In Roman times some 2000 yrs ago this place was already mentioned as “Ultra Trajectum” because of the possibility to wade through the river Rhine here and there was a Roman fortress too.

Finally a good travel vlog about my town! You actually really nailed the vibe and appreciate the town correctly which is nice! Especially appreciate not saying we're a mini-Amsterdam :D Also you walked by the prettiest parts. Zwartewater is indeed one of the prettiest streets imo. The little park adjacent is maintained by volunteers from the neighbourhood in honor of the man who made it. Very sweet spot. Where you had the picknick is also one of my favorite spots. That bit of park was made recently after the highway there was demolished and they restored the Singel (the old city moat). I'm happy you found your way out of the commercial area and got to see the calmer parts of town!
Ahh many thanks! So happy you enjoyed it - we really loved Utrecht as well! Totally a different vibe than Amsterdam! That's so nice that the Netherlands (and so much of Europe!) makes such great parks out of areas that used to be roads. Hopefully our country can do the same one day! Thank you again! We really enjoyed our visit there! :)
That 'prettiest street' you found in Utrecht is actually called the "Keizersgracht" (not to be confused with the one in Amsterdam), though it connects to the Zwarte Water. It is funny that you found this small street, as even some Utrecht natives don't know about it. When you mention the Keizersgracht, they always think of the famous one in Amsterdam. I agree it is the most beautiful street in Utrecht, it is like a hidden gem :)
Looking at the map the street at that point is called Zwarte water on the north side of the canal and Keizersgracht on the opposite south side of the canal.
Great tour of Utrecht. I'm an American but I live in France and like to come up and explore new cities in Belgium and the Netherlands. I visited Arnhem for the New Years celebration and will be visiting Utrecht early next month. Day trips to Amsterdam are still fun but I think you can find more culture in the surrounding cities and countryside. I would love to visit for Koningsdag next year.
So happy you enjoyed it! After the Netherlands we visited Belgium, followed by a couple of Balkans countries! We had other travel plans, but unfortunately had to head to the land of the free (lol) for a family emergency. Not sure how long we’ll be back, but hoping to get back on the road soon. When they talk about the cycling city,,, the infrastructure is always counted in, not only the amount of people on bikes... You have to have a great bike infrastructure to support al the people cycling. Groningen, a city in the north, was also once the World's cycling city. Greetz
Oh that makes sense!! Utrecht did have really great biking paths and plenty of room for the amount of cyclists! Groningen looks beautiful too! Do you think it’s worth a visit?? Thanks for the tip on the reason behind the cycling capital!! 😃
Underneath Dom Tower, you can visit and see the remains of the Roman castellum of Traiectum (the -trecht part of Utrecht) from which the city developed. In Roman times, Utrecht was an important fordacross the Rhine river
Bicycle infrastructure in and around Utrecht has been improved an incredible lot, over the past years, and it keeps getting better and better. Goes for most of NL, really, but Utrecht does appear to stand out even in the country. Best nearby place to visit, though, if cycling is your jam, is not Utrecht, but the town of Houten. Which as a town is essentially just a suburb, but centered around pedestrians, cyclists, and well, humans, in a way that is truly inspiring. About the mid part of the Dom church, by the way: it did not collapse just out of nowhere, and it had been standing for over 300 years before it collapsed. Reason why it collapsed was a freak storm in 1674, just two years after the army of Louis XIV had plundered the city and rendered it destitute. So after the nave of the church had collapsed, there was indeed no money to rebuild it. Also, in 1672, during French occupation, the church had been re-sanctified as a Catholic church. When the occupiers left, it became Protestant again, but many people, including most Utrechters, still viewed the 1674 storm as Divine Judgement, and the people of Utrecht as worthy of God's Wrath. Leaving the city and its people overcome by confusion and depression. Consequently, it took until 1850 until the rubble was fully cleared. I am leaving out a Netflix-series worthy amount of drama that happened in the 175 years in between, here, but that's the gist of why we have a Dom Square!
hehehe you're in my city. Utrecht is awesome smaller but just as great as Amsterdam without the rush. We're more relaxed. The Dom church didn't run out of money, it was partly destroyed by a storm.
Your city is awesome!! I felt like it was almost hard to compare to Amsterdam because it is very relaxed and a totally different vibe! And thanks for the correction!! Sometimes we misread or make mistakes, especially when our information comes from a website has been translated!! I’ll see if we can add a pop up text correction on UA-cam! :)
@@IfWeGoTo the whole story is on the walls that surround the tower. You missed it by walking underneath the tower. You also missed the flower market on the Janskerkhof, where you can get the famous broodje Mario. Best deal in town for 3 euro😉

