    I like the idea of shorter lists (10 swaps, etc.) where you can explain a bit more in details why it's sustainable, where to get that product or how to make it (for example, homemade cleaning agent recipe), how to start, other pros (and cons if any), price range, etc. so that we don't (or barely) need to do more research to get started. I think it would give a little extra help/boost to everyone who wishes to make the swaps. (You already do it for some things but I'd like to see it more often) :)

    If you can’t collect rainwater, you can save your waste water instead! Personally I keep a small bucket by my kitchen sink that I pour waste water into, when it’s full I just pour it into my watering can or a bottle for storage. I have saved some plastic soda bottles that I store any extra water in, I do have quite a few plants so I need several litres of water per week.
    - If you have a pet, when you change their water you can save the dirty water and the water from rinsing the bowl/bottle for your plants. I have cats, a dog and a guinea pig so most of my waste water comes from rinsing their water bowls and bottles twice a day.
    - Unsalted pasta water can also be used for plants (once it’s cooled down ofc 😅). The starch from the pasta water is actually good for your plants!
    - The water from washing your rice can be easily saved with a bowl or pot under the strainer and given to your plants.
    - I haven’t looked into it, but I’m sure the water from soaking things like beans or lentils could also be used for your plants.
    All of these things and several more could also be used for watering your compost; if you have a biodegradable dish soap for example you can pour your dirty dish water straight into the compost.

    I’m from the Uk and I think the go to is kitchen roll which is then just thrown away. I randomly ended up in possession of a hospital blanket which I was never going to use outside of hospital (they are not the best!) so I cut it into squares, hemmed them and now have a container on my table with them rolled up in cute little rolls, really easy to grab and use as a napkin and because NHS blankets are always mint green they look so much better on my table than a big roll of paper!

It is not common here, so my husband was skeptical at first, but now he loves it even more than I do and even installed one for his parents too because he recommended it so highly to them. For sure! I live in the US also and I’ve always mostly used cloth towels for wiping hands, cleaning up stuff, etc. We do technically still have a roll of paper towels (from Who Gives a Crap!), but we go through it super slowly because we pretty much only use for really messy stuff like cleaning up cat hack or wiping up grease - basically stuff that would ruin a reusable towel very quickly/ significantly shorten its life. We probably use like 2-5 rolls of paper towel for a whole year. Also, whenever we are given paper napkins at a restaurant or something, we keep those too and use them in the same way.

    Concerning LED lights: YES! 😍But don't fall into the trap of a rebound effect. Because it is so cheap and energy efficient, people often use way more light than before. That is not only a huge problem concerning resource consumption but also light pollution. And light pollution is one of the biggest issues of our time, even though most people don't even know about it 😳😳 It significantly affects our entire ecosystem and is even linked to these extreme cancer and obesity rates nowadays! (I can recommend the book "The End of Night: Searching for Natural Darkness in an Age of Artificial Light" by Paul Bogard if you're interested in this topic. That book got me hooked on this whole topic) :)

    In Norway the foodwaste goes into a separate container, and it produces biogas, compost or fertilizer for the farms. I did recently reduce the use of papertowels due to the increasing cost of the products. Most of the kitchen rolls went to drying our hands, easiest swap in the world to hang up a normal towel. 😊 About renewable energy resources.. Here in Norway, all energy is green, mainly from hydro energy, and some wind, but it has been a big debate here. The green energy scam. The energy companies charge extra to sell you this product. But, you get the same energy as before, they cant put greener energy into your house. What you pay for is a guarantee of origin, equivalent of your consumption, and you give through this sceme money to the Rainforest Foundation (Norway). Totally with you on recycling. And I might add, buy less, especially clothes, so it doesnt end up in mountains of clothing in Ghana or other places.

Do you wash your hands afterwards? What about stuff getting under findernails? Has anyone ever gotten sick from using this? Etc etc. You get the drift. I'm sure there are more questions. Hi Gittemary,
    Can I ask that you look into the sustainability of a Japanese bidet-toilet (the ones that are powered by electric and have the bidet incorporated into the toilet)?
    In the UK, bathrooms or separate WCs are often not large enough to accommodate both a toilet and a separate bidet - we're keen (when we can afford it) to replace our toilet with one of these Japanese style ones... But I'm curious if it's "better" for the environment, on the proviso that our electricity supplier uses a mix of renewable and fossil fuel.
    Many thanks!
    PS the lighting was beautiful.

    • @TravelSoMuch
      @TravelSoMuch Рік тому +4

      Hi Christopher, many in the zero waste community have opted for a bidet that is not separate from the toilet nor replaces the toilet, but is an attachment that is installed under the current toilet seat. It's connected to the same water pipe as the toilet, and doesn't require electricity at all. (There are some fancier ones that have heated options, but those aren't necessary and they're harder to install.) I know The Simple Environmentalist and Shelbizleee both have this kind of bidet if you want to see videos about it.

