My takeaways: technology hasn't changed too much in the department store shopping experience aside from the cash registers, older people were healthier looking as I don't see anything in terms of motorized carts, obesity, and general personal hygiene demeanor as they all seem pretty sharp and more well off. People definitely dressed nicer and looked more at peace, just more basically content generally speaking.

Many managers today don't care how employees treat customers as long as they're still doing their job efficiently and helping to keep the money rolling in. And as a retail worker of over 17 years i can tell you the general public has declined greatly over the last decade or so, especially in the last 3 years. Its uncommon to be a retail worker or food service worker for over a year without being physically assaulted by a customer. Its absolutely nuts. And verbal assault is a constant, they can say anything, even how they plan to kill you to your face, and management will do nothing. You'll get called every name in the book multiple times a day. You think being a customer is bad? Lol you are the ones with all the power. One lie to the right corporate head and you're lookin for a new job the next day. You are an inconvienve to the company because you cost them money every hour. The money is all they care about, and the customers have the money. Therefore; the customers have the power. And many of them know it and use it for fun.

Hated the troll dolls. I worked at a local department store (Schottenstein's in Columbus, Value City elsewhere) around the time of the video, and we were selling Russ Trolls (which everyone wanted) at $14.99 for the larger size. We had non-Russ brand at $12.99. This one particular loudmouth guy started screaming at my boss in Housewares, Toys and Sports, claiming he had seen our ad on TV list the Russ Trolls at $12.99. While he was loudly arguing that with her, others heard the argument and joined in, claiming the same thing.
Eventually about 20 people started running down our toy aisles, grabbing the Russ Trolls and tearing off price stickers, and it was a near-riot when my boss called head of security up there. He got them near the office and wrote their names down, ostensibly to let them know anything, but offered to show them the exact ad, which we had in the office and could show them the paper ad AND the commercial. "We don't need to see that, we know what we saw!" And all this hysteria started with one nabob trying to save two bucks off a Russ troll.

This is nice. Now so many people are rude, on their phones, you hear about them having fistfights and trampling each other for Black Friday gifts. I like the simple, calm hustle and bustle of the old days like this. Just leisurely browsing, gentle chatter, etc. Except that woman bought every Showbox. How will I get a Showbox now?

I used to breakdance in this mall in the 80s. I can almost smell the cardboard, sweaty knee pads, and Cinnabon right now. I'm gonna need to do the worm down the hallway to get this out of my system. Just praying I don't break a hip.

I'm just guessing, but overhead, cheaper to maintain, less hassle?
With an indoor mall you'd have a lot more overhead/costs. Security, cleaning, maintenance (lights, plants, fixtures, decorations) etc..

This was truly the last decade before technology took over and pretty much changed how we live. Makes me wonder what this generation will say in 30yrs like I’m saying now.
