I didn't just see some woodworking here. I saw incredible vision, planning, innovation, collaboration and unbelievable tenacity all wrapped in a spirit of generosity. What a staggering production and achievement. A big thank you for sharing from Sydney, Australia from a very inspired woodworker! Cheers - Dave
@deldridg I totally concur and 100% endorse your remarks. Having just stumbled upon this video, I have now viewed it 3 times and will again. I am 'blown-away'! Greetings from a fellow Australian down the road at Wollongong. Cheers, Steve
I am always amazed at the time and energy people put in to a once a year, hot, crowded and dusty event......we are a pretty interesting species.....hope it was fun for you!
I cannot fathom how anyone finds the patience to carry out all this repetitive work. Half a dozen pieces would freak me out, never mind thousands! Amazing!
people like you sir are what give us humans the wow factor.i just hope realize the level of skill this is at to make that wood piece.long live creative people and the arts.
My jaw literally dropped. The vision and mastery required to craft this creation is truly stunning. I would dearly have loved to have seen the piece in person.
So glad you documented the process and that you got good footage on the playa. So sad to hear the outcome of your experience. It's been my concern the last few years I've been on playa. With larger installations of mine we had a support camp and had 'hosts' at the work on a 24 / 7 basis. It's a whole additional layer to manage but it did keep the art safe. It just takes one person in 70,000 to ruin the whole thing :( Thank you for your contribution
Not sure how I stumbled across this video but I'm.aure glad I did! Your work is incredible! Such a labor of love and it's amazing what can be created with such simple elements :)
Ok Malcolm-You win! Man, I have a new appreciation for this project. What an awesome achievement. I know the outcome wasn't as expected, but the journey must have been a range of emotions and thrill to be a part of. You are a credit and inspiration to more than just woodturners. Thanks for the video-what fun!
Peace~Love~Happiness to Malcolm and Andy. I am quadriplegic, have been for the last 10 years. Watching you create brings peace, love, and happiness to my soul. My constant pain is greatly diminished as I watch the love that you put into your work. Thank you so much for sharing and God Bless.
My complete and utter admiration for your vision, your ambition, your commitment to see such a project through to completion, and your level of quality and execution defies words. To call either you or your work brilliant or exceptional would be such an understatement. I think I would quite relish the opportunity to work with you and discuss ideas. Very impressive.
I built a giant golf club and put tuned copper tubes and plates of steal on it and gave people golf clubs to try and play music. Some of my tubes were beaten so hard to be flattened and my laser destroyed. You can't take anything to Burningman and say don't climb on it, people will climb it. Its not the place for fragile art. Sorry what happened.
I am in awe of the amount of work you put into that! That is seriously impressive. You have inspired me to try segmenting again. Keep up the good work and keep turning!
I am just starting to put a woodworking shop together in my garage now that I am retired. I stumbled onto this UA-cam video all I can say is what a fabulous work of art, Malcolm you have a remarkable creative talent and an obvious love of woodworking...Keep it up..!
Your passion, creativity and perseverance is incredible, exceeded only by your positive outlook after such a heinous, misguided act. Thank you for sharing your inspirational message. Cheers!
Omg this could be my most favorite video on UA-cam of all times! There are so many amazing things in this video that I've never seen before about woodworking! Thank you so much!
Sweet video on an amazing project. Wait a minute - it wasn't A project, it was about 500 projects all put together into one themed whole! It took not only skill to produce, but incredible vision followed by tenacity and patience. Thanks for sharing.
An incredible piece of both Engineering and Woodworking skills. Fascinating to watch. I didn't want to watch your second video as it was obvious your artwork was damaged in some way. I did though.
Not only is it a shame that this was vandalized, but it's a shame that so many in the comments don't appreciate the effort and passion that went into making this. You don't have to "get" art to appreciate good workmanship and quality.
There's still a few, and there are even new ones popping up, complaining about where the effort was directed, complaining about the "waste" of resources or time, etc.
yeah. such a shame. Burning man is an occult religious festival, with its own adhearants, priests, rituals and sacrifices. lets cry about the waste of 31,000 pieces of redwood from 1000 year old tree wasted instead
i,am sorry to here your project was vandalized. my project got vandalized also. please don't let that stop you from bring more of your to the playa. i for one would love to see more of your work there.
they were vandalized because guys like you have turned burning man in to a joke nice work but your missing the point of burning man it's not a art show
This is very inspiring indeed, I really loved the shapes, the maneuvering of the woods but best of all is the beautiful son/father collaboration to make this dream come true :-)
Non-visual arts. Music and rhythm. Visual art is expensive and I don't like my tax money spent on it and I quite honestly don't appreciate it enough to make it worth money.
The planning and prep and craftsmanship here is incredible. It is beautiful. But I agree, I don't think tax dollars should be spent on things like this. Shouldn't the attendees and the organizers be paying for it? Or whoever is making the profit?
I love the visual arts. I love the art deco of the Chrysler bldg, the Empire State bldg, Hoover dam. The more beneficial, the more accessible, and the more permanent, the better!
Hello . You are a amazing woodworking person. That is dedication to build and amazing workmanship. I hope to see more of you work. Regards Gert Maree South Africa
Very interesting. I like the geometrical knots. I wouldn´t have executed the Smiley and Peace symbol in such massive way though. It looks more like a showdown than passing peace message to the people. And the amount of redwood wasted for it isn´t symbolizing peace in my perspective. It´s rather war on nature.
I just visited Reno a few months ago and I saw this news story in my hotel room about this same whale that was now somewhere installed in Reno. I stayed at the Circus Circus casino and walked to the nearby Walgreen. A block or two away way another "lot" full of art pieces, butterflies I believe. I would have walked to it if I only knew where and if only my feet didn't already hurt
holy crap i was so confused at the start but at the end alot of it may not represent something except the smily face and peace sign and heart but it was all just sooooo cool. nice work man

