      Thomas Michalski Yes it does! As a matter of fact I’m using this tip/trick on my forehand instead of the serve. On the serve I get more than enough effortless power with the pinky on the very edge of the grip. Ciao!

    Did this today with the baby finger off racquet (4 finger serve). Worked super well. More power, plus had ability to hit flat and kick serves equally well. Amazing.

    An added benefit is this actually makes your swing path longer, so more time to accelerate.
    When I was competing in javelin there was a trick of holding the javelin between the index and middle finger instead of the thumb and index, which made your arm effectively 1 1/2" longer and allowed a strong contraction of the muscles in the forearm to flex the wrist. Not sure if that fully compensated for the reduced external rotation of the forearm but it certainly made a linear pull much easier.

    Hi there! First of all, thanks a lot to the whole team of PYC for performing such a great channel full of interesting videos like this one!! As for the content of this one in particular, which I find so useful, I´d like to provide a tip that I use myself as a coach. Find a lawn area near the court and after explainning your students the benefits of taking their rackets with three fingers, tell them to throw their rackets as far as they can after making the serve gesture. So powerful!

We teach the technique often with the more heavy-duty junior racquets. The director doesn’t necessarily appreciate them bouncing off the court though ;)

    I almost serve always like that. *MASSIVE* first serve, *HUGE SPIN* on second serve. It's amazing. I discovered this almost 35 years ago, I was going to see training sessions of an ATP tournment here in Siracusa, Italy - what's now called "Challenger". I learnt a LOT looking at the training sessions. This was one of the thing I noticed for some players :) I was just thinking about adding lenght to the raquet, not about the loose swing that come out. Amazing :)

      @@Playyourcourt Just to clarify: I just loose the pinkie finger out of the bottom of the racquet; so I can still hold firmly but the movement is very loose, and so I gain power and prevent stiffness in my serve. I think Roddick was used to serve like that. And - about being loose on serve, is this why sometime players like Fognini, Paire, Tsitsipas and others happen to loose the racquet during the serve, smashing it on the court? There are some videos of them here on youtube :)

      asbestomolesto yes most players keep a very loose grip with a great deal of the pinkie off the racquet. Accompanied with sweat it makes it easy to loose the racquet off the serve. Sounds like you’re on to something. Keep cranking those serves!

    I use the rf97 version 11 of the Pro staff. I dropped my lil finger off the grip while trying this. The butt of that racket is so sharp, I actually got cut on the left side of the finger where it meets the nail!

    I tried this , generated very good power. Naturally relaxed. Afraid racket should not slip. Bit of pain. Show more demo. Nice 👍 explained , I also felt . Today morning first time I tried very good speed.

    Dude, I just started doing this naturally because my arm started hurting from a death grip. I was like, "This is so stupid, but it hurts, and I need to loosen up before my wife beats me."
    I still lost, but at least it helped me loosen up my grip, and now my serve is so much smoother after getting the feel. I went back to a full grip once I got the motion down.
    I still can't hit that back stop like you guys though. Wow. That's amazing.

    Actually, a tennis partner showed me this today. Have struggled this year trying to add speed to my serve. Easy 15 mph added after 10 minutes of practice, was surreal. I only dropped the pinky off though.

    Problem is that now in order to maintain the continental grip and not let the racquet twist during the motion by the centrifugal force, the remaining three fingers have to actually grip the racquet tighter, otherwise the racquet changes its orientation. Also, in this drill, what is the position of the index finger supposed to be, does it still need to be spread away from the rest?

    I tried this today with my coach and yes the racket drops more and if the toss is good, it works like a charm. So I thought, maybe I can get more of that 6 to 3 o'clock action (Nate uses) on the ball if I do something similar with my forehand grip, perhaps leaving the pinky dangling off the edge of the grip. And yes, it works as well provided the stroke mechanics are sound to begin with. (I still don't understand the notion of stacked shoulders though) Here's the problem: moisture starts building up on the last 2 inches of the grip and it becomes increasingly more slippery. In the summer heat, this could be an issue because you could conceivably Babolat someone in the skull--I don't know what Dutch law says about this and I don't want to find out. Here's my question: since my wrist is coming more in to play than it was, should I be doing strengthening exercises to avoid adding another injury to a very long list?

      Hi Scott, thanks for the feedback. The 3 finger technique is a great tool on the forehand as well. The technique is more of a training tool however and in time you will want to get your entire hand back on the racquet. If you drop the hand down on the grip with the base of the bottom of the hand slightly off the grip it will help you keep things loose. Strength training the wrist and forearms is always a good idea for tennis players. Wrist injuries are common and take a long time top heal, so definitely better to be proactive. Hope this helps!

    Top coaches including Bollieteri teach that the bottom heel of the palm should rest on top of the racquet during the serve. Any feedback on this?

