Had my tag for 14 years. Were it every single day as my only timepiece. It is certainly not pampered. It has proven to be a robust and perfectly reliable watch. The fact that it keeps great time is a huge bonus here.

Everyone loves to rag on Tag but the truth is they have pretty nice designs, a large following, great brand recognition, and they do an amazing job marketing. Vintage Heuers are the quintessential sports/racing watches and many models represent excellent bang per buck. In my opinion early Tag Heuers from the 80s and 90s are an absolute steal right now.

in 2004 I was given a 2 tone Tag Heuer 2000 professional automatic, previously owned by my father, and for all these years it never failed, I never serviced it, I wasn't aware it had to be, I trashed it the fullest, I wore it while doing kickflips, mountain biking etc, I wore it in uni, getting blind drunk left and right, I left it outside under 45c heat of the Australian sun, I used it as knuckle duster as knuckle dusters are illegal here, and all through that, the only fault - the stainless steel is now showing through the gold plating.

Mark latjes Yeah many TAG auto have a solid and robust ETA movement inside like a 2428 yet because of the plastic movement spacers are written off as complete junk by enthusiasts. Whereas the Oris divers 65 with its no better, Sellita, ETA clone movement is nigh-on worshipped in the watch community as being this sensational; awesome value for money and super robust and reliable diver. Sorry but there’s a whiff of the emperor’s new clothes going on here.

Nothing but respect for your opinion and your experiences. I have owned a simple Formula 1 for over a decade and had no issues with it. In fact out of all the watches ive owned its been by far the most reliable. Ive even dived with it to 90 feet on 4 separate occasions. Its proven as rugged as my 3 Suunto watches ( witch were issued to me while in the US Navy, and the 2 G shocks ) which in my opinion is a better example of an over priced time piece. However..everyones opinion is valid as long as they are respectful. And i respect yours

I totally respect your opinion. Before I knew anything about watches, my folks got me a quartz Tag from their now discontinued 1500 series for college graduation around 1995. It lasted without issue until this year, when the date dial stopped working properly, getting stuck at the 15th and 16th every month. In all that time I never really had it properly serviced aside from battery replacement about four years ago.
Sadly, a repair estimate from a certified service shop quoted me $450, which is way too much in my opinion. Now I know enough about watches to settle for nothing but an automatic movement, preferably something made in-house and not a Valjoux or whatever they use. Until I can get myself an Omega Speedmaster, I'm wearing a Seiko Recraft automatic which looks great, has an auto movement, a nice warranty, and cost me all of $100.

You’re 100% correct about Tag Heuer. After spending $2900 on a top of the line AquaRacer Calibre 16, its stopped winding and functioning three months post warranty. The authorized dealer wanted $500 just to look at it. Anyway, I took it to a local watch repair expert and total cost to fix was $475.00. Even he told me it’s a poorly made and fragile watch. I would advise anyone to spend a bit more and get an Omega. I have an Omega that is older than the Tag and has never failed. Hopefully Tag will get it together and fix their issues.

I have one Tag Heuer, bought in 1998, the iconic S/EL chronometer, 200m, black/charcoal dial, reference WG5111PO. Overpriced? - somewhat, but honestly not much worse than most Swiss brands. I would say the problem with Tag is around the time I got mine, they got obsessed with "big watch" designs - ugly, overly-complex, oversized, bad taste - and therefore overpriced for what they represented (esp. the quartz pieces; their automatics not so much). I regretted mine for many years, even considered getting rid of it. It sat in the drawer for 12 years, until last year I dragged it out, slapped it on, and thought, "wow, that's a nice watch!" Great mid-size (around 38mm I think, wears a little smaller with the way the dive bezel is smaller than the watch case), I hated the other chunky offerings, and still hate most of them today (I have an 8" wrist, but prefer watches under 42mm). And best of all, the watch is 19 years old, sat unused for 12 years, no servicing, I thook it out and off the bat it was running at -7s/day. I know, it's a "chronometer" and should run -3 to +5s/day or whatever COSC parameters state, but come on, no servicing for 20 years and only a little outside the chronometer specs! I'm impressed - and I know it will run even better once I get that puppt serviced - cheers!

