Doctor Who | Animating Big Finish?

- As an amateur animator, Will ponders if the missing episode animations will segway into Big Finish cartoon adaptations, the pros and cons of such a move, and which plays he thinks would be the best choices for each Doctor in these circumstances.

For me it would be the 6th Doctor audios, his adventures with Evelyn and possibly the Brink of death in order for fans to fill the missing gaps of his character arc.

Personally, I'd like to see the The Ultimate Adventure, the adaptation of the stage play to be animated.
Fearmonger (Sylvester and Sophie) for me plus either The Land of the Dead or Winter for the Adept (5th Dr and Nyssa). They are earlier stories and therefore more standard in their storytelling plus the two Davison stories are set in a snowbound landscape so they wouldn't require much in the way of location artwork. They do contain strands of the Nyssa is Psychic storyline though.
Season 23, 27 or any other of the lost stories might be good choices as fans would love to see stories that never got made
I'd go with STORM WARNING for McGann, and MASTERS OF EARTH for Colin Baker
The Four Doctors. I think it's timey wimey plot would be easier to follow if visualised. Plus a multi doctor story with a ton of Dalek fan service would be quite popular.
Maybe this is controversial, but I wouldn't mind having as much big finish animated as possible. One idea is to adapt the main range relatively in order of release, but maybe move up McGann's era and include 4, 9, and 10 throughout so everyone is represented?
I see no downsides to doing this cause all it does is make the audios more accessible, people like my mum and dad love doctor who and are actively mad that they aren't able to enjoy the 8th doctor with me.
And to me there are no downsides, heck, if you don't like the visuals, just put them on and don't look at the telly, you can still listen to them but for those who want to see it they still can and more available as I have met many people who don't trust buying from big finish.
I enjoyed this discussion and agree with what you said about certain stories not working and so they'd have to choose carefully. But when this topic is brought up it often irks me and I can get a bit defensive. I adore the audio medium (it's probably my favourite storytelling medium honestly) and I find it disappointing how niche it has become. The dismissive attitude towards the medium creates the narrative that we NEED big finish stories to be animated and they're somehow lesser forms of art because they don't have visuals. Ironically, it reminds me of how the medium of animation has historically been looked down upon by Hollywood and critics as only being for kids. I don't know, books didn't go anywhere or loose their artistic status when radio plays became the norm, so why did this happen to audio plays when television did? Really, big finish is one of the only big modern production companies keeping the medium alive, and tbh they were only able to get so popular because of having the doctor who brand attached. I get that the medium isn't for everyone, but so many turn their nose up and won't even give it a try. I do hope that one day it will see a resurgence in popularity and given the appreciation it deserves rather than being seen as old fashioned or fringe. And thus concludes this TED talk with the ambassador for audio dramas 😂

Tbh I think it is something that sounds more interesting than it actually would be in practice. All of the best Big Finish is the stuff they couldn't / wouldn't do anyway, for all of the reasons you talked about: not family friendly enough, too esoteric, too experimental, created to work best as audio in the first place, too long or complex, not commerical enough etc. So take all of that out and you'e just left with the vanilla, uninteresting stuff that hoves closely to the modern TV format. I think it would be boring. I can barely LISTEN through to the end of 'Energy of the Daleks' it is so by numbers, let alone sit and watch it animated. And they'de favour new Who stuff and don't we already have enough David Tennant? Apart from 'Spare Parts' are any of the stories you chose (with fantastic reasoning btw) going to intrigue anyone enough to make them want to dip into Big Finish? It would be watch as a novelty and forget about - like 'shada'.
It just wouldn't be as good as people imagine it.
As long as it's good Big Finish I'd be willing to give this a try. An animation of Jubilee would be amazing. An animation of 8 and his new(ish) trans assistant? Fuck off.
