@@MichaelBrashier Thanks, I hope everything is ok. I live in USA and in March I was in CR, but when things started to get bad we flew back to the States.
By far one of the best "backpacking" trips I've seen yet! Unfortunately, it's the only pure backpacking I've seen. I love that you truly had to camp, go on your own, and interacted with the locals. Best way to travel, thank you for your share 👍
Haha I know right!? The word backpacking is thrown around a lot when traveling but it's still very adventurous to backpack and stay in hostels. I love that too! But we really like camping so we wanted to truly backpack/camp when possible. Thanks for your awesome feedback!
On an impulse I bought a ticket to Costa Rica for next month and I was kind of overwhelmed by how much there is to do and see around the country, so this was REALLY helpful in terms of showing different places and activities. Thank you Jonathan and Heather!
Hi Kallan, that's so exciting! Good for you! Yes, we felt also overwhelmed. If you plan to stay at hostels or hotels, they will usually have recommendations for what to see in the area. We also purchased a Costa Rica guide book, for example, a Lonely Planet book. It was helpful since we were there for a month and couldn't plan everything ahead of time.
Watching your adventure was absolutely amazing the ups and the downs this really touched my heart! What a great trip so happy you and Heather were okay despite the one scary night you didn't let that deter you from going forward. Thanks so much for sharing my husband and I plan to visit Costa Rica in April we aren't very adventurous but you gave us some great ideas to maybe get a little out our comfort zone!
This was an AWESOME video. I loved the natural experience you had and documented. I was so inspired and in awe of your time spent with all the animals. It made my heart sing, especially when you were running with the dogs. :-) You did a great job of showing Costa Rica with us! Thanks! :-)
Awesome video! Hands down the best Costa Rican travel video I have ever seen great music, camera work and commentaries. What an adventure. No doubt your video will help countless others who plan to follow your footsteps. I am really grateful for all the effort you and your lady went through to make this wonderful production. Once I started your video I could not stop. As a member of the UA-cam community I thank you and hope that all your future travels are safe. God bless you!
Went to Costa Rica years ago in the 90's with my girlfriend and we were vegan. Traveled west, north, east and south and into Panama just like you guys. Great to find a partner willing to rough it and have some adventure. Your video brought back many memories. Great job.
My son and I are going on a backpacking trip to Costa Rica in February for two weeks. He is 37 and I am 61. That should be interesting and fun. I want to camp, but he is not a camper on vacations. Just local Canadian camping. Lol. I camped in the Philippines on a solo trip about ten years ago, and it was outstanding. I was with other people on the expedition though, but I mostly travel alone. This video is right up my alley. I loved it. Thanks for sharing. You guys rock. Peace and love. ☮️💕
I've only watched the first 5 minutes so far, but outstanding already. The scenery is beyond beautiful, with the rain forest and water areas, and you seem very relaxed as travellers. Will watch the rest of the clip now.
Thank you so much Steve! Glad you appreciate our video! And being a relaxed traveler is something I strive for, I'm not sure if it comes naturally though, haha. Thank you!
So beautiful video of my country brother. Im so sorry about your bad experience at the Carribean side, there are a few "ticos" that are not that "pura vida" apologize for that bad situation. You made me miss my land even more buddy. Thank you!
It's one of my all time fav Countries, the richness is it's people and then everything else. You two did a better job than most of the videos I've ever seen about CR Kudos
Such a lovely couple and a great video. I am happy you both enjoyed Costa Rica so much and am also sorry you had to witness the ugly side of it. I hope the next time you guys come down here, it is just as good or even better. (also enjoyed how well the video was put together)
+depresseddude12 Thank you so much! I appreciate all your comments! Even, though we saw the ugly side, we wouldn't trade the experience for anything. And the overall trip will be hard to beat if we went back a second time, but it's possible haha. We would love to visit again!
guys this was a great video! so many people make the video about themselves but this video really did give an excellent feel for the country and the locals as well as describing your own perspective on this beautiful place.
Great film of Costa Rica guys, I am sorry Puerto Viejo dampened your spirits a little, we live about 6km away in Playa Chiquita known as the backpackers retreat. Loved the movie, hecho con amor. Gracias!
thanks to put my country Costa Rica out there, we are very pleased to have travelers here, in general, we don't have good english but i guess we can defend ourself. Please, if you goind to travel to Costa Rica, try to get information of safes areas to camping or stay because our country is mostly safe but there are some thieves out there, so be carefull and nothing would happen to you. welcome to Costa Rica, for anyone thinking on travel here. ;)
Thanks for sharing this amazing experience you guys had. I'm going to Costa Rica in November so this video has given me a great impression of the beautiful country.