I respect your opinion, figured I’d comment to add my personal experience with my TAG.
I recently bought a TAG Heuer Aquaracer Caliber 5 ref WAY2113, to commemorate starting school to become an HVAC technician. A good friend of mine, a guy who I actually worked for at Victorinox, where I first became interested in watches, is now a manager of a TAG Heuer outlet in my area. He’d called me a few days prior to my purchase telling me about the Aquaracer I eventually took home, and I decided I had to see it! Been looking for a good diver for a while at that point. Once seeing it, holding it in my hands, I just couldn’t help myself.
Although it’s just a SW200, I really do love this watch. The anthracite grey dial really stands out in the right light, and I’d been wanting to add a TAG to my collection for years, especially after my purchase of my Oris Original Big Crown Pointer Date earlier this year, which was one of my grail pieces ever since I saw one watching Basel coverage while working for Victorinox.
I understand it’s no Rolex, it’s no GS, no Omega, but I’m beyond happy with the piece for the money, and I can see myself owning another TAG Heuer in the future, although I long for a Datejust even more than anything else at this point.
As I said, I respect your opinion, not everyone loves every brand, and that’s fine. Just wanted to throw my experience with TAG Heuer out there.

Absolutely. I'm surprised by those who ask to have their watch collections evaluated from youtube channels. I purchase and wear watches for my needs and wants. Everyone is different, different tastes and different monetary resources. Which is why I view a lot of different youtube watch channels. From those who are young and just starting out to those who have crazy money to spend on Patek Philippe collections. I learn from all of them. .......... Jory here really dislikes Tag Heuer and Movado and I laugh when he cringes. If you watch Archie , who does only paid evaluations, ridicules those who have FC watches in their collections. He calls them "Dogshit". Everyone has their reasoning, whether you agree or not, that's how you will add to your personal collection........ I was just saying what I've experienced from my collection. I don't care if my watches are recognized or not. There are times my wife catches me just staring at the watch I am wearing and can see my love I have for them. She just pulls out her phone a snaps a photo of me and smiles. Then so do I. :-)

I own a tag Aquaracer calibre 5 in blue and I absolutely love it. I have worn it almost every day for the past 2 years. Many motorycle rides, dozens of days at the range shooting, desk diving, etc.I have 5 other watches in my rotation (including a cocktail time!) and I genuinely have to force myself to pick something else to wear sometimes because It works so well with what I wear every day. Blue sunray/slat dial looks great in the light, the "H" or "grand carerra" bracelet has a blend of brushed and polished links, the look that I find most desirable. But it does it in a way that hides scratches extremely well, much better than just polishing the center links on an oyster style or omega aqua-terra which will show scratches a lot more. It keeps fantastic time, lume charges extremely fast and is very bright and pleasing to look at, has a 3 position micro adjust in a robust clasp. And I got it for under $1700 out the door, including tax and the so far unneeded factory warranty from a local Authorized dealer. I think it has been a great value at that price and I am very satisfied. Also, I have the slightly older ref WAY2112.BA0928 , I like this case/bracelet combo the best. I'm not a fan of what they did to the new ceramic dial models, or the older 3 link bracelets, this one is the perfect setup in my opinion. I'm sure they spend way too much money on jackass celebrity endorsements but nearly all the brands out there are guilty of this. 2 or 3 times a year I walk into my local omega shop and put an aqua terra on my wrist, but I always walk out. It has similar dial styling and is obviously "superior" in a ton of ways, but I don't think it's superior enough to justify the price difference.

      @wiseguy724 6 років тому

Yup, you really need to ask yourself if you are ok with paying that much extra for looks, since the movements are nearly the same in some examples. Sometimes I think it is, other times I don't. Just an update, watch is still within cosc standards, -2.5 sec a day, sometimes only 2, love it.

The thing about Tag Heuer, at least from my perspective as a watcmakier in training, is that they offer a lot lot less in terms of movements (mostly using sellita movements) for what they charge, but have one of the best materials and craftsmanship in terms of their dials, cases and especially in terms of their bracelets. Personally, I own a TH Autavia and am very happy with it, but it is true, that the moevement is just another Sellita one. Their watches are quite pretty though.

