- The MIM-104 Patriot is a surface-to-air missile (SAM) system, the primary of its kind used by the United States Army and several allied nations. It is manufactured by the U.S. defense contractor Raytheon and derives its name from the radar component of the weapon system. The AN/MPQ-53 at the heart of the system is known as the "Phased Array Tracking Radar to Intercept on Target" which is a backronym for PATRIOT.

I was a PATRIOT Battery 1SG Dharan, Saudi Arabia. Later a CSM for a PATRIOT Battalion in Kuwait. With the right maintainers the systems worked excellent.

I just read about the systems and I know they work very well....I mean the radar from the Patriot from the Gulf War was pretty advanced that the Army decided to use it against scuds and those were Pac 2s meant for jets and planes. So if it's working properly by the operators
It shall do a very good job of destroying BALLISTIC missiles and planes. 4 batteries containing pac2s and pac3s should protect the area very well.

They wanted to show it was capable of hitting something that small, not that they are going to waste them on them normally. We have tech that we are developing to take drones out. You should watch the video instead of criticizing everything US military.
It looks like they better start testing a little more robustly, because allies are dumping the Patriot in favor of the S-400.

It's because of missile defense systems like this and the Russian and Chinese equivalents, that the USA, Russia, and China have been focusing so much effort on developing hypersonic missiles.
Hypersonic missiles would travel at such great velocities, Mach 5+, or almost 4,000 mph, that no current missile-defense system would be able to track and shoot it down.

The Patriots Phased array radar we were told when we were in the Army if you put 3000 pencils down range it can track each one so the Patriot can track each piece of debris when the scud missile is breaking up or any other low-tech weapon that means that the Warhead is lo-tech also and the proximity fuse Warhead of the Patriot needs to either engage directly or it's not going to destroy it also in Saudi Arabia they have Bad roubds sometimes and that's what happens when the missile comes out of the can and then crashes several hundred yards in front of the launcher

The Patriot Pacs are being produced at 500 missiles per year, now its going to go to 750 Pac2s and Pac3s per year. The Navy is also considered putting them in their Mark41 vertical launchers the reason is because Lockhed Martin has the capacity to expand production relatively easy compared to building SM3s and SM6s!

The Patriot wasn't developed for low-flying objects. You'd need SHORAD systems for that. The S400 would not have faired any better. It's a simple result of the laws of physics that systems optimized to intercept fast, high flying objects will have trouble with slow, low flying ones.

@@Baskara0490 The S400 has the exact same limitations. The S400 is also incapable of effectively targeting low flying cruise missiles or drones. At Khmeimmim base in Syria the S400 battery has not managed to intercept even a single drone in dozens of attacks. In fact, even the Russian SHORAD systems have been performing poorly; the pantsyr has hit only 18% of its targets at Khmeimmim airbase.
And the S400 does not have a 250 km range. That 250 km is the maximum brochure range for a 4m2 RCS target. But brochure ranges are theoretical maximums never reached in real life scenarios and modern fighters present a much smaller RCS than 4m2. Against a modern F35 for example the range drops down to as little as 16 km (calculated based on brochure capabilities). And that is not even taking into account jamming and other countermeasures.

The Patriot has been around for decades, and upgraded many times, and it has intercepted missiles in combat, something that a Russian SAM has never done.
First. The air defenders needs a head shift towards the right direction. Second. They have to go back to the drawing board and design air defending missiles that are comparable to the S-300, S-400 and S-500 of Russia. Or switch over to laser defending technology.

Does the Patriot missle system come with the C-ram system for protection. This system could be an easy target for Russian anti- radiation missles specifically designed for systems like the Patriot. Also it takes up alot of area, can be easily seen from reconasence and satellite. Takes weeks, even many months to train to operate. Just my personal opinion, but I think placing C-rams and the NASAMS in the needed areas would be sufficient and less costly.