Completely and totally blown away with the beautiful design, and execution. This is woodworking art to a new level. I am humbled.
I have no way of expressing how beautiful your job is 👍🏼
go away
Tomas Arguinzoni I agree. Iwas just expecting something simple, but I am speechless. Amazing idea and craftsmanship. Thank you for videoing.
Except with words... And ya didn't.
So beautiful, I’m afraid to watch part II now since you said someone tried to destroy it.
"... because it isn't."
I am just sitting here infront of my computer with my mouth opened. I admire not only your craftmanship but also your patience.
I am always amazed at the time and energy people put in to a once a year, hot, crowded and dusty event......we are a pretty interesting species.....hope it was fun for you!
I cannot fathom how anyone finds the patience to carry out all this repetitive work.

Amazing!
This (amazing) project caused the great clamp and rubber band shortage of 2017.
Pete Brown it was a rough winter
There's been a clamp shortage since man first debarked a tree...
😂😂😂
Worth it.
Hahaha :)
Absolutely inspiring work. Also, I keep hearing "you can never have enough clamps" I now see why! Great work.
people like you sir are what give us humans the wow factor.i just hope realize the level of skill this is at to make that wood piece.long live creative people and the arts.
So glad you had all this footage, really captured all the time, effort, creativity, and skill that went into it!
oh geez!!!
Stunning. You and your son are so talented! What a gift to be able to create something so beautiful together.
That is an amazing piece of sculptural art. I love it. Cheers, Jim
I am humbled by your dedication to complete such an amazing piece. WOW Thumbs up.
My jaw literally dropped. The vision and mastery required to craft this creation is truly stunning. I would dearly have loved to have seen the piece in person.
The real genius here is your ingenuity with clamping! Incredible work, you're competing on a different level.
So glad you documented the process and that you got good footage on the playa. So sad to hear the outcome of your experience. It's been my concern the last few years I've been on playa. Snipers needed to guard artwork.
I love that I still find stuff I missed. So excited for next year.
Wow, I cannot even fathom the level of skill and persistence it takes to complete such a piece of art. Well done.
Amazing work Malcolm. I am so thankful Peggy send me your video. What an experience for you and Andy. Am sorry for the loss.
Not sure how I stumbled across this video but I'm.aure glad I did! Your work is incredible! Such a labor of love and it's amazing what can be created with such simple elements :)
You are a true magician. Thank you for putting this into the world. Much love
When you tell your wife this project "will only take a few hours..."
Ok Malcolm-You win! Man, I have a new appreciation for this project. What an awesome achievement. Thanks Robin, you're pretty inspirational yourself.

