More than 99% of it is blood ivory today. Ivory was historically rare prior to 1900 and prized due to it's rarity, guns + poaching and killing more than 20 million African Elephants since 1900 is what flooded the markets. If you have ivory before it was banned it may be considered legal but it is still from a elephant that had it's face hacked off with machetes while it was alive, and left to slowly bleed to death over the following days. There should be no joy in owning any object made from ivory, it's especially sacrilegious to see religious objects carved from it when those people [Like Buddha] during their lives would have denounced the killing of a elephant to turn it into a trinket.
