Walks in England: A Stroll Through Steyning in West Sussex

- Today, I am taking a stroll through the West Sussex downland town of Steyning. Originally a Saxon settlement, it grew to become an important port town - the River Adur ran closer than it does today. The Norman's built their castle close by at Bramber and the railways linked it to London for a hundred years until Dr Richard Beeching cut the line in the 1960s. But the architecture is stunning and that's what I am here to have a look at.

Although I now live in Somerset, I was born in 1950 and grew up in Steyning. I went to the Primary School, both the old and the new. Then onto Steyning Secondary Modern, as it was then. Steyning will always remain my home, and proud to have lived there.
Richard; My wife and I, who live in the USA, have dear friends living in Steyning and we visited and stayed them in 2017 and 2018. We fell in love with the eclectic charm of not only the town of Steyning but also with the local folks we had met during both of our stays. We made plans to visit again this year (2020) however with the COVID-19 we had to cancel. Thanks for sharing your video and stirring within us some great memories.
STEYNING, IS STUNNING!!!
My hometown of Steyning. There is so much history there and when I grew up there I would spend so many days just exploring throughout the given day. Richard as I am sure you are aware, The Areas surrounding Steyning have many small lanes and pathways going for example, towards Washington & Storrington and in the other Direction towards Henfield. The main highway, as you know replaced the railway link and one of the South Down's most famous trains - The Steyning Flyer.
The old railway and the main highway probably being built over a series of much older roads and paths. Steyning of course was built around the main church - St Cuthman's. Which sits at a crossroads near the library. An interesting legend surrounds St Cuthman.
It's been a number of years since I was there. So it is good to see it through your video.

Traffic seems to blight so many villages and small towns.
That is very picturesque and they appear to be doing quite well without a train station. My wife enjoyed this video with me!

Steyning's one of those deceptive places...looks all rustic and rural, yet I believe 10,000 people live in and around...cracking village though, full of great memories

St. Cuthman, the lad with a hand cart wherein he pushed his mother and it broke and out tumbled his old Mum so there they stayed at that place which was to become Steyning. In early times the river was navigable as far as Steyning and along with the harbour at Old Shoreham it too held sufficient water to accommodate ships. The River Adur is its name, but its a fairly modern invention. The old name which dates from Anglo-Saxon times was probably Soar (hence Shoreham at its mouth). Dryden invented the "new" name to support his idea that the Roman Portus Adurni was actually at the mouth of the Soar. Well, it wasn't but John Dryden, who was appointed the first Poet Laureate in 1668, fancied he could weave some fanciful tale to 'make it fit' and I suppose if you repeat something enough times it will stick. At school in the 50's we always called it the Shoreham River. As a youngster I would cycle from Shoreham to Steyning to see my cousin who lived in Bramber in her little cottage, the roads then had a fraction of the traffic compared to today. Steyning was absolutely fascinating! Just some absolute fabulous old architecture. With Steyning being so close to Bramber Castle, it made me wonder if my De Braose ancestors musta but had to frequented this town!!!
I must go back to Steyning and do a better study of the place.

You missed cobblestone walk where the clock tower is - brilliant collection of independent shops. Great view of roof tiles from in there.

A fine tour. I came upon this video after reading that Sir Laurence Olivier died in Stenying. Presumably, Olivier and Baroness Joan Plowright lived in the village? Regardless of how I got here, I am so pleased to have done so. As I missed my chance to travel to the UK, I am very grateful to have had this virtual ramble.

Lovely place Stenying. The church has a bricked up door to the rear. The story goes, that the devil was chased out of the church and the door, then bricked up so he couldn't return. There are also some interesting gargoyles around the roof, including one of a local woman - a gossip, with her had over her mouth.

Sadly busy with much traffic - but it probably always was, due to the fact it was a port.
Disappointing......lack of historic detail, dates etc. Poorly researched, and too much vision of narrator..!!! Room for improvement in all aspects.

No offense, but I’d rather look at the architecture ahead of you, than stare at your talking head! Can’t understand why you turn the camera around onto yourself.

@@RichardVobes: My comment was not rude; in fact it was reasonable, as well as good-natured. My point was a valid one, and deserved an explanation: Why DID you keep turning the camera around, thus filling the frame with your visage, while walking past the architecture YOU found so interesting, but WE couldn’t see?!
Your reply was that of an insecure, peevish adolescent, not an aging grown-up. (An aging grown-up who gallumphed through earlier videos, like a huge ham who THINKS he’s being funny).
I’ve definitely watched enough of your videos to decide that you’re kind of creepy: Licking your chops over a much younger mother of a toddler; using a camping stove in your black van, refusing to open a window, saying, “I can do whatever I want”, as I wondered what, exactly, that foreshadowed...I’ve seen enough of your sketchy vibe to know that I’m not buying what you’re trying to sell!