I think this is THE most important reason to compost... and a reason that might encourage less eco-inclined people to step up.... I understand there is two types of tips/land fill... an old school one; big hole in the ground, and one more like a tomb- totally encapsulated that doesn't allow liquids to leak (they must capture the (toxic liquid???) . . i wonder if that could be a topic of a future episode (if its not been already??) Tips/land fills across the world and how they work ( or don't work) exactly/engineeringly .. The two things that I have the most control over are lights and heating/cooling of my house.
    I restrict use of lights the majority of the day and then any lights I do use are connected to power strips to make it easier to control the few lights that do get used.
    Then with heating and cooling of my house (I do have dysautonomia and have poor temperature regulation of my own body so it makes things difficult.....) I have made it a habit of having my a/c setpoint at 76°f and the heat setpoint at 68°f. If I feel warmer or cooler then I use the theory of layers to fine tune my comfort through use of the following- yes or no sweatshirt/hoodie/light jacket, pants (leggings rather) are a must because of other issues from tactile issues and the use of leg braces, and then a variety of blankets, sheets and large body towels to cover my body parts as needed in random combinations.

    In the US if you own a house see if your state has any government support for installing solar/alternative energy sources in your home. My state has been pushing a program for this for the last couple of years, and sadly I'm a renter, but there are definitely support programs in the US for owners.

    • @coralovesnature

      Also if you live anywhere in the US, there is a significant federal tax credit for solar (and some other less common alternative energy sources). Our solar system cost like $30k, but we got like $10k of tax federal income tax credit to offset that. And because we don’t make enough money to even owe that much tax in a year, it basically ended up wiping out all of our tax for nearly 2 years, so that whole time I didn’t have to have any federal income tax withholding from my paycheck. (Still had to pay Social Security, Medicare, and state income tax, but federal income tax was by far the largest one for me prior).

    I've been looking into installing a bidet, but where I live (the Netherlands) many houses have the water tank and pipes of the toilet built into the wall, so in order to install a bidet you'd actually have to break down the wall and possibly install a new toilet... so not something you can do by yourself or in a rental. If I'm able to buy a house someday it's definitely something I want to do! But for now the best thing I can do is buy recycled toilet paper.

    I find it astonishing how much plastic I have to buy when shopping in the big grocery stores. I physically can't get many stuff in non-plastic (even just dry lentils). 😒

    I'm not gonna go vegan anytime soon (because my diet is a bit tastless already). I've actually started to wonder that, I would be at least a bit better to try and get meat as close as possible. And overall try to get more and more local thingies. I do still wanna add veggies into my life, but my closest shop tends to sell everything in plastic and from far away, so trying to get the best items takes too much energy from me :P

    A bidet would be fantastic, however, not everyone is on mains water. We live on a property and only have tank water, so water is very precious and we use it as sparingly as possible.
    Another UA-camr, also said nobody should air conditioning. We also live in the tropics, and need air conditioning in our bedrooms so we can sleep at the hotter times of the year.
    I love your channel, however, I would like to hear caveats to what you are talking about. Including the climate you live in, financial ability, the fact that not everywhere has recycling, and so on. Everyone’s situation is different, like we have a septic system, and must be careful what is going down the drains, so I use paper towels to wipe oil when needed, I would like to not need paper towels, but sometimes I do.
    Anyway, I would like to see caveats included in your videos, as you have fantastic information, just there will be valid exceptions which could make people feel guilty when they (the exceptions) are not included.
    Other than that, fantastic channel and information. 💜

    I think this would make a great series! ❤ I would love to know your thoughts on “eco-bricks”? I might be super late to the party, but I just came across this concept and have been looking into what it’s all about and if it’s a good idea or not (in terms of personal circumstances- i.e. geographical location, public resources/initiatives, etc.) because plastic film recycling is non-existent (I live in midwestern US). I have been wanting to invest in a recycling service from Terra Cycle for years (like their zero waste box)- they are of course quite expensive, but it would be the route I’d inevitably take if this eco-brick thing isn’t a good idea.

      Hi! I live in Spain and some years ago I heard about Terra Cycle and I loved BUT..... sadly I was a documentary called "El mito del reciclaje" that you can watched here on youtube. The thing is TerraCycle is fake. The documentary demonstrates how what the company does is take the products to be recycled to countries like Turkey where jurisdiction over recycling does not exist and they burn them there.😱You can see the frustrated face of an English lady collecting bags of crips and see her packet ready to fire. And another from USA, etc. At the end of the documentary they try to talk to Tom Szaky, the director of the company, and he just doesn't talk to them. He is obviously a swindler!!
      He deals with companies like pPantene, etc so that they gain brand image by saying "hey, I'm ecofriendy", they pay to terracycle and then terracycle simply transports the garbage to countries where there is no legislation on recycling and they are burned there. So, so, so, so sad.

    My husband and I have been reducing our meat consumption for sustainability. We'll never be 100% vegetarian (I'm the cook of the house and it's my comfort zone) but I'm finding a lot of meatless recipes end up using a lot of dairy. Is that still more sustainable? Or does that end up balancing things out as if we're eating meat?

    • @kaamos1243
      @kaamos1243 Рік тому

      In general dairy, is more environmentally friendly than beef for example. You can google the different carbon dioxide emissions for certain food products, but the thumb rule is that producing beef produces more carbon dioxide than pork, chicken and fish. Still eating those is not ethically substainable. And what it comes to dairy, cheese takes a lot of milk and thats worse for environment than milk for example
