  • Some harmonica keys just don't get much love from blues harmonica players. In this occasional series of videos, I'll talk about that. With Adam Gussow of Modern Blues Harmonica

    Some guitar players (and their bands) are tuned down !/2 step either for the vocalist or for easier bending strings. Some guitar players use capos and play in unusual keys. For my first studio gig I had bought 4 more harps to complete getting all the keys, just in case... It turned out that the singer/guitar player WAS tuned down 1/2 step, but I had the harps I had just bought. I decided I never wanted to be the harp player that had to say, "I can't play in that key; I don't have the right harp." I always bring a full set if I am going to sit in, play at a jam, or go in the studio. Also, guest vocalists called to the stage sometimes call keys needing one of the less often used harps.

    Db harps are amazing. My best OoTB MBD is a Db.
    Ab are also perfect for playing downtuned blues when the singer wants to chill for a bit. Love Ab harps.

    I use B harp pretty often. My main band main hit is in C#m and we play it every gig. With other band we always play “Give me one reason” in F#. In third band we also have one song in E which lays perfect in 12 position. Today I plan to record a guest track in C#m too.

    Great to mention Johnny Young's Tighten Up On It. That track just hit me between the eyes when I first heard it on Chicago/The Blues/Today! Vol. 3. I believe this to be some of Big Walter's best recorded work. Many thanks.

    I accidentally bought a B harp instead of a Bb when i first started playing. Turned out to be a blessing as Canned Heats' version of Help is in the key of F#. Also I agree that all harps can be bluesy, but I feel like the Ab is suuuuuper blusey, or is that just me?

    Psychotic Reaction by Count Five is a classic 60s rocker with harmonica in F sharp. If I remember correctly, the song itself was recorded with a C harp, but the tape machine was running at the wrong speed.

    Adam,
    I recently began playing harmonica a few months ago, and I love it, it has changed my life as a musician and developing songwriter. "Crossroads Blues" was the first song I learned thanks to your creative expression and wonderful lessons! My harmonicas however, only seem to last up to a week, or usually only about 5 days. I do often play loud, and with the hohner blues harps, special 20s, and marine bands ive played, the 5 draw consistently fails to stay in tune. I intend to switch and begin plating Lee Oskar harps, but i wonder if you also experience this issue of a failing 5 draw reed rather quickly after buying a new Hohner harmonica. Blues on! -Ben Hawthorne, Business of Friends.

    • @gussowsclassicbluesharmoni2726
      @gussowsclassicbluesharmoni2726  2 роки тому +1

      All of the draw reeds that we wail on, but particularly 5 draw and 4 draw, can fail, and playing very hard certainly increases the likelihood of that. But 5 days is much too soon. So I suspect that you're not just playing very hard, but playing very hard in a way that super-stresses your reeds. Sounds to me like you need to take your next several harps and make a point of playing them noticeably more gently. See how long they last.

    Good that you put up this video... I recently bought a Hohner Crossover in B. I love the Crossover. I jumped on it because it was at a very good price US$42. The intention was to tune it to a Bb... I have been playing it for a couple of days and i just love the sound... infact i knew yours a B harp unmistakably 5 seconds into the video.... After seeing this video, i have decided to leave as it is :) And i bought a Rocket Amp in Bb instead today... Love your videos! Keep on Rockin' 🤟....

    Here's one... The amazing and legendary John Mayall & The Bluesbreaker's "Beano" album featuring Eric Clapton has one song that's just harp, bass & drums; Parchman Farm... in F#!
    Some of the coolest and toughest harp playing I had ever heard when I was a kid. It became my favorite song on the record (even though I was just a guitar player at the time). When I started my blues band in the mid '90s I got a great harp player and this quickly became our closing song of the night.
    Fast forward to 2017 when I decided to really learn harmonica and started woodshedding every day with various keys. I found the B Harp to be the easiest to bend and learn licks on. Don't know about anyone else, but for me some keys seemed to have "problem reeds" that required you to change your embouchure in mid stride to get right. This drove me nuts! I found the B Harp to be the most consistent from high to low reeds with one embouchure. It just seemed easier to play. So now when anyone asks what key to learn on I recommend they get a C for lessons and B or Bb to have fun with.
    Thanks for this great video. The lonely B Harp finally gets some well deserved love!

    • @duanewoodbury8314
      @duanewoodbury8314 2 роки тому +1

      I found by blowing in the back of the harmonica real slow for a couple of minutes warms the harmonica and those problem key soften up and play better. But then I'm no expert. But I love my B harp. I play solo and it has a real nice bass sound which I am particular to. A lot of people like C harps but its not bass enough for the likes of me playing solo. I tend to stick to Ab, A, B , and G . But then I don't have all 13 keys , ony 6 keys and laugh at this one ,2 Cs one blues harp and one special 20. But like I said I rarely use the 2 Cs. . Harp on .Peace. Out. D.

    I’m sure I’m probably wrong ,and currently trying to drill music theory into my head ,but I thought Cb would be a half step under c not B ? If I’m wrong please explain , it’s driving me nuts when attempting to take scales from piano to harp.

      B and Cb are the same key. I didn't think there WAS a key of Cb, but my son, who plays low brass and is a great sight reader, said that he was playing sheet music for a song in the key of Cb. I think it's six flats.

    Yep... I play with a singer/guitarist that tunes half a step down. I end up playing my "B" on about 40% of his songs. Sometimes we do five or six songs on a roll and I just sit on the "B" for half an hour. Then he calls another set of tunes and I'm on Ab or Db and then again I might do an F# on his take for Margarittaville. Nice video Adam.

    Hi Adam,really nice to see you again,I am a casual diatonic beginner,and I think that your work is a treasure and a mouthful of reality for harmonica players.I have a question for you about a thing that it really intrigues me.There is a new chromatic harmonica model on the market that doesnt need the slider, I have not had the opportunity to try it yet,but from some videos on UA-cam, I find it quite revolutionary, or maybe ,another weird thing...I would greatly appreciate your opinion about it.It is about the seydel nonslider chromatic deluxe steel.Thank you !