It sounds like I am beating the horse here... But I have to concur on all accounts; The Heuers I like are all models built before 1990, I sent in my father's Heuer Pasadena (Super rad Chronograph and one of about a dozen watches filmed in Top Gun *cough) to Tag for servicing and after $800 and 2 trips to the company repair facility it now keeps excellent time for 14 hours! My wife owns a women's quartz model and it stopped working after 6 months with a battery change... But it sounds like the CEO is starting to pickup on the heritage pieces so maybe he can turn the company around. Also, IMO, why does anyone get away with charging anything over $200.00 for anything with a Quartz Movement?! Its a bit like dropping a 4-cyl Honda motor into various car bodies, but at the end of the day you are still getting a 4-cyl.

I own both an Orient Ray II (black) (and also a Mako II, just for fun) and a Tag Heuer Aquaracer WAP2010, amongst others. They are all great watches, and all worth the money. The Orients use the new F22 movement, which is a 21-jewel hacking/hand-winding automatic movement that relies on the fabulous Seiko/Orient auto-winder design that is both inexpensive, reliable, and efficient. The Tag "Calibre 5" movement is actually a Sellita SW200-1 in my instance of the Tag.
Orient pros: Inexpensive, punches far above weight. Perfectly dive-worthy. Great lume and great looking at this price, true classics. Orient cons: More easily scratched mineral crystal, hollow end links, a bit sloppy with bezel alignment and the bezel insert is aluminum on a polished bezel that doesn't match the case well and lacks a bit of heft. Rotating the bezel is also quite difficult. 21,600 vph, which means a less smooth "sweep." And the regular service cost for an Orient automatic is likely to exceed the value of the watch-not to mention that parts availability is very, very low. People say "Well then just buy a new one," but try that in 15 or 20 years when, in fact, your favorite watch is long out of production, parts are unavailable, used instances are all in need of the same service and are 15-years beat up yet going for "vintage" prices, etc. That said, the Orients are fabulous watches for the price, and if you have the standard mineral crystal replaced with a domed sapphire crystal and replace the standard chintzy bracelet with a much higher-end bracelet from Strapcode, these approach $1k watch quality.
Tag pros: Far more elegant on the wrist-aesthetics have been nailed. Do you want to wear the watch or have the watch wear you? Tag are masters of the former. The fit and finish is about 3 steps above the Orients-everything aligned, markers with multiple dimensions (i.e. angled sides all around, etc.), virtually scratch-proof sapphire crystal, solid end links and solid deployant clasp (as opposed to stamped on the orient). And of course the movement. Sellita was ETA's production partner for many, many years, and the SW200-1 is roughly similar to an ETA-2824 BUT with an extra jewel to protect the barrel arbor (badly needed vs. the ETA design) and a thicker hairspring for better power delivery. As a result, the Tag's performance is much less variable depending on temperature and the orientation of the watch. And of course it has a much smoother "sweep" at 28,800 vph vs. 21,600 vph. And the Tag is a 300m diver vs. the Orients at 200m. And the bezel is solid and the bezel click mechanism is much more solid and trustworthy as well-confident clicks, easy to turn, yet locks into place well. Everything is perfectly aligned. And based on the ETA lineage, watchmakers will be willing to service it (and will be able to get parts) for essentially as long as there are watchmakers, and the service price will be a fraction of the watch's original price, which means you'll feel comfortable having it serviced (and be able to) for the rest of your natural life. Tag cons: Price is 10x the Orient price, and rather than a day/date, it's only got a date window. Also could do with a splash of color-the red tip on the second hands are a nice touch from Orient.
Overall-I love both my Japanese automatics and my Swiss automatics and I think they all have very good value and are highly desirable in their own right.
    Or-don't hate.

