  • For the last 15 years, Fred Vautour has worked the grounds of Boston College as a janitor. It hasn't always been glamorous, but sending his five children to the prestigious private college tuition-free made it all worth it. Steve Hartman met him, "On the Road."

I know a woman who worked as a janitor at a university, and she adopted some teenagers so they could go for free. Nobody ever questioned why she had so many kids.

@@BuddyMac69 I was wrong, she didn't legally adopt all of them, some were just her foster kids. But even if they were only staying with her as fister children, they could still attend for free under the "employee's kids attend for free" policy. The two she adopted legally were already 17 years old, so she didn't have to spend any money supporting them. I do, however, know one who got a job at the NYU cafeteria so her daughter could attend free of charge.

@@maximilianjohandson3382 Yeah... I lived in France and Germany for a while. It's not as wonderful as everyone likes to think. I experienced the healthcare system in France several times and the quality is not nearly as good as here in the US. Toward the end of my stay, I only went to private hospitals and doctors, which do cost more, but the care was totally worth it. College should not be free. I am back in the US right now, I'm going to community college right now, got a grant, don't have any debt, and will transfer to a state university. Yes, I probably will have some debt, but I expect that because it is an investment in my future that will be easy for me to pay off once I have a good income. The public education system in France is also under-impressive, especially the universities. When people don't have to pay for school, and can choose to not work and get money from the gov't each month, there is no incentive to get an education and work hard. That is something that I noticed during my time there: there was a lack of work ethic that stemmed directly from the fact that everybody was dependent upon the government. Looking back on history, when citizens have ever been dependent upon the government, that's what allows the government to easily control the people, which creates a dystopian, authoritative system. Don't buy into the stupid socialized crap, it's really not that great.

@@maximilianjohandson3382 By the way, people make the choice to go to expensive schools voluntarily, without thinking about the return value of their education. If someone goes to school for $30,000 a year and gets a useless degree in art, then yeah, they are dumb. Why not go to community college, then a public university?

Some folks are graduating from prestigious schools are working as bartenders (nothing wrong with being a bartender by the way), barely making enough money for student loans. And others graduating from community colleges making six-figures, with no student loan. It's all what you do with what you got, sensible planning, and determination. At any rate, this was a very good story. Love it.

Compared to the most “successful” people on this planet, it’s refreshing when you always find that the janitors (the failures) are the most well put together people that this grapevine of a blue ball has to offer. My mother is a janitor. Has been for i’d say 15 years now. And the wisdom, humility, generosity just oozes out of her. This guy reminded me of my mom. Always here to serve you. These are the people that should be running the countries. Straight facts.

Good for him and his family. The kids still had to earn their way in. Even bigger - no debt post graduation which is even bigger.

Janitors is one of the most important school jobs. Imagine not having someone you cleans after your mess, and doesn’t clean. It would just be terrible. So please respect your janitors because they are a normal person too.

Just as you go on and continue to disrespect him by calling him a janitor they prefer to be called custodians

NO NO NO NO NO! He hasn't taken them for $700k worth of education. The college wrote the protocols, he met the parameters of those protocols and his kids adopted his work ethic and values to live up to the agreement! Everyone is a winner, there was no free lunch to be had anywhere!

What a wonderful example of a man who loves his children. Night shift isn’t easy, and no doubt he could’ve looked for opportunities to make life easier for himself over the years. Instead, he assessed the situation and stayed put where he could provide the most for them. That took love, courage, and tenacity.
My parents never mentioned college except to say they wouldn’t be paying for it. They made no provision, and the only money “saved” for it was money I’d earned or been given by others for birthdays.
I put myself through, with support from my spouse near the end.
And my father WAS a college graduate himself!
This “just a janitor” puts him and all other similar fathers to shame.
It would’ve been an HONOR to have a father like this man.

    Hello folks,
That's a policy for most of not all colleges. Some may not include family but it does apply for the employee. For the employee, that's like getting paid to go to school.
