I'll never forget sitting in a bar in Anchorage, Alaska for Super Bowl 2008 (Giants/Patriots). Tom Petty played halftime. When he played this song, the whole bar sang the choruses at the top of their lungs. It was truly magical. So, then the cover band I was in decided to do this song. Our singer could get the whole crowd singing those choruses. He would just drop out and let the crowd take over. Gives me goosebumps just thinking about it.
Back in 2001 my Dad took me to a Tom Petty and Jackson Browne concert. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen. Tom was such an iconic musician that he and the band was on stage for 5 hours and every song they played was a well known top 40 or higher hit. That's how many memorable to absolutely unforgettable songs they released. He was an absolute legend. May your body rest well and may your soul find all the excitement and adventure, all the wonder and awe, all the amazing and inspiring secrets of the universe that you're looking for. Godspeed Tom Petty.
I saw him live in 2014. I was in a field on a farm in the mountains of Virginia with people of all ages and walks of life singing at the top of our lungs. Epic night for me.
I love how he switches from “free” which is generally a good thing, to “free falling” to subvert the positive and show how his escapism is ultimately self-destructive
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, best rock band all time….Tom had over 40 hits, but the stuff you all don’t know about is his best stuff….American blues, southern rock perfection
.....Tom Petty started out as an alternative artist in the 70's with his first album, but that album was wildly successful, propelling him into the mainstream, However he maintained his unique style all throughout his career. By the time this song was released he was everywhere, so this was mainstream rock in 1989..... 🙃
Just think. Almost every song you react to I either bought the Album when it came out or heard it on the radio on release. Amazing to see people who have never heard songs find them just as Fantastic as I did when I first heard them.
I saw Tom Petty Live in concert several years ago. He is an amazing musician. His music will live on in all of us who enjoyed his music. This is my favorite songs by him.
You need this song blaring on the stereo going down the freeway going at least 80mph..preferably you're the only car on the road lol...this song fits so many things, it all kinda depends on where you are personally..."Here Comes My Girl" would be a great Tom Petty jingle
This song was a song wrote about himself and how he observed people around him which he wrote in 2 days with Jeff Lynne from( E.L.O. electric light orchestra) and wrote the song Won't back down that same day as he recorded free falling.👍🇳🇿🥝
Somebody correct me if I’m wrong, but Jeff Lynn from ELO helped with this entire album. I know he definitely helped write THIS song and “Won’t Back Down “ which is another song to react to,if you haven’t yet.
Tom & the Heartbreakers came out in the mid 70's. The song came out in the late 80s. And although the album was released as a solo album, he did record with some of the Heartbreakers. If I'm not mistaken, Jeff Lynne from ELO helped produce the album. I don't think Tom had any bad singles.
Btw this song has 2 meanings.... meaning 1 is about his guilts and regrets he had towards breaking a girls heart while also being a travel song about LA
The thing about songs is that you can interpret them any way you want. For me, this is about doing the unexpected and leaving something/someone with no idea where you're going next.
I wanna thank you guys for always correctly using the word "conversing" instead of saying "conversating". Because nobody in all of history has ever been "conversating" because that is not a word. If you have a conversation then you have been in or currently are in the act of "conversing". I've never heard either of you say it incorrectly and it may be relatively unimportant but it irritates the hell out of me when someone get it wrong. Anyway, again I thank you and I wish you good luck and godspeed my friends. Peace ✌🏻😎👍🏻
yes careless whisper is wham/george michael. also fun fact about free fallen, pimp c did a song after he got out of jail called im free which samples this
he said living Reseda i'm a badboy cause I broke her heart,,doesn't feel bad about it also the vampires Ventura blvd hiding in the dark alleys ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, lostboys?????????????????????????
This song is what I imagine to be a romantic soundtrack to any evangelical Christian American couple's lovey dovey time, who don't want to vibe to Kenny G.
I don't think he was chasing her at all. I think he bailed on someone, and was just out doing whatever he wants now, and does, but doesn't feel bad about it. Kinda reminds me of the idea in the song Free Bird. Similar mentality.
Tom spoke about this song he wrote it with ELO Jeff Lynne his producer/cowriter as a joke and it turned into a hit. He honestly says he has no idea what the song really means.
Amazing how offbeat Smokeys head movement is on every song. Is it just me or does he resemble Actor AJ Buckley ( CSI NY and Seal Team )? thanks for the good entertainment.
Tom Petty, gifted, guitarist, singer, writer, performer icon! PS there’s so many better song than this older Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers is phenomenal
Every single one of the people I know were a bit sophomoric and sang, “Cuz I’m freeeeee, free balling” Edit: just FYI, we loved/still love this man’s music, just like word play
RIP Tom Petty. One of the great storytellers in rock. Amazing how a guy from Florida could so easily depict life in Southern California.
I also liked Tom Petty in the band Traveling Wilburys with George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan.
Tom Petty one of the coolest dudes ever. Machine

Tom Petty is Classic Rock, Southern Rock, or just straight up rock and roll.

