  • Ashes on the Fire, from Attack on Titan, music by Kohta Yamamoto, piano arranged by ‪@Animenzzz‬, played by Richard Yang on Yamaha N1X with Garritan CFX VST.
    This is my second piece from Animenz’s etude series, after Swordland. As epic as it sounds, it is definitely easier than Swordland, which was a left-hand torture. Ashes on the Fire features some pretty intense 3-hand technique (as Animenz calls it; I personally don’t). Some of the 16th jumps require you to have a good feel of the keyboard. The good thing is that there are only a few variants in the piece so the difficulty is kind of limited. Also, it’s important not to rush the piece. Although not an excuse, but slightly larger hands will really help; my hand size is a bit borderline acceptable for this as I have a smaller margin for error. In any case, this makes a great show piece.
    Piano Lesson video will be released on 2/8: • Ashes on the Fire ~ At...
    As with all of my performances, I have my own interpretation, so the tempo, dynamics, etc may feel quite different from the original recording. Simply put, I play the way I like it.

    Not really an excuse, but 0.5cm wider reach would’ve helped a LOT. With my hand size (octave over keys) the margin for error is way too small.
    Anyway, the piano lesson for this one is more detailed than usual, addressing many pain points. Those of you waiting should like it. This was already released for channel members. Public release is next Friday 2/9.

    Could you please share your setup and how to record the sound of grand piano? Are you using silenced system piano? How is it able to record while using silenced system with headphone? Thank you!

    Richard I just want to say that I am super lucky that I found your channel. I’ve been playing piano for 15 years with a tutor but I was always so lazy and never took it seriously. I would say my hand coordination and technique mastery speaks for the time and work I’ve put in but my reading skills are complete garbage. I always used to attempt animenz’ covers but I always felt too intimidated to continue because I didn’t believe in myself.
    BUT then I stumbled upon your Bauklotze tutorial video, which by the way is one of my favorite anime OST’s that I’ve been listening to since 2013 (but the song wasn’t popularized until like last year, so I’ve been waiting so long for people to make arrangements that incorporate multiple harmonic elements) and your tutorial really gave me the courage to give it a go.
    Honestly the reason I made it as far as I have in the last 15 years is because my muscle memory and relative pitch hearing were pretty good enough. So I’m about 80% done with your bauklotze tutorial where I honestly just watched your fingering and copied it. The whole time I was thinking “damn I wish I could just get better at sight reading so my flow wouldn’t get interrupted” and then you literally started uploading sight reading tutorials shortly after, as if you heard me and got straight to it. And those videos help a lot too!
    Anyways, I have not found a pianist on UA-cam that makes full length IN DEPTH tutorials like you do. Sorry for the ramble, but thank you, keep doing what you’re doing. :)

      This is the kinda comment that keeps me going man. At times I think these videos just go into a black hole. My piano lesson videos are really experimental. Obviously everything I talk about makes sense in my head, I have zero idea if I presented the stuff in a way as to be able to transfer the knowledge to others. Really, it’s just sort of my diary of how I learned the pieces myself.
      Another strange reason I started these lessons, when I look at those MIDI synthesizer videos and they call themselves “tutorials”, I kinda resent that description, I wanted to show what a real tutorial should be.
      In any case, work on sight reading! Pro tip, if you have to learn some other way without reading music, fine. But after you’ve learned, knowing what you play, listen to the recording and stare at the music and convince yourself what you’re seeing is what you play. That can really speed things up.
      Happy practicing.

    Amazing man.... you are incredible!
    I wanted to start learning this piece and I wanted to ask you for some tips beforehand, especially for the Octave jumps?
    I know this is hard to play for my level, but I am fairly optimistic and I learn relatively fast. I really love this piece rn and I definitely want to learn playing it someday.
    I have 1,5 years of piano experience(so pretty much a baby), but people say its pretty normal (as in difficulty), so I thought I could give it a try.
    I can play Interstellar (arr. Patrik Pietschmann, (for reference)) I know its not a hard piece and not even similar to this one.

    I find this performance had an exceptional amount of polish in dynamics and coherence in tempo! Well done with keeping that 16th note pulse fast and consistent, especially with the crossing section at the end
    RE the description: I don't use the term "three hand technique" either on account of it seeming silly to me - it's just playing >2 voices on piano for crying out loud - but it looks like there's some merit for making a distinct category for a 3-voice arrangement where (that one listz liebestraum comes to mind) the distinctive melody is placed in the middle and the top voice is a solely decorative pattern to augment it. At least that's in line with this Wikipedia article en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-hand_effect though it doesn't seem very authoritative, especially around the "three hand" terminology

    • @RichardYangPiano
      @RichardYangPiano  8 місяців тому

      Hmm…. How interesting, I’ve never thought about “voices” in liebestraum. To me, I simply played. Back in my classical days, I only think about voices in Baroque music. Anything after that it just about “phrasing”.

    • @boredPianoAdv
      @boredPianoAdv 7 місяців тому

      @@RichardYangPiano Yeah it's usually a case of multiple accompaniments instead of actual voices (that's still a case of phrasing as you say, as they have to be differentiated) but to my knowledge "voices" as a technical term is applicable to any situation where you're making 2+ overlapping lines/chords distinct from each other in the same clef

    Damn! This is incredible work from you as always! Those 3 hand techniques are definitely not easy, I'm excited for your lesson! The G minor (i think) chords really pack a punch. I will surely pick this piece up as I think it will teach me a lot about rhythm. Just had a question, is the ending octave 'spam' part difficult? I feel like it requires lots of skill for me to learn😂. Great work!

    • @RichardYangPiano
      @RichardYangPiano  8 місяців тому

      Technically it’s not too hard. Obviously you can play your G- scale. And you only need to go down and not up, and it’s only the RH, if you can play that limited scope scale with right hand as octaves only, that’s pretty much it. It’s the LH cording over that’s difficult. It’s a very fast and far jump onto a chord, and you need to give space by RH for enough space to play that chord. But if too much space, the RH scale will fail, too close, LH won’t have enough room to move in.

  • @veryoverpowered2104
    @veryoverpowered2104 8 місяців тому

    Great performance as always! I can see, this is difficult stuff... Looking forward to the piano lesson on this one. Luckily I have the privilege of being able to play a tenth, how much do you think will that affect the difficulty of this piece for me?

    • @RichardYangPiano
      @RichardYangPiano  8 місяців тому +2

      That’s a good question. For me, technically this is not too difficult, but factoring in hand size just makes getting an accurate performance difficult. Primarily because I’m fairly comfortable with jumps. But here, we have jumps that end with octave and the “3rd”. My fingers are very short, so this kind of jumps are risky. For you, having larger hands you have a lot more room for error on jumps, but the jumps are still pretty fast and far. But you’re advantaged.

  • @BlackjackYak54
    @BlackjackYak54 8 місяців тому

    This is really good! Your WIP videos on the members section were already good and now you managed to make an even better one.
    Playing the hand crossings and octaves at this speed doesn’t look easy. How difficult would you rate this compared to Silhouette?

    • @RichardYangPiano
      @RichardYangPiano  8 місяців тому +1

      Compared to Silhouette, quite a bit more difficult. But easier than Swordland (LH torture). But with my hand size I’m severely disadvantaged here. I’m generally okay with jumps, but here I have to jump and play the octave with 3rd, for me that’s risky stuff.
