    Thank you for that instruction. I now know how ridiculous CARB rules are. For my pre-OBD-II car, out of tons of pre-OBD-II CARB approved catalytic converters, only few are allowed. That is totally ridiculous. If a catalytic converter does a great job reducing smog and passes all smog test, why should they say it's illegal? CARB rules are example of bureaucracy gone mad.

      its called creating a monopoly of parts backed by a non sense law that allows bigger polluters but they want to hit the regular joe with more fees just so we can go to work and keep paying taxes. I have a otherwise great cat and the referee failed it because its missing a number on the catalytic and I have no prove it was installed on 2004. I'm the 3rd owner. His conclusion was on the suspicious question of WHY it had to be changed just 3 years after 2001 car was purchased. I had this same truck pass smog 3 other times since I had it and nobody have make such a big deal just because a number is missing from the catalytic itself that was most likely eroded by use as the truck is 20+ years old. Also, California should make it harder for people to still this catalytic converters. There are only two or three companies that are allowed to sell LEGAL part numbers and the Federal authorized providers are all ILEGAL in California. This process for finding the correct catalytic for a vehicle is complicated by default with the purpose of someone making a mistake and installing the wrong part and having to pay twice as there are no documentation as who is liable and unless a customer just trust the muffler installer that he is giving him the best price for the job including parts which is already at the level of replacing an engine in some cases, that customer has no choice and freedom to look elsewhere for a better deal as is the right of every American. Again, a monopoly will care less to make these associations to find the weak links in the process allowing for all the gray areas where a customer has no chance of getting a fair deal. I am all for clean air and stuff but I believe this politically driven moves to pass state wide laws must be thoroughly tested and explained. As consumers we are paying for all of their pay checks including the governor's so I say we have the right to know and the right for options.

    I need a carb legal cat for my 95 integra. Epa cats are running for around $120-150 while the California cats are around $1200-2000. I hate this stat so damn much. And they wonder why everyone is doing illegal smogs. I am a smog inspector for 10 years in California so I didn’t come here for the info. Just to vent. Even worse is the previous owner took it off to “sound cool.”

    We’ve been using CARB on- road for years. I wish this method was more widely taught in courses for some of the newer inspectors coming out into the field. This method was shared by a State Referee with us as a legal and correct method to verify vehicles without a VECI or ECS.

    I realize this is an older video, but I am in the process of replacing my catalytic converters on my 2003 ford ranger 4.0 since mine were recently stolen. The number one question I would like to ask is, with universal/aftermarket cats, where in the exhaust do I weld them? Do they have to be installed so many inches from the flanges, so many inches from the manifolds or as long as the oxygen sensor wire reaches the aftermarket cat? Is there a minimum/maximum amount of slack needed on the oxygen sensor cable? Like, what if I weld one a bit too high and there is a bit more slack on the oxygen sensor cable? What if it was easier for me to weld the new cat in an inch or two lower but now the oxygen sensor wire is a little stretched? I watch youtube guys just weld them in where ever between flanges as long as they can screw in the oxygen sensor... Not one shop out of 9 that I contacted can/will tell me about where a universal cat should be welded in place. Hope I didn't confuse you.

    I have a 2007 Honda Accord Special Edition 2.4L. The emissions label affixed to the hood of the vehicle lists the test group of 7HMXV02.4KKC. When I look up this vehicle in the California CARB database there are 10 withdrawn EO numbers. What does a withdrawn EO number mean in this case? What would happen if I was to install the catalytic converter with a withdrawn EO number?

    • @MasterAutomotiveTraining
      @MasterAutomotiveTraining  2 роки тому +1

      When it is withdrawn means that after ceritifaction from EPA they determined CAT wasn't a good fit. You'd need to copy records to date of install of that cat, then we will check it, if it looks like an older install we'd pass it. If you install today, then it would be fail no matter what.

    Federal Emissions.... My car is a 1997 Saturn SW2 that I bought new in CT and still own. The engine family is not the ARB database. The smog ref said that many or all Fed Emissions vehicles will not be in the CA database so when selecting an aftermarket cat you go by Make, Model & Year (and # of cylinders 4, v6, v8 etc). I had been gong to Fairmount Smog Test Only for 12 years! In 2016 I failed and had to replace the cat; I chose an aftermarket since it a new OEM cat was no available. 2022 in August a different tech was working there and refused to submit the results because he could not find the engine family in the database and claimed he knew more than the smog refs so I left and dug up and printed out all the info that I saved from the smog ref. **** At the next smog shop I explained everything and brought in my paperwork but ran into a different problem: The laser etched numbers are now almost unreadable. I got under the car myself and took a picture and zoomed in and compared it to my paperwork and he could see the outline of the numbers and submitted the passing test results but what happens when the EO number can't be read? I installed the cat myself using my welder but even if a shop did it and I saved the receipt there is no way to prove that is the correct cat.

      If the cat is still the factory original, the car is California emissions certified (sticker under hood), and can pass CA smog then no need to swap. But if it fails smog then you do have to get it swapped for a CARB certified cat. Aftermarket CARB cat only applies to 2009 and newer cars as well as 1996 up OBD2 cars that require the cats to be replaced. Or get oem factory cat but most likely discontinued due to age

    TLDR - Too Long Didn't Read my comment below. Once the ** EO number is rusted and unreadable ** there is NO way to prove that is the correct cat for the car. And this is in southern CA where it almost never rains. In the rust belt the cat would be unreadable after a year of rain and snow and melting salt. Common solution is that you have to get a special card to show the SMOG tech - but this doesn't prove the cat is right for your car.

      Paul, it seems as we have the same problem. My Cat is missing a number from the metal (unreadable) and I had to appeal the test result ending at the referee program who also failed my cat due to the same issue. He said doesn't have the means to prove that the catalytic converter is approved but 1.- he knows is not the original and 2.- It was changed in 2004 based on some other information he was able to pull out. My truck is a 2001 so he questions WHY was it changed only 3 years after it was sold for the first time. Like if stilling cats is something new. It probably was stolen before I bought it but it passes smog on my ODB2 scanner. Now, I don't know what is the logic here.

    Did you know? In California, all vehicles down to 1955, must have any and all Smog Equipment installed. When they started smog checks, all vehicles had to have Closed Crankcase Ventilation and a NOX Device. Also any speed equipment must have an E.O. Number to show it is smog compliant. After Market Super Chargers have a notation, "Not for use in California on any smog controlled vehicles". Also, any engine swaps prior to 1983, you go by the year of the engine. Engine swaps after 1983, you go by the year of the car plus, the engine had to be an option for that car. This was done to stop people from swapping a BBC from a truck into a car with the BBC wasn't an option. Also running dual cats on a vehicle equipped with a single is illegal..

    • @MasterAutomotiveTraining
      @MasterAutomotiveTraining  2 роки тому +1

      In CA emission equipment is required after 1976, according to the Bureau of Automotive Repair. PCV did start early 40’s but not enforceable until 1976 for smog check purposes. With engine swaps make sure to have the state referee verify new installation and ECS label approval.
