I agree with you!!! I was born and raised on southern California and moved to Placencia 2 years ago from San Diego. I feel safer than any good day back home. I am aware of my surroundings but still, I walk to the store after dark and don't worry. and I am not young (57) and I have Parkinson's and walk with a cane, still feel safe.
I love your videos, my husband and I are making the move next year, we are just normal not rich folks who just want a simpler life. I love your down to earth honesty. Looking forward to your next video!
I agree with you, its a matter of perspective. Compared to where i came from in GA, there is very little crime outside of Belize City. I am in Corozal and bought here in 2018. I can think of a couple of robberies and in borh cases the perps were caught. I can remember a murder of a foreigner that had been at a local bar bragging about selling a property. That would be stupid to do in any country. Earlier this year there was a murder of a Belizean and the local people i spoke to seemed to think drugs were involved. Another thing to smartly stear clear of in a foreign country. Overall its very safe, but i tend not to go out much after dark. I like to be in my house with the gate closed and listen to the jungle. I came here for peace and quiet, safety, and little bureaucratic regulation or interjection into your daily life. The people are great. Warm and friendly, but there are aholes everywhere.
I lived near Corozal years ago. it is a nice area. I have friends that live a small distance out of Corozal and do farming there, they have lived in relative Peace for Decades! Usually, the biggest crime in that area is simply crime of convenience, people leaving stuff by the road and someone taking it. I have fond memories of delicious food and fun family conversations.
Yes, your point is well made. It is a matter of perspective. The people are used to a quieter more communal way of life and as things change they find ut alarming.
Love your videos. Thanks for your work. I live in Cayo for three years now. I doubt that anyone around would consider me to be rich (which i'm not). I think I'm the only white guy in San Ignacio not driving a car but riding a bicycle every day. 🚴 Never had any bad experiences or even felt unsave. I'm from Germany and life is quite different here. Reminds me of my childhood when Germany was much more peaceful, life was simpler and people where more modest. So Florida has one prison per about 150000 people. Belize has just one for the entire population of about 400000 people. And from what I read on news web sites here most shootings killings are somewhat gang related.
Really enjoyed reading your comment. Thanks for sharing your story here with us. I agree with everything said. Thanks for watching the video and commenting. Take care and it's a Beutiful place to ride a bike...😀😁😁
I agree with most of what you’re saying. As others have mentioned, crime is highest in Belize City, especially certain parts of the city. This has always been the case. There has been an uptick in gang activity outside of Belize City in recent years but this seems to be confined to a couple of villages. Like in the U.S., much of the crime is between family members and people who know each other. In such cases, copious amounts of alcohol are often involved. While crime against expats is infrequent, it does happen and often as a result of folks making unwise decisions about where they are, who they’re hanging with and what they’re consuming. Finally, you note how law enforcement is pretty good about catching criminals, however the conviction rates are generally low. Belize simply lacks the resources to effectively prosecute many criminal cases.
I say fix your home and rent it under contract to a property manager Leave and rent in different areas (include the winters) winters are fairly bad everywhere Humid hot = more wear and tear on house maintenance Go from their
Enjoyed your talking about your experience. I especially liked the wonderful trees and green area as you walked around the area. I noticed a nice hill not far in the distance as well. Any chance there is acreage for sale near that hill? I really am a little obsessed with being on the side of a hill for my residence :) Again thank you so much for sharing your experience and thoughts on Belize!
I'm not sure to be honest. It's a ranchers land that has the hills on it so I don't think it's for sale but I have seen a few hillside properties for sale off the Hummingbird Hwy. Check out the for sale by owner FB pages for land In Belize, I'm sure you will find something. Thanks for watching 😁
I know that you have a separate video about your water storage, but if you don't mind, what capacity do you have and will it suffice for your household. I will need to do something similar and wondering whether I should build a cistern. And what capacity will keep me between the rainy seasons. Thanks in advance ....I too will be off the hummingbird highway..stann creek .