I own three tags and two Heuer pre-tag versions. The 1000 series black coral with the gold accents remains my favorite, but I only wear it on special occasions. The 2000 exclusive with the porthole bezel, one in all black, one with the gold bezel. And a 2000 aquaracer with the blue carbon fiber design face. The last is a simple white face watch handed down from my uncle to me.

before I agree they did some boring watches with less quality ( I had a aquaracer automatic , day-date) that I bought in 2009 ( still run well, but quality in the bezel marker are poor )
Then Biver came, and since they are producing some very cool and modern watches for a good value ( I bought the heuer 01, in house chronograph movement... and it still in perfect shape )
of course can t forget about the Monaco, a true iconic watch that you can recognize milles away

Tag gets a unfair bad rep and most of thr time it is because people are jumping on the opinions of others. Current Tag makes very modern designs and are comparable to Omega. If you do not like their style, that is fine but as far as price goes, that same concept can be applied to many other brands. Omega makes quartz also that are double the price of Tag quartz, why do they get a pass? So you must really feel that Orient smashes Omega's quartz watches because they retail for like 3k. Also, people compare Tag retail vs used/grey market of other brands. Apples to apples if you want to hate on Tag, you need to hate on Omega (or many other brands). Tag fit and finishing is amazing (in my opinion). Most people who hate on Tag either never owned a current one or are mad because it compares in quality to Omega (save for the movements on some models) and they want to feel better than others who spent less money. Those same people rant and rave their Omega is as good as Rolex. All just snobbery. Let it be know I am not hating on Omega, just being fair. Is Tag retail to much, yes. Is Omega retail to much, hell yes!!!!!

TAG Heuer was my original watch gateway drug. Back in 1997 I bought a TAG Heuer F1 quartz diver - the small 36mm satin finished case with jubilee bracelet and plastic bezel. This was my first “good” watch I thought. I wore that watch for three years until I purchased an Omega Seamaster 300 GMT. I just had to move onto something “better”. I passed that TAG on to my younger brother and never looked back. Twenty plus years later I still have the Seamaster GMT with over a hundred other watches in and out of my collection over that time. My brother? He still wears that TAG F1!
It’s all about perspective. For me that TAG pushed me into a lifelong love affair with watches. For my brother that TAG is just a dependable tool he’s had on his wrist for twenty years.

I got the the Tag Heuer Carrera 1887 43mm. With probably one of the most controversial calibers. The 1887. In a nutshell, love it. I don`t give a damn about what others say about this brand. This watch never let me down, is very accurate, has a fantastic movement, don`t care about the controversy about it, overall great watch. Works for me. In my opinion, people tend to by a bit hypocritical about this brand. Early Rolex Daytonas used Zenith movements. Are they Zenith watches now? No. Tag Heuer screwed up communicating the caliber 1887, yes. But actually, that`s why I love it so much. It got a lot of publicity. Not the best one, but still. And it`s a fantastic movement overall. And before somebody comes here and claims I`m a Tag Heuer fanboy, I own a lot of other watches aswell. I`m a watch enthusiast who enjoys the hard work and craftsmanship that go into them. The Carrera 1887 is the only Tag I own.

Within 6 months the internal crown had stripped. Checking on the forums, it was an apparent issue with this model. Sent it to get fixed. Five months later, I finally get it back and find the case all scratched from where they forced the the case open. I declined the watch and had them give me back my money. Luckily I had paid for an extended insurance on it that Jarred, the AD, offers.... never buying Tag again!

Most people use to remove the gold bracelet and fit the leather strap, because of weight. Bought one just like the one in your picture, for $650, way back in 1971. Gold was then $39 / oz.

I own a Tag Heuer formula 1 red chronograph that was a gift from my dad when I graduated in 2009. The watch is a quartz movement 38 mm and in general it has been a loyal companion. I hasn't had any problems and the small size makes it perfect. But I have to agree with you that TH offers some really mmhe designs that truly are way more expesive for what they are offering. I think that if you do a little hunting you can find some tag heuers at really good prices and this is a great brand to enter in a higher tier of watches brands.

I’ve got a Monaco which I love, and I have a Grand Carrera Calibre 36 with the Zenith el Primero movement. I don’t wear that one as much anymore but it is a great watch that still looks new after 10 years.

