@@rnupnorthbrrrsm6123 I ate it right from the plant I liked the taste. I also dried it and made tea from it. I rarely gathered the roots like some do because it takes the plants a while to recover.
Oh excellent! My husband was all in a panic, thinking we had a big patch of poison ivy on our property here in Northern Vermont. I was pretty sure it was not poison ivy and googled around until landing here. I’m definitely going to harvest some fruits this fall! Thanks!

So, is this more of a vine or an individual plant from seeds.
I gather this plant on my land and use it. this plant can lower your body temperature and has a cooling effect, nice in the hot months or if you have fever.

I've never heard anyone enunciate the whole word before. Here in the southern US it's usually pronounced "sassparilla". In one of W.C.Fields' films he's hawking an extract of the stuff off the back of a wagon - "Purple bark sassparilla! It'll grow hair and also cure warts! Purple bark sassparilla!" See, you've brought back a fun memory. 😉

Up in New Hampshire we say sassparilla too.
She isn't pronouncing it correctly. It's sarsa-parilla not sarsas-parilla. She's putting an extra S in there and putting the emphasis on the second syllable instead of the first.. I couldn't watch more than a minute because it was so grating on my ear to hear this from a would-be expert. And yes, I pronounce it sarsaparilla. Most people do pronounce it sassparilla, or just skip the middle "a" and say sarsparilla.

Great video! Wild sarsaparilla is in root beer a lot of times. Been trying to identify it. No one ever gives ID of where they are and what time of year! Am I supposed to keep walking in the woods every day for a year to try and identify different plants? Lol 🙄😉 Loved the back story of Ginseng too. ❤️

I wonder if I am in that 30% club like you because I always roamed the woods and empty lots as a kid and adult and never got any rash although others would flip out when walking with me saying they saw poison ivy and demand we turn around and walk back. Or maybe they were seeing Sarsaparilla as that was one of Grandpas favorite words and he sold my parents 5 acres off of his own for $5 to build a house upon. When I was a kid he was in his 80's and no longer going into the woods. He taught me how to pick berries when ripe though and used to pay me market price for berries I picked in the hedgerows. I used that money to buy my school lunches as the schools and my mom always fought over if paid or not, my mom refused to pay twice she said and so the school never fed me. I have a twin who also says she never got school lunches, but she never told me till we were in college, or I'd have given her money for sure. When grandpa died and we cleaned out his chest freezer in the basement, all those bags of berries were sitting there, I swear, although my mom promised he did used to eat them.

I am immune...but I test myself every year because things can change.
@@EdibleWildFood-1 yeah, I've had a few friends now that we're immune, until suddenly they weren't. Apparently every exposure increases the chance of developing a sensitivity to it. One of those friends had never had it in his life, despite exposure on a regular basis. He ended up in the hospital in his 50s with a severe reaction over 70% of his body, after clearing out a thickett.
@@Halicet Yikes! I touch it intentionally once every spring to test it on myself. I will touch it to point it out to people, but I never intentionally walk through it.
