My ultimate bias is Wheein, but I agree that Hwasa is the hottest chick in Korea. Though my name is written in Japanese, I'm actually Korean, and I understand why Hwasa was considered 'the ugly' girl(cuz I'm used to the Korean standards...it's super strict). But as I kept watching her performance and music videos I found myself so attracted to her, and sometimes forget to breathe because she is so beautiful. There is so much appeal and charismatic presence to her, made me realize that's how we define beauty, not by some stupid standards.
In korea the beauty standard for people are to be thin, pale, slim face and v line jaw and for idols its to be absolutely PERFECT. Hwasa, especially when they debuted, is way bigger than that standard. She is curvier and they dont like that like we do in the west. Also shes tanner than most idols. Most asians are tan but for idols people like them to be pale. There are so many photos of idols with white foundations and tan necks because of this. And a lot of photos that whitewash them even more, even the already pale idols. Beauty standards for idols are crazy and people are never satisfied with how idols look so all idols suffer from critic from the public but in Hwasa's case she was harassed to no extent for some reason by people online. Ive never seen someone get so much hate.
Idol standards are intense, it must be so hard to meet those standards and maintain. It makes us admire Hwasa even more that she could succeed regardless. It does seem like she attracts a lot of criticism and hate. We noticed she was trending on twitter yesterday, and mostly what was been said wasn't great.
Solar 161 cm Hwasa 160 cm Moonbyul 163cm Wheein 158 cm They even did a song about their height in their early days called( Taller than you ) it is so funny
Oooo thanks for the recommendation. We just watched her MAMA 2020 Maria performance, so we want to check that song from her out first, but we'll add LMM to the list and get the tissues ready! :)
great reaction! you should definitely check out their immortal songs medley (to see more of their power vocals) and their queendom performances (to see more of their stage presence)
We've heard Paint Me and she sounded great. It was the first any only time we've heard her sing so far! It'll be intersting to hear what she does in her solo work! :)
"Technical-wise" Mamamoo is the best vocal-based groups in kpop so far imo. Of course don't get me wrong, I mean if you look individually for each person in each different groups, you can find some incredible singer as well that might be on the same level as Mamamoo or even better than them. But the harmonies that Mamamoo puts together is so unbelievably good and fit each other tone. They're already well-known for their live vocals. Both fans and people in music industry already know how strong and capable they are (both as a group and as a soloist). Mostly in kpop, each group has only 1 or 2 at max that can be considered as the main vocal position. You'll also see different other position such as main/lead vocalist, main/lead rapper, main/lead dancer, even the "visual/face of the group" role. They all can still sing at some extent but not as good as the main vocalist or not really expertise in vocals. But it's a different case with Mamamoo since all four of them are equally strong vocalist and all can be a rapper as well.
I think what I like the most about mamamoos singing is that they have confidence they can sing. I see a lot of idols, some that may even have a more favorable natural tone or may even be "technically" better then the mamamoo girls. But they lack in the confidence and passion they have for singing. I've also come to realise recently that no one in the Industry holds a mic as well as mamamoo. it's like part of their body, its very natural. which is very interesting I could write a lot about it especially with solar
Mamamoo have already struck us a prioritising vocals. We saw their Dingo Killing Voice session and they were so good!! Definitely deserve their title as vocal queens.
@@Iam-vi4zd that might be because the last two comebacks they wanted to show off hard choreography so for a lot of the live performances they used head mics to free up both hands, but it’s well known that they hate them. Hopefully when things get more back to normal they’ll have more performance so you’ll get to see it more.