Petty was the epitome of a true rocker.Did it for the music and his fans.
I love how he switches from “free” which is generally a good thing, to “free falling” to subvert the positive and show how his escapism is ultimately self-destructive
Amazing how a song called Free Falling can raise your spirits so high.....an absolute classic.
I would def put this in the classic rock category. It is crazy that this was 1989, and most def R.I.P. Tom Petty
I cried so hard when he passed...RIP. I won the cassette on the boardwalk in NJ, listened to it over and over...whole album is awesome.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, best rock band all time….Tom had over 40 hits, but the stuff you all don’t know about is his best stuff….American blues, southern rock perfection
A deeper cut that many forget about is "Jammin" Me".....criminally underrated.
Tom Petty is the master of song hooks. Everyone of his songs has memorable hooks.

Legendary artist, awesome song!
Tom Petty was the first band I ever saw live during his Wildflowers tour. Absolute legend.
Paul Simon is the other half of Simon and Garfunkle, the ones that did the original Sound of Silence song
You need this song blaring on the stereo going down the freeway going at least 80mph..preferably you're the only car on the road lol...this song fits so many things, it all kinda depends on where you are personally..."Here Comes My Girl" would be a great Tom Petty jingle
RIP Tom Petty. Absolute legend.

This song was a song wrote about himself and how he observed people around him which he wrote in 2 days with Jeff Lynne from( E.L.O. electric light orchestra) and wrote the song Won't back down that same day as he recorded free falling.👍🇳🇿🥝
The production on this song is just perfect.
Tom Petty ; Rock · heartland rock · roots rock · country rock · Southern rock ·
Rip Tom Petty AKA "Lucky" on King of the Hill!!! 😉 He did such a great job as Lucky!
Somebody correct me if I’m wrong, but Jeff Lynn from ELO helped with this entire album. I know he definitely helped write THIS song and “Won’t Back Down “ which is another song to react to,if you haven’t yet.

Tom Petty is PURE ROCK N ROLL, PERIOD….no “alternative “ bs….American southern rock
Btw this song has 2 meanings.... meaning 1 is about his guilts and regrets he had towards breaking a girls heart while also being a travel song about LA
George Harrison and Jeff Lynne sing harmonies in the chorus
🎶🎵yea I'm free! Free ballin'!🎵🎶
For me, this song was when I would blow a spliff, and just escape the "real" world and lost myself in the world of music
George Michael did careless whisper just a little bit before he left wham. The album full moon fever was released in 1989✌️
Tom Petty has such an enormous catalog. My favs are Swingin, It's Good to be King, Louisiana Rain. Oh Lord let me shut up. There's too many 🤔
The thing about songs is that you can interpret them any way you want. For me, this is about doing the unexpected and leaving something/someone with no idea where you're going next.
There’s no actual meaning…they were silly lyrics he came up with on the spot as a joke and Jeff Lynne said, “no, that’s it….sing that”
Love you guys seriously! I am 2 years from being 50 and love all your stuff!
Welp, I'm 51 😁
I'm 48 too bro. Trash Talkers rock!!!

This is best Tom Petty song ever!
no way great song but far from his best.
I have to say this free balling. Great reaction
That's Jeff Lynne on the backing vocals. Also produced this.
Tom Petty literally the best music for long summer road trips. Probably the song is about doing Heroine with a prostitute in Hollywood.
Runnin' Down a Dream (from the same album) tops that list for me. Great driving song.
Absolutely, I got a whole Playlist of Heartbreakers, Tom's solo stuff even Chainsaw songs for cruising or camping.
I wanna thank you guys for always correctly using the word "conversing" instead of saying "conversating". Because nobody in all of history has ever been "conversating" because that is not a word. 🎶🎸 🎶🎸 🎶🎸
I use to think Tom was saying "Green Olive yeah I'm a Green Olive" instead of Free Fallin' 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆
yes careless whisper is wham/george michael. also fun fact about free fallen, pimp c did a song after he got out of jail called im free which samples this
That's right! MJK is now on the first and third weeks of the month.

This song is what I imagine to be a romantic soundtrack to any evangelical Christian American couple's lovey dovey time, who don't want to vibe to Kenny G.
Little known fact, this song's original title was Free Ballin' because Tom Petty hated wearing underwear.
You really need to check out

Have you got around to the Traveling Wilburys yet?
Otis Redding sings "Sitting at the dock of the bay"
You can hear the influence of Jeff Lynne in this and several other songs on the album. Now Tom is gone, there's only two of the Wilburys left. 😢

I don't think he was chasing her at all.
I think he bailed on someone, and was just out doing whatever he wants now, and does, but doesn't feel bad about it. Kinda reminds me of the idea in the song Free Bird. Similar mentality.
Wham was band from the uK comprised of George Michael and Andrew Ridgely.
Paul McCartney and Paul Simon are not the same people
Paul Simon sang Call me Al. He was half of Simon and Garfunkel. Sheesh
Happy 2023. Please could you react to ' Move by yourself ' by Donavon Frankenreiter.