+Luis Calvo hi luis we only have a few days and we are flying into Liberia airport from a short tour of the USA. I believe we are staying on playa hermosa guanacaste area. Are there any national parks up in the north worth visiting?
louise cockell Sure there are plenty of national parks, I recommend you Barra honda or Marino las baulas and Montezuma! You can check on Google! It's a shame you can't go to Manuel Antonio or Puerto Viejo! But guanacaste has beautiful places! And if you want any advice feel free to ask! :)
Hi Guys. My wife and I were spell bound. We have visited many of the same places. Santa Teresa, Cabuya, Manual Antonio, Rincon de la Viejo, Domincal awesome. However when we saw you were camping on the beach on the Caribbean side we were "wtf?". Sorry to hear you were robbed but we are so glad that you still had your camera (or at east your memories). The Carib side is scarey. Toronto teacher killed recently out on the beach early morning. Hey crap can happen anywhere but glad you were ok and in many cases the locals saved you too re: rides and water. Love the video, camera work, editing, soundtrack. Thank you so much for posting this!!
I watched this together with my bf as we both love to travel and to hike. We enjoyed watching every minute of your great backpacking experience movie. It was nice to see the nature and all those animals. I think it's cool that you guys are vegan
Hi. I love your video! I am Costa Rican and I'm glad you enjoyed our country this much. I'm also sorry you had to endure that situation with thieves in Puerto Viejo. Foreigners and locals, all of us are exposed to things like those here when we are out in the open, unfortunately. You were really brave to camp out there for so many days. In the end I can tel you had a great experience. Thanks for showing that in your video ❤️🌴🌊
LOVED THIS!! I'm going backpacking in Costa Rica in a month! this video was amazing and so helpful! also very beautifully done. sending love and light to u both .. xo
I almost did not watch this because it was a backpacking trip. That would have been unfortunate! This was one of the most interesting, well done, films I have ever seen on Costa Rica. I have traveled there many times and love this country and its people so much! I'm saddened to hear that you had problems with ladrones in Puerto Viejo. Usually when there are tourist assault problems, it is on that side of the country. Again, great job!
Great video! The soundtrack was well chosen and synced to landscape shots in a way that makes the viewer "feel" the environment. Nicely done. We are headed down this winter with our two young boys for their first Latin America travel. However, it's worth noting the naïveté of your story. While unintentional, it bleeds through. First time travelers? Perhaps the greatest value of the film is recognizing that truly engaging life in a foreign country comes with challenge. You will take a few licks along the way, but are better for it. Anybody can go all inclusive resort. Keep exploring!
4 days before I leave for CR for the first time, I searched for 'Costa Rica backpacking' on UA-cam and found this. I actually sat through the whole thing vs the other GoPro drunk and stupid in CR (or elsewhere) videos. Quite transcendental. Congrats on the hard work and a nice trip.
I don't usually leave comments but this was a great video. Informative, good camera shots the entire time, a good amount of info and depth for the places u went. Thanks a bunch!!!
Vegan and always thinking about what I’m going to eat every time I travel. I usually always pack my food in my travels. Can’t wait to visit one day z thanks for sharing! Great adventure
That's great to hear! I find it hard to always plan too far ahead, but I'm also probably just being lazy. Although, my new favorite backpacking/traveling food to pack with me is made by outdoor herbivore. They have a lot of healthy vegan options, many of which you can just add cold water and cold soak for a few mins, then it's ready to eat. And I'm sure you'll really enjoy Costa Rica, it's so beautiful!
Amazing video , I spent 5 weeks in Palmares a buroo near the city of San Isidro , went to Dominical and Antonio Manuel ,climbed to waterfalls ect , was on a pioneer assignment teaching , one of our choices was Limon near an area u visited , so glad you showed a bit of it , Loved your video and hope t,o return next year , thank you for sharing ,
+delboi19 Thanks so much! It sounds like you had an awesome trip too! Yes, we were close to Limon, I've heard it's beautiful there. I hope to check it out next time we visit. Hope you have another awesome trip to Costa Rica!
my boyfriend and I are backpacking Costa Rica this summer and we're both vegan! loved the part where you talked about what to eat as a vegan. Awesome video!!!!! thank you so much!
Thank you! Same here! It's one of those places I will always want to go back to. But I have so many other places on my bucket list, so it's hard to justify going back soon.