@physicsteacher6633 so we have a 1200 gallon and a 300 gallon cistern that has worked just fine. Last year we didn't have gutters running to the 1200 gallon cistern but this year we installed gutters for that cistern and we have had plenty of water.... we should be OK during dry season this year.
I worked in a resort area in my hometown in Canada and they recommended female staff get security to walk them to their car at night. I've also lived in the Rocky Mountains and been turned around by armed game wardens in broad daylight because there was a grizzly in town. 😅 We have never felt unsafe in Belize or any of the other countries we've travelled and lived in. ❤
@@wendyquillan122 No it was Blue Mountain (2 hours north of Toronto). It used to be a quiet little town but now it's built up all around the ski hill. Lots of women were getting sexually harassed walking through the village at night. We either went in a group and walked each other to our cars or we had security walk us out.
It’s all perspective for sure. The sensationalised crime in other countries always makes me laugh. I lived in Ecuador for a while, same thing everyone thought I was rich, I told them “ no I’m not rich, I’m actually poor, especially in my own country” they started to believe me when they watched the “crazy gringo” catching fish by hand in the tide pools because I couldn’t afford a fishing rod😂

Say bye bye. Or worse you uh up dah jail and trust me belize jail is not like USA or Canadian or European jail. That why I built my house 🏠 out of cement with a high foundation and metal Strom shutter windows. Sure it may not look the prettier but you'll be glad when a Strom hit and it harder for people to break into your windows
Is van life a “thing” in Belize ? I live part time in my van in the UK , and I’m just wondering in remote areas such as in this video , is there any laws / rules / regulations to stop me just driving 30 yards in to the bush on the side of the road and stopping there for the night ? A couple of nights ? Even a week ? I’m just thinking out loud as that would help me find whereabouts in the country I’d like to settle eventually .
There really isn't anyone to enforce things like that here to be honest, there are lots of places and spots all over Belize to just pull over and take some time and enjoy the view...thanks for watching. 😁
@sgoredraw1455 we have seen lots of travelers from Argentina going to Alaska that pass through Belize and spen about 2 weeks here. Some of them I know were onUA-cam bit I don't remember the names but they were all in the overland van vehicles.
Should do a video about Guatemala 's claim over Belize, I think the real bigger security challenge. I'm surprised Belize has not taken that more seriously like growing the military manpower
For many years the British were the ones providing military for Belize... back then it was known as British Honduras. After they became independent, they have barely enough people to man the police or Guard forces. Just not enough interest or population to provide that service. Maybe that is why the USA paid them that big chunk of cash? who knows really?
No need for that. Belize can never fight of Guatemala. In 2 hours we are over run if they wanted to. The thing is mexico is not going to let that happen, they claim north up to the belize river. So Guatemala is going to run into the Mexico. The british can't protect belize. For them it's only a port for cocaine. That's why they're still here. Crime wise belize isn't that bad. As long as u dont interfere ur good. Yes robberies happen. And if u live in the middle of nowhere u need to sleep with one eye open. I live in the city for 9 years now have seen a couple murders a year. But where im from that isn't much better anyway.
I also heard that your best defense/security even over having weapons is Dogs. We’ve had some break ins in my area here in the states right down the road from us . I have to believe having 3 pit bulls has something to do with why nobody has come near our house. Honestly I’d prefer to have weapons and dogs because you never know but would you agree even down there dogs are a good deterrent. These dogs at worst would lick you to death but nobody else knows that. As far as anyone knows they could be dangerous, natural born killers like a lot of people think of pits, smh 🤦♀️ but anyway what’s your take on that as far as dogs for safety in Belize, or anywhere for that matter.
@googclem YES, our dogs are our first line of defense, you have to get through them to get to anything on the homestead. Almost everyone uses dogs here. Even in the states my dogs are my first line of defense. Thanks for watching and great comment...😁😁
