Same here. Toxicity came out when I was a freshman in highschool and my older brother bought the album. One day when he and his best friend were blasting it, I was captivated right away and from that day onwards, I became a metal head. It was as if the metal version of Cupid struck me with an arrow, thereby making me fall in love with the metal genre. My daughter and I have an inside joke about when I'm an old lady in a nursing home, she'll undoubtedly be getting phone calls from the nursing home director about me playing SOAD way too loudly and disturbing the other residents 🤣

I've always thought of this song to be about killing ones own ego. People with too big of an ego often have a perception of the world that does not extend beyond themselves, and are short sighted (when you lose small mind you free your life) Because once you can do that, you can actually drop your insecurities and thrive. (We lose ourselves but we find it all). "Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall"
It goes beyond that. The song sums up our whole existence - "Life is a waterfall, we're One in the river and One again after the fall." Meaning, that we're truly one with the River (Universe, God), we just feel like different personalities in this life (Waterfall), but we'll only find that out when we're back in the River (or if we lose small minds and free our eyes). When we "put up our walls", we try to distance ourselves from that primordial Unity and think of ourselves as separate beings, but in reality, that's just our ego speaking, who can't come to terms with that we're actually One and do not exist as separate entities. The ego exists only during the Waterfall which is temporary and the River is eternal. At the end of the video, our protagonist comes to terms that every material thing in this world is meaningless and temporary (like a waterfall).