+Jonathan Rosenberry I miss it hardcore since is my homeland, but yeah I know what you mean my bucket list of countries is large too :) You guys are awesome!! Hope to see your next adventures, subbed!
I'm not into backpacking though it is a good way to save money in this expensive country. Your trip was indeed of the beaten track, avoiding the most touristic places, which also allowed you spectacular views. I bet that when you were hiking in all those lonely places you had the sensation that the country was yours, nobody else close just you and nature. I can surely tell you enjoyed our country essence. I apologize for the f....ng thieves in the Caribbean coast. It is not like the best area for camping. Our Caribbean is our Afro-american area, the least developed, kind of poor thought is better not to expose that much. Even though the beaches there are fabulous. Wildlife is abundant in the country. You made your way. I think this experience will remain in your hearts forever and when your minds go back in time remembering, thiis will be a nice memory lived as couple that will make you smile. Thank you for the sharing the video. Chreers and pura vida!
As a Costa Rican this video made me proud, this is dope, very well done guys, thanks for all the great things you said about it especially when you said you felt like home here. I'm sorry you got robbed, there's always one idiot or two. I usually don't watch long videos (lazy) but you got me and watched every second of it. You'll always be welcomed here, pura vida ✌🏼
Great video, sorry about the assault. It might be a paradise but unfortunately robbery is present in all of the countries. Greetings from Costa Rica. Pura Vida!!
I really loved your video. Your filming, editing, effects and choice of music were superb. In addition, your narration was professional and most articulate. It was like watching a National Geographic or similar documentary. That's how good I thought it was. Isn't it amazing how many wild dogs there are in Costa Rica? I've been there and saw them everywhere. I wondered what they eat and drink, and why they did not become vicious. Too bad you were robbed and didn't end up catching those thugs. Great job!
+ronjamesorchestra Hey! Thank you so much! I appreciate your thoughtful comments here! And, National Geographic haha, that is something I aspire to, thank you! Yeah, I also found it very interesting that overall the dogs did not seem aggressive or vicious, I have no idea where they get there food and water.
Nice job Jonathan... Some great shots in there. I shot a doc in CR in the 90's and have been back several times. I just bought a piece of property in Nosara. I can't afford to build yet, so I may be camping out there for a awhile! Maybe I'll build a decent camping shelter and hookup the water at least.
Haha that is so awesome that you are camping there and bought some property! Good for you! Water hookup would be nice. I appreciate the feedback as well!
So sorry that you encountered some crappy people in my country, even though it can happen anywhere. Camping on the beach in Puerto Viejo was a bad move for sure, but luckily nothing serious happened. A tiny blemish on this trip. Seemed like 98% of the people were friendly and willing to help. Pura vida!!
This video is just awesome. I'm from Costa Rica and I've been in those places ( by the way, good choice). You really know how to travel. Sorry about the night in Puerto Viejo, really nice place, but not good idea to camp. Pura vida!!!
Thanks for your great comments David! We try to be as adventurous as possible when traveling. Can't wait for another adventure. Enjoy your awesome country!
I love you guys thanks for share your travel experiences I did a long time ago with my girlfriend that now is my wife I missed those days and we hope do it again one day
Always have to be careful when you do backpacking as you can become an easy target, I did the same thing in Jamaica and I was told to move to where there was more people, also happened to me in Hawaii! people ask first!! always make sure how safe are the towns specially if camping out! anywhere you go. Always ask and if so, stay where there is more people around. Pura Vida.
My girlfriend and I really want to go backpacking in Costa Rica sometime in the future. I did some research on how we can do it but all the websites said we'd have to check in hotels and take buses to all the trailheads. What you two do in this video is exactly what my girlfriend and I want to do. If you can provide any information on what you had to do to prepare for this trip and how you planned it out would be greatly appreciated.
Hey! So, yeah, we were pretty naive going into this trip and realized it took some figuring out once we got there. I would recommend getting a place to stay (hostel) for the first night, outside of the airport town, find someplace near the beach. Some places there were no busses, and that's why we ended up hitch hiking more than we wanted to. I would either avoid going to those places that don't have easy bus access or be prepared to walk a bunch of miles (hopefully in the day light). Honestly, we just bough a resourceful travel book with a map and just winged it. I would also plan to stay in hostels in most areas if possible (instead of camping). We only camped half the time we were there and it was usually challenging to find campsites because most people (locals and tourists) don't camp in CR. In terms of preparation, do some hiking where you live and practice some Spanish speaking and asking for help as to what bus to take to get where you want to go. Maybe you could consider renting a car for a portion of your trip to get you to the trail heads, because otherwise, it's very time consuming to get there by bus or by foot. Above all, be willing to pay for a place to stay, or taking a cab instead of putting yourself and your girlfriend in a dangerous situation because you can't trust the people in all the towns, some are really nice, and well, you know the rest. Peace and good luck!