      The vast majority of your hand should be on the racquet when serving, it’s favorable to leave the lower proximity of the palm off the racquet to help with mobility as the wrist moves through flexion and extension. The 3 fingers technique is simply a method to help limit your ability of over squeezing the grip when serving. A loose hand and wrist will allow the racquet to properly drop and reach optimal racquet head speed, improving the serve. Thanks for the question Hollywood!

    Oh my god! I used to serve with a waiter serve and I tried to serve just with three fingers and "voi la". My serve got so much shape and power. Then I left the pinky out and also got so much power. Guys, I'll thank you forever

    How do your prevent the racket from flying out of your hand? I have broken several rackets over the years due to holding my racket with 3 fingers.

      Hey Mark this drill isn’t meant to be done at full speed. In the video I’m swinging about 25% speed just to get the feel for how the racquet should be moving through to contact. I hope this helps, thanks for watching!

      Hi Chris, thanks for the question. This tip is all about muscle tension and controlling it. Once you feel like you are familiar with where the racquet is supposed to be going, simply focus on relaxing the grip, wrist and muscle through the forearm. If you can successfully keep the arm loose moving through all the phases of the serve, your ready to serve with your entire hand on the racquet. Hope this helps!

    my serve became much better with the three finger method. thank you for that! but are there really professionals or good players serving like this in a match?? i mean, i switched to a "four finger serve" during practice but it seems that i could also easily serve better with this technique under pressure. what do you think? all the best from germany kiesbett

      Thanks for the feedback, we're glad to hear the technique helped! The technique is really just a method to learn to relax the grip and meant primarily for the practice courts.       Hey Lowell to really get the proper feel of the racquet drop, remove your two bottom fingers completely. When it comes time to actually play, the focus should be on a loose grip to create the same movements.

    You can also swing your racket in a figure 8 slice loop...backhand slice, forehand slice, back and forth like that to loosen up your grip and find the rhythm. Let the tip of the racket flip naturally through the figure 8. That will give you the feeling of pronating your forearm at the top of the swing. A topspin/slice serve is nothing more than a forehand slice over your head.

      Nice addition to the post Jim. I used that religiously as a junior to find my swing path and still occasionally use it to loosen up my arm. I’m also a big fan of putting multiple tennis balls in stockings and swinging that in a figure 8. The way the weight distributes through the swing helps with the serving motion as well.     Nice tip! For some reason I often forget to do this, but when I do on good days it really helps ... when the racquet dangles and as I'm coming up with the edge of the racquet, it's almost like the sensation that for a millisecond I'm hardly even gripping the racquet but right before contact I regain control and give my hand a bit of a snap just as I pronate and make contact with the ball. Maybe that makes no sense to anyone LOL, but seems a little along the lines of what is being taught here. Of course, these guys are pros and I'm a hacker, but thanks for this, will give it a go tonight. I have a servemaster, think I'll dust it off and swing it a few times using the three DIGITS (for you OCD folks ha) only. 😃

      Thanks for the feedback George. This particular tip is primarily used on the practice court in order to help relax the grip and enable the proper swing path. What you describe sounds like your on the right path. We don't necessarily suggest using this tip in a competitive match but if you find it helps by all means swing away! Thanks for watching!

    i tried this 3 finger method in practice and i broke 3 rackets because racket came out of my hand on follow thru and it went straight into to ground

      Hey Rich, thanks for watching! This is more of a drill to help you get the feel for the correct racquet path on the serve. We ultimately want you to add the fingers back but grip the racquet lightly enough that the swing path is the same. I hope this helps!

    Yeah that makes sense, 8 fingers per hand gives you more grip and a larger surface area to transfer power. Double handers gain the most, 16 fingers. But you need a custom made longer handle. hmmmmmmm

      Walter ! His name probably dates him to a wooden raquet start to his tennis. Walter , why don't you try what Sampras did. I use this now. Along with keeping my raquet elbow high on take back too. Keep pinky on butt and then release thumb and forefinger. This gives a strong FEEL but also allows enough wiggle to keep the looseness too. I get more pop and , AND , more pronation also ! Try it and good luck from Wales.

    3 fingers technique? ... you can't produce enough power by serving with 3 fingers. You can still flex your arm and be tense even when you're holding the racket with 3 fingers. Just relax and loosen your grip before and after striking the serve, like doing a normal punch (relax-tense-relax).

      Hey Goran, thanks for watching! Sorry for the confusion, the purpose of this drill is to get the feel of the racquet drop and the correct path of the racquet through the serve. We’re not suggesting eliminating two fingers permanently from your serve - this is simply a drill to help improve serve mechanics.

      Thanks for the feedback. I think honestly we could teach this lesson without you even seeing the video - the big take away is to relax your grip on your serve so the racquet drops perpendicular to the ground on the pull back. If you’re not sure what this feels like, holding the racquet with 3 fingers will force you into the correct racquet drop so you can get the feel. Hopefully this helps!