I rarely hear Canada listed for ungraded military equipment. I believe that's because they live under the U.S. defense umbrella. It wouldn't surprise me to learn Canada pays into the U.S. defense budget, but their defenses only need to hold invaders off for a handful of hours. Getting civilian aircraft out of the sky, getting civilian ships and boats into port, before the U.S. heavy transports are landing in their airports and The U.S. Navy is blockading their waters from invading forces. The U.S. is intolerant of North America being attacked. They're funny that way. (Not to mention troops, patriot missile systems, flights of battle and troop-carrying helicopters, and main battle tanks rolling across the shared border.)

@@littlebird7637 its pac3 missile is the same price of a 40N6 but the sensor of pac3 is a lot more sophisticated with hit to kill vs blast fragmentation. Hit to kill is way more effective as it destroys the missile..that's why US upgraded all its sensors and designs for these anti ballistics while Russia just upgraded it this year with that tech.
Those upgrades are expensive vs blast fragmentation which doesnt alway get the ballistic missile useless often second hand damage spills out!

The U-2 spy plane that was meant to out altitude any soviet missile got shoot by an S-75 Dvina. I just don't see how the Patriot compares to the S-300, 400 and 500.

@@Rumbler298 The S400 uses a proximity fuse explosive to try and destroy ballistic missiles. This is what the US tried in 1990-1991, and it did not work very well. That is why with PAC-3 (and THAAD) they moved to a kinetic kill warhead.
A great many of us expect that the first time somebody tries to shoot down a ballistic missile with the S400, it will be much the same as when the US tried it 30 years ago. They will get some hits, but because it is not optimized for ballistic missiles, they will largely be ineffective.
I know what I am talking about here, especially when looking at the entire system. Add in other things like reload times and the S400 is not as great as it sounds to an amateur.
@@michaelmartin436 True, the S-400 was meant as a SAM not a baillistic missile defense. its ballistic missile defense is only secondary. If a lot of ballistic missile were coming I would have the THAAD as it specialized in balllistic missile defense and if a load of enemy aircraft is expected then I would have the S-400. S-400 is a jack-of-all trades while the THAAD is a specialist. the PAC-3 is outdated and US is already upgrading them to PAAC-4 which would have extended range but even that don't go close to the range of the S-300 let alone a 400. I dunno why the US still calls the patriot as a long range SAM. It has almost identical range and capabilities to the upgraded russian TOR SAM but the ruskies calls the TOR just a medium range missile
@@Rumbler298 Sorry, wrong. PAC-4 is like PAC-2, a software upgrade. Just as PAC-2 used the original missiles, PAC-4 uses the same missiles (GEM, PAC-3) as the system used before PAC-4. All it did was streamline the software inside of the system.
And PATRIOT was never "long range", not sure where you get that from. It is local area defense only, that is all it was ever said to be. Same as SHORAD (and CIWS that it came from) was always called "Point Defense".

The Patriot has some handicaps what was easy to see at the use against the Houthis old Scud rockets and in the Irak war. Turkey, a NATO ally has decided for the S-400. The US was upset but it was reasonable due to the minor qualification. Even the US are testing the Israeli "David Sling" as a close protection system.

The Houthis in Yemen have been known to fly drones into the Patriot's radars before launching missiles, effectively rendering it useless against ballistic missiles in some cases.
The Patriot Missile system has had both some wins and losses in live combat. It's shot down a few rockets by the Houthis and some have gotten through. It's a tricky situation. The UAE used it also to shoot down Houthi drones, but some still came through. Israel feels like it's ok, but they still went and created David's Sling ( along with the US) because they think it'll work better if Iran tries to penetrate their defence system with their ballistic missiles that they have. Kinda hard to tell tho .

When Patriot could not get it done, just remember the HIMARS or MLRSA1 can. The MLRS stood out in the first Gulf War where Patriot failed. The MLRS/HIMARS is still leading the way.