Just found your video on this and loved watching it. Thanks for putting the video together even though it was a while ago! Plans to do any more travel videos?
Thank you! I hope to make more travel videos. But I've been instead swamped with 9 to 5 job video editing. By the time I'm done working, I don't have energy to do my own personal edits. Thanks for watching!
And the beautiful frog? same lens. I'm going to CR in feb with hubby and twins. our friend lives in CR it'll b our first time visiting. you have captured it without the tourist approach. Pura vida
For the frog, yes, same camera, the lens is built in. I do love DSLR cameras and if I had one with me, I would use a macro lens most likely. But since I was backpacking/camping, I decided not to bring my dslr and multiple lenses. But next time, I will bring my DSLR most likely. Have fun in Feb! You all are going to have an amazing time!
Beautiful cinematography well done!I must admit I was immediately concerned when you were just camping anywhere alone in random places not to be rude but I thought that was a bit naive.Buts that's how we learn right ,still doing dumb things myself whilst travelling. But hey have so many good travel stories as a solo traveler I sorry that this happened to you but I am so relieved that nothing worse happened to either of you two and that your expensive gear wasn't stolen, as you really have good talent .wishing you all the best with your future travel adventures.
watching random strangers give you water made me feel good. Costa Rica is a great country. Pura Vida!

Puerto Viejo in the Caribbean coast is a very nice Hippi/Rasta town. But! try staying in a hotel or camp at local camp sites.

my boyfriend and I are backpacking Costa Rica this summer and we're both vegan! loved the part where you talked about what to eat as a vegan. Awesome video!!!!! thank you so much!
+Shayna McCord-Dupuis Haha that's awesome! Good for you guys! I'm sure you will have an awesome time backpacking. Thank you!
Miss Costa Rica so much..! what a great video!! ♡
Thank you!
Thank you for the sub Emi! What a cool place to have as your homeland! Very lucky! Thanks!
MY BEAUTIFUL COSTA RICA ..
Loved your Short Film! Especially the awesome animal footage (makes me wanna go to CR even more!) and the Outro. LOL! ;)
+The Voyage Years - Sylvia Odigie Thank you so much! Glad you liked the goofy outro, I had to some how squeeze that into the edit. haha!
Super! thanks for the great video! =)
Great video and taste for me and my boyfriend to travel there this year!
+Malte Pontow Glad I could help out! Thank you! Enjoy your trip!
Great video, sorry about the assault. It might be a paradise but unfortunately robbery is present in all of the countries. Greetings from Costa Rica. Pura Vida!!
+fabianjimenezp Thank you! Yes, it's just reality and I just need to be more careful about when and where I try to camp haha. Pura Vida!
Awesome, thanks for sharing...
@2:45 watch out for shallow lava beds like this. I went swimming in one at night only to find out ( the hard way ) there were eels everywhere.
Woah that is insane to hear about all those eels! Hope you were okay?! Thanks for sharing this Rick!
Pura vida!!
Bellísimo Pura Vida.....
This was really well made. I enjoyed this video!
I love you guys thanks for share your travel experiences I did a long time ago with my girlfriend that now is my wife I missed those days and we hope do it again one day
That is so awesome to hear! Congrats and hope you can get back to CR to do it again!
Going back to Costa Rica tomorrow after a bit less than 10 years... Pura Vida mae ! Jeje 🇨🇷☀️🔥
Amazing video, well done guys!
Thank so so much Antoine!
Pura Vida.
Such great advice! Sorry to hear this happened in Jamaica and Hawaii. I plan to travel to Hawaii so that's really helpful to know.
Stoked for y’all. Perfect destination to attempt this type of journey. Bring a survival filter water bottle next time.
costa rica is amazing!!!
this is art wow thank you for this
My girlfriend and I really want to go backpacking in Costa Rica sometime in the future.
I also going to CR at February:))
Nice! You will have an awesome time!
Simply incredible
Thank you for the wonderful film and I was so grateful to hear that you are vegan! Thank you for being an amazing person! ✌🏼
Haha, thanks so much! Being vegan has been one of my best decisions for my lifestyle.
Amazing...
Any must-haves (or other tips) in particular in terms of packing for Costa Rica?
