his weight in check, which meant that he was more often than not injured by the end of the Serie A season. This made him skip some international tournaments with the Azzurra.

This was so Hollands tournament to win man! I was 10 watching it and remember holland playing so good! If they had beaten Italy they would of played France in ten final who they would of beat considering they had already beat them in the group stage

The Italians were gladiators in this game. The German ref handed this game to the Dutch on sliver platte, they still couldn’t win. Italy a red card, took out Zambrotta in the first half, gave them 7 yellow cards, ignored pens in Italy’s favour. He gave TWO pens against Italy. So for almost 120 minutes Italy played a man down, beat off two pens, to win on a pen shoot out 4 to 2. It is complete shame to have lost to France in the final, even Cannavaro said they weren’t Italian enough in the final and gave the game away after last few minutes, France scored two goals.
So pity that Italy didn't win in Euro 2000, World Cup 2002 or Euro 2012. They had amazing teams full of great players and leaders. The same goes for Netherlands in 98, 00, 08 etc etc.
This match was difficult to watch for Italian fans, we were on the edge of our seats throughout, thanks to the brick wall defense of Maldini, Nesta, Cannavaro and the incredible Toldo, the Dutch couldn't score. Then Peruzzi declined the convocation as second choice, Buffon got injured in the last match before the Euro and Toldo from third became the first-choice. At that time in Italy we had plenty of choice of good players for any position on the field. And even more choice about world-class defenders and goalkeepers.

I watched the tournament as a 13 year old kid and Toldo's great performance in the tournament is still etched in my mind.

This was by far the most ridiculous loss I remember from the Dutch. How on earth did they not win this game and in the end Euro 2000!? Perhaps the expectations were just to high. Great squad with one of the best 4-3-3 formations with wingers Overmars and Zenden!
I mean they have never won something big on int. tournaments, and I think it was harder for the Italian team, playing in front of the home team with only 10 player.

Peruzzi was the best at that time, but somehow he always blew the big events by injuries. Same like Nesta
At that time the best was already Buffon.
Peruzzi was the second choice and Toldo the third.
Then Peruzzi declined the convocation as second choice, Buffon got injured in the last match before the Euro and Toldo from third became the first-choice.
At that time in Italy we had plenty of choice of good players for any position on the field. And even more choice about world-class defenders and goalkeepers.
@@mauriziopirani5917 and during that tournament they have abbiati and antonioli as 2nd and 3rd, i think abbiati was the last minute replacement, and like you said peruzzi declined to be backup keeper altho he was backup in 04 and 06. Unlucky for those who were competing with buffon.
You were right about having spoilt for choice in most positions for italy.
Peruzzi was already past his peak probably. Toldo was immense, even as a Juve fan I'd always pick him or Pagliuca to keep Italy's goal rather than Peruzzi.
Same like all Italians we are constantly plagued with injuries … now Zaniolo and Chiesa and Calafiori

he was thinking: c0mon, we can't do that to the Dutch in front of their publicum, so he made it more thrilling. I mean many Dutch played in Italy at that time.

I should've paid to watch this game back then.
As an italian I have to admit that the dutch deserved to win this match. Penalties are blind to justice ( fortunately for us at this particular occasion ).
i agree, it was a thoug match, the dutch were superior they had a very strong team, buy italia played a nicely done catenaccio.. and toldo was the hero for our team... i'm still angry how we lost the final against france... in the last minute..

those things stays with you trough out the years ... i still have that italy 90.. usa 94 ...penalty shot out losts in the memories, well at least 2006 made it up for it , let's hope for better world cup in the future