Fan fact... Miffy is called "Miffy" all over the world except for The Netherlands where it's called Nijntje (a play on the Dutch word for little rabbit "konijntje"). It used to have different names all over the world until it's creator Dick Bruna together with the English translator decided that outside of the Netherlands is would be a called by one name... Miffy (apparently after the sound rabbits sometimes make).
@@apveening I think local languages are a bit more complicalted. In Japanese (hiragana/katakana/kanji) Miffy is also not spelled as Miffy of course... which goes for all symbol based languages, Cyrillic and many more. I think it's only Roman alfabet based languages and latin is already an exception. Internationally the brandname is Miffy (in UK English/roman alfa)
Hi!! As far as we know... Alan's ancestors are primarily German and British. Brandi's ancestors are primarily Asian & European.. mostly Filipino, Swiss, British, & Irish.
That's a café, not a coffee shop. If you ever visit an actual coffee shop is when you see they offer a variety of products but coffee is their lowest priority. If you're ever in Noord Holland again, try Haarlem. It's big enough for a city but the city center has more of a village atmosphere. Don't recall being able to see Amsterdam from the top of the Domtoren, though. Possibly that's an in-joke referring to all the coffee shops in Amsterdam that can get you very high indeed. Regarding Kibbeling: never liked it that much. It's hyped up in my opinion. It tastes like sauce that accompanies it, if you put the sauce on it. From personal experience, a Lekkerbekje tastes better. It's schelvis (haddock).

The Kingdom Holland was a puppetstate of Napoleon's empire of France. Btw, so good you also visited the non touristic areas of Utrecht. Those parts are often forgotten. It was not the money, it was a storm...the dom tower is as high as a Saturn 5 rocket, there used to be a life size drawing of that rocket attached to the tower some years ago. Utrecht or in Latin Ultra Trajectum, started out as a Roman border fortress on the river Rhine, the Rhine changed course in the early middle ages, and what is left of the river is one of the city moats. And we beat the Romans long ago, so please pronounce names like Brugge as Brugge, and not as bruce or what ever, we are not French/Romans .. Bruh-Chuh with a soft CH as in loCH ness..
First of all, don't compare Utrecht with Amsterdam, this is a serious insult, for Utrecht and the Utrecht residents, Amsterdam is an open sewer, if you as a tourist want to visit the best fries shop, then go to Jolide, which you can find in the Bosboomstraat in utrecht .
Utrecht and Amsterdam are two different cultures. Utrecht I never liked. In my opinion, a city without soul and a culture I do not understand. Nonetheless there is something. But I don't know what. Mostly a town for students and young people.
For sure, everyone will think differently on it!! Utrecht is definitely for people who want a slower, more relaxed vibe. I see why Amsterdam is great for tourists and is extremely lively!
Amsterdam is the worst spot to visit visit in the Netherlands, so naturally Utrecht is better.. "Coffee shops" do NOT sell coffee, you need to go to a Café for that. There is not just one canal (more like 6) and there is so much to do and see even outside the city center. And contrary to Amsterdam, Utrecht’s authenticity never gets boring

Just try sometime these electric boats (everybody can rent) in Utrecht or Amsterdam and roam through these century old canals . It felt like drifting silently into some old painting and becoming a part of this by Dutch painters beloved old décor. Beautifull. ❤
Next time we’ll definitely have to!!! That sounds so dreamy! 🤩
I live 7 minutes walking distance from the centre of Utrecht. This video is like 'Welcome to my backyard' !
Wow!! You are so lucky to live there!!
Finally a good travel vlog about my town! You actually really nailed the vibe and appreciate the town correctly which is nice! Especially appreciate not saying we're a mini-Amsterdam :D
Also you walked by the prettiest parts.
Looks like a beautiful city!
It was so pretty!! Wish you could have been there too!!
Ohh ok!! Thank you!! 😃
It really was a gem to stumble upon! I can’t believe that some locals don’t know about it. It’s so beautiful!
Looking at the map the street at that point is called Zwarte water on the north side of the canal and Keizersgracht on the opposite south side of the canal.
I think you might also like to visit the Spoorwegmuseum (railroad museum) in Utrecht, definitely worth a visit for anybody interested in trains.
Next time we visit we will definitely look into that! We love the trains!!
Thank you for watching!! How do you like living in France?? It must be pretty cool to explore the nearby countries! Did you get to visit Utrecht yet??
awesome . have enjoyed watching it . What is next for you guys ? Moving to the land of the FREE ?
So happy you enjoyed it! After the Netherlands we visited Belgium, followed by a couple of Balkans countries!
We had other travel plans, but unfortunately had to head to the land of the free (lol) for a family emergency. Not sure how long we’ll be back, but hoping to get back on the road soon. Will probably head back to Asia when this all resolves. :)