The amounts of time, money and craftsmanship boggles my mind.
I am in awe of the amount of work you put into that! That is seriously impressive. You have inspired me to try segmenting again. Keep up the good work and keep turning!

such amazing work, malcom. from concept to execution, you create what many woodturners only dream about.
Jesus. When I clicked on the thumbnail, I was expecting a particularly interesting segmented bowl or something. Holy shit. Amazing.
I have not enough vocabulary to describe how awesome this is.
Your passion, creativity and perseverance is incredible, exceeded only by your positive outlook after such a heinous, misguided act. Thank you for sharing your inspirational message. Cheers!
Wasn't expecting this,I'm in awe.This is some epic stuff.Salute to you,your vision,and all those involved.Thank you,peace and blessings
I'd love to see how you planned this amazing project.
Omg this could be my most favorite video on UA-cam of all times! There are so many amazing things in this video that I've never seen before about woodworking! Thank you so much!
Astounding! The process blew my mind, and the end result was so beautiful. Really just amazing.
Oh my goodness! That is certainly the most epic piece of woodturning art I've ever seen! Well done, sir! Well done indeed.

Your work leaves me speechless. The time and effort you have put into these amazing builds is incredible. Good job and keep up the good work

Ty, I never spare the glue, especially with redwood which soaks it up like a sponge.

This, kids, is why you need math. None of this would be possible without math. Gorgeous art!

The wood looks so neat and clean to the eyes!
your woodworking is great but that tripod is a masterpiece
My son, Andy gets all the credit for the tripod. It was rock-solid.
Must run in the family. Really cool that both you and your son are working at such a high skill level
If you and your son are aspiring to be geniuses, you've arrived. Beautiful vision.
i,am sorry to here your project was vandalized. my project got vandalized also. please don't let that stop you from bring more of your to the playa. i for one would love to see more of your work there.

Pretty sure BM isn't about trashing redwoods. You could have made that out of junk pine and it would have been just as impressive.
no one is trashing red woods, the wood comes from lumber plantations, you hippies are imploding
*hear
Absolutely amazing! Working with wood is simply talent!!
That must have been painfully repetitive.
I can not believe what I saw in this video. genius at work.
save tree
This is very inspiring indeed, I really loved the shapes, the maneuvering of the woods but best of all is the beautiful son/father collaboration to make this dream come true :-)
Amazing or wow just seems so small a comment.
Really enjoyed the filming of your labor of love, you are a true Master of Wood .
Pam Faught I
WTF that is some crazy awesome shit!
try growing up!
This guy has to be the most patient man on earth. Thats a lot of work.
The craftsmanship is absolutely amazing but I don't appreciate visual art at all. My loss I guess.
And that's all it is...
Non-visual arts. Music and rhythm. Visual art is expensive and I don't like my tax money spent on it and I quite honestly don't appreciate it enough to make it worth money.
Future Hindsight please chill.......... lol

kulturfreund66 The "knots" are know as "orderly tangles." Would you feel any better if the redwood were recycled material?
Who asked your “opinion?”
@CabinDoor you don't know what waste is, although you are an example of it.
WOW! I have seen small stuff but this BLOWS my mind
Words cannot describe how awesome this is!
Such patience and dedication! Well done.