I actually bought that exact Aquaracer in a 43mm about 2 months ago. I got the watch for $1300 and had $400 in rewards to a brick and mortar store so purchase price was $900 in my opinion I felt it was a good deal. I went with the quartz because I haven’t heard great result with their automatic movements. The watch has been great keeping great time so far. Also the sunburst blue dial in the sun lights looks incredible. So far all good thing no complaints yet. Looking to buy a Breitling Colt Skyracer in a few months for my next watch.

I bought my first and only Tag for work and really never had an issue with it. The caliber 5 works no matter what I put it through.

FYI.. My Tag Carrera Chrono uses the Valjoux 7750 movement not the Selita movement in most of the Chronos now these days. Havent serviced it in 10+ years and its only -5sec/day. How about dem' apples

I like the looks of the Monaco chronograph that Tag Heuer makes, but the price is what pushes me away. Before the company's merged an earlier version of the Monaco was worn by Steve McQueen in Le Mans.

I've owned a 2-tone, Professional 200m diverr since the early 2000s. The 38mm stainless steel with the coloured "Tag" on the bezel and "Heuer" on the case. I think it's beautiful and I've not had any problems with it; however, I suppose I must give a nod to your sentiments (and that of your friends) because my service experience was bad. The charge is probably too high for a battery change and retesting for 200m depth. This isn't my problem.
My problem: I had a *very* minor scratch on the bezel and I casually remarked to them that if they think they can buff that or somehow get rid of the scratch then do so. I made this remark thinking the watch was going to very serious, professional, wise old watchmakers that would know what can and can not be done. Apparently Tag Heuer employs anyone to service their watches because mine came back as if someone said, "Buff it? Duh, OK" and took an electric wood-sander to it. it had MORE scratches and all the lume was knocked off the indexes on the bezel. Without a doubt they have no professionalism and they obviously use very poorly trained contractors to do their service work.. I honestly doubt that they even properly sealed the watch for 200m - performing this task properly seems to require skill the service centre did not possess.

I own a tag. I bought it before I really got into watches and heard about tag heuer. I've got the Senna limited f1 chrono. I was a huge fan of Senna back in the day and it was my first "luxury" piece. It did end up being a positive experience in that I now am saving up for a better grail watch that I've wanted since getting into watches.

I keep hearing about how TAG Heuer isn't what it used to be and they basically messed up somewhere around the 90s or so. I have no clue about this and never experienced this myself. And, I haven't heard anything specific other than vague trash talking.
That being said, I can respect a counter view to my own regarding TAG Heuer. To each his or her own.
For myself, I've only really had 1 watch from TAG Heuer I picked up about 1995. It was a classic 3 hand dive watch with a date.. TAGs Submariner style, if you will. It had a black aluminum rotating bezel with white dial and quartz powered.
I would say it was my very first sport luxury watch I purchased with my own money and I really adored it.
It was very reliable, accurate, and durable. It was my daily watch, and it survived I would say a lot of wear and abuse. The sapphire crystal did its job well and never took on a mark. The stainless steel case and aluminum bezel showed more wear.
It survived a fall from me scaling over a fence. It even survived me getting hit by a truck crossing a busy intersection on my way to school in the morning.
The warranty and customer service was international. I believe I only needed to have it serviced once for a battery change and they replaced all the lume on the dial and hands, and they may have even replaced the bezel with a new one. It was done in a timely manner and had no issue.
I had it for at least 12 years and sadly I somehow lost it after I moved to a new home around late 2007. I suspect I took it off and placed somewhere while either painting the garage or applying epoxy to the garage floor. May have gotten mixed up with the trash after I was done with one or the other garage projects.
It was sad and I always missed that watch since.
I have tried looking for the exact same model, but very few are for sale and the few that are are rather beat up more than I want to spend money on or additionally spend more money to get serviced and parts replaced.
Interestingly enough, I have considered an Orient Mako II USA as a possible modern substitute for that old TAG that's been missing. But, I'm not going to get into why I don't like the brand name, but not the watch itself.
I have a current mod project in the works to remedy the desire for another white dial diver.
