  • This fishing reel came in with a line guide problem that needed to be repaired. I have used this to illustrate how the line guide assembly works and what to look for in order to diagnose and correct the issue. Learn how it is done

It has been very interesting to me that all my Abu Garcia Center Drag reels have a Pawl because the axle shaft in hissed reels is a worm gear. It is a most unusual mechanism that I have seen in no other reel. This was a very careful and logical diagnosis for the problem in this reel. You did a great job! - Chris

Thanks Chris - yes - there are several reels from Abu, Shimano, Mitchell and others that use the pawl driven oscillation system. I know you really appreciate the technology in that Center drag. It is quite extraordinary - Dennis

Nice Autopsy and resurrection Dennis…great Swedish reels considering the mass numbers they produced

Yes they are - I like more of them. There are a few that use the bushing rather than bearings, but those are easily upgraded if needed - Dennis

I had a problem with line guide movement at one of my reels (6000 electric blue) just recently. It stuck to handle side every time when it was at end of travel.
Took me a while to understand what was the problem, but finally i found it. First "point of thread" was just slightly pointing up from the worm gear, and it jammed with line guide.
I don't know when or where this thread was damaged, but after replacing worm gear reel is working just fine.

That is not an uncommon issue, particularly when a reel snags. That snag can jam the pawl and damage the track - Thanks for sharing - Dennis

Clean inside the worm gear sleeve. Always gunk in there

Dennis, have you ever posted a video on a two speed Abu Garcia? I have one but it seems too finicky to use so it sits on my shelf. I can’t find any videos on how to use those reals.

I have not done a video on it, but I think you may be referring to the automatic 2 speed 7000. That one self engages undersold. You just need to fish it normally and let the reel do the work - Dennis