Greetings to the Dutch people, I love the Netherlands so much, wonderful and beautiful ☺️💞🇲🇦🇳🇱💗💚💓💜
Ah awesome!! Is this the domunder exhibit or is something different?
@@IfWeGoTo It's inside Domunder
Next time we visit we’ll have to be sure to reserve ahead of time to be able to see it!
MMMmmm nice I was born there in 1954, Utrecht is such a nice comfortable town
How lucky to be from there! It’s such a beautiful, relaxing town!!
Tip .If you are in Utrecht anyway. Also visit Spakenburg. It is a small fishing village not far from Utrecht. With a UNESCO SITE HAUBER.
I wish we had known about it when we visited! It looks so cool! Thank you for the recommendation! Will definitely check it out on our next trip!! 😃
Aw man!!! Next time we visit we’ll have to check it out!! We have a few friends in Rotterdam so we’ll surely be back!!
@@littleraven28 ooooo They have to go broodje Carlo and it's better than Mario! (If you go to Carlo don't call it a broodje Mario ;)) But the flower market is pretty.
Also the story of the church is true! The butresses for the 'middenschip' where never completed so when the storm came it all came down!
Hope to one day visit this country! Would love to ice skate on the canals some day. The transition at 1:45 was really nice. Beautiful town.
I bet you will! It's super awesome, and Amsterdam is iconic!
Do the canals freeze?!
@@IfWeGoTo they do sometimes! One time i was lucky enough to go ice skating on the canals a few years ago.
There were some activities you could've done like visit the biggest arcade in the Netherlands, some musea and stuff like that. Or visit one of our local coffeeshops that is on a boat. The last place you can smoke and chill at in Utrecht 😄👍

Utrecht was definitely a charming town and I entirely understand why ya'll don't want it to become an overcrowded tourist spot! It can be a good thing in some locales, but hard on cities and those who live there if it doesn't have the proper space, facilities, and infrastructure!
Thanks again Tony! Always a pleasure to get kind comments from people like yourself! :)

Hello there, very nice movie you are doing. What kind of camera are you using?
Thank you so much!! This video was done on a canon eos R. :) If you have any more questions we're happy to answer them! :D
Didn't know the story behind the name!! Or that rabbits made noise! Thank you!! lol
@@IfWeGoTo Rabbits make noise... but only if you squeeze them a bit. hahaha
@@jurgenolivieira1878 I had no idea lol
One more exception, in Latin she is called Miffa (and yes, the books are also translated into Latin).
@@apveening I think local languages are a bit more complicalted. In Japanese (hiragana/katakana/kanji) Miffy is also not spelled as Miffy of course... which goes for all symbol based languages, Cyrillic and many more. Kibbeling is not fried herring. It is fried cod
Ah thank you for the correction! :)
Just wondering: from what area in Europe did the ancestors of both presenters came from? (Before they emigrated to the USA).
Hi!! As far as we know...
Alan's ancestors are primarily German and British.
Brandi's ancestors are primarily Asian & European.. mostly Filipino, Swiss, British, & Irish.
That's a café, not a coffee shop.
If you ever visit an actual coffee shop is when you see they offer a variety of products
but coffee is their lowest priority.
Haha yes you are right, I misspoke!! In the US we use coffee shop for everywhere that serves coffee lol!!

Utrecht is better than Amsterdam, but it isnt in Holland, but in the Netherlands. It once was the capital of the Kingdom Holland though, but for a short while. The Kingdom Holland was a puppetstate of Napoleon's empire of France. Btw, so good you also visited the non touristic areas of Utrecht. Those parts are often forgotten. Ow, what you got was a large portion of kibbeling. I think at the end of the day they wont be that nitpicking, otherwise they have to throw it away. Ow and you went to the right stand for kibbeling. There are some others at the market, but this one is the best by far.

It was not the money, it was a storm...the dom tower is as high as a Saturn 5 rocket, there used to be a life size drawing of that rocket attached to the tower some years ago.