For sure, moos wouldn't be surprised if Wheein somehow ended up being an astronaut. That woman fr fr can do anything lol Uh haha, I don't know if you guys got it, but the part at 29:50 with Hwasa talking to the fan about "taking her top off for them" would make better sense in english translated like the idiom "to give the shirt off her back" kind of thing. Also, totally mentioned already about their CEO being cool and whatnot, but another example would be during MAMA 2018 (the stage with the red bodysuit Hwasa wore, she was being criticized left and right after) the CEO was asked to give a comment, and his response was that he was surprised but he trusted Mamamoo to make their own decisions. It's interesting since Hwasa is the focal point of the hate and criticism, I don't think newcomers realize that as a group and individually, none of Mamamoo's members actually check all the idol beauty standard boxes. They each went from company to company getting rejected, before being placed together in RBW, and even then, before debut, people within their company doubted their success because around that time there was only one formula to success in the industry and they didn't have it. In each their own way, they've totally changed standards and norms, and that's probably why they all work so well together as a group
Wheenin on the mars mission haha Oh no I guess we'd take that more literally as someone in the audience was stripping for her. Hahah "to give the shirt off her back" makes sense, but then with the power MMM hold the former makes sense too. 😂 Yeah we've noticed as a group they are all a bit more unique in their visuals, but especially Hwasa and Moonbyul. I guess Hwasa getting all the heat for her visuals makes you forget the others are typical idols visuals either... although they're all beautiful (and handsome!). It does make their group more accessible and dynamic though! :)
After you know about Whasa's stories , then go back to check Maria and LMM , check the lyrics , haters really hurt a lot . But also let us know how she feels and how she went through . Poor baby girl , hope fans love can keep support her . I really love MMM's voice , especially Hwasa . Please check out more mamamoo live performance , thanks.
I have noticed one thing that korean netizen obsessively try to force the standards on kpop idols and that's the reason why most companies don't take artist who have completely different features from Korean standards of beauty, I am sure you will be shocked to know that according to korean kpop standards mamamoo was actually considered not pretty, before their debut the ceo of Mamamoo's company rbw introduced the group infront of other companies and every said that they are not pretty they will definitely flop as a group that's mamamoo themselves thought of focusing more on vocals instead of thinking about prettiness, and that's also the reason why they focused more on their talent rather than focusing on how much I should eat today otherwise I will become fat, and btw according to korean beauty standards your weight have to be below 50,double eyelids, round eyes, they have to be tall(I don't what's the exact height but mamamoo is short compared to that) etc. That's why hwasa got more hate than the other members even though others also get some hate. However I have noticed things are changing that too really slowly, but back when they debut these standards were really strict.
I live in Korea and I am Korean. A lot of women around here do think Hwasa is realy pretty and has great body shape Also, the standards you talked about are mostly 'Idol standards'. Basically, that means some Koreans may think that is real beauty while others may not. Also, Koreans (Asians) have thinner bones and take in less calories so we tend to be a bit thinner than people who live in other countries so being '50kg' is easier than people think. (I've never heard of that standard but ...anyway) And yeah, I agree that Koreans should change some standards and think of all types of skin color/body shape the same way
@@pupwhee oh ya thanks I got some perspective from a Korean 😊, btw I did right Korean idol standards maybe I forgot to write that in some places, cause I see a lot of Korean UA-camrs that's y i know it not the standard between the general public. But I do think telling a artist, actually to anyone to maintain their weight is rude, have seen a lot of clips where idols were told to maintain looking slim to the extreme end especially the one where an audience told sulli to reduce some fat around thigh areas, which was really bad(I think that's my opinion) other than that as an Korean you definitely know the situations better. Cause I am sure on screen and off screen a little bit different
Not shocked, but definitely aghast! :( Being an idol is really a difficult job, it must be so stressful meeting the visual and talent expectations. We're glad Mamamoo were able to rise despite all the criticism!
I believe beauty standards are atrocious, including the Western beauty standards of being "thicc." I love how Hwasa phrases that she'll become her own standard of beauty rather than choosing a beauty standard. We don't really see any asian actors or asian singers in places like America, and this is due to the beauty standards there. Also, I disagree with only Hwasa adding vocal color. I think they all do and without one or the other then Mamamoo would not be complete. They all faced their own hardships and harsh criticism and were all told that they were ugly. As a group, they worked really hard to be where they are now. And since they were all told they were ugly, they had to work hard in the performance aspect, which is why they bring such great performances. Hwasa is the popular member so it is reported more often, but they all receive hate.
You should totally see their debut, it's very good. However it is very easy to accidentally pick a no-subtitle one - and you will _really_ want to have subtitles for that one. Make sure to watch it on their channel, here: ua-cam.com/video/QwjWP2Tnsjk/v-deo.html
