Martin Guitars Embraces The Satin Finish Trend

  • Satin finishes have often been limited to lower priced acoustic and electric guitars. It was generally seen as a cheaper way to manufacture and acoustic guitar which is the complete opposite of the orchestral string world. In the realm of cellos and violins, where resonance counts and acoustic instruments must fill an auditorium with sound, thinner satin finishes were the choice of high end instruments with gloss finishes only being found on cheap student models. Now, there is a trend in the higher end acoustic guitar market to embrace satin finishes for both economical reasons and musical ones. Martin has just released their D-28 Satin and D-18 Satin. Does it make the guitar better?

I've heard enough D-28s in my time, I'm 71 and my roommate in college had a 68' Martin D-28. This guitar has ascended to heaven and come back to earth with resonance and tonal pallet unheard of. What a difference the satin finish makes to the tonal balance, incredible and the guitar playing possibly some of the best on the internet.

The satin finish definitely had a warmer tone for a D-28…much easier on the ear. I have been wanting the 18 but would prefer the satin in the 28. Of course, anything Cooper plays sounds amazing!

That guitar sounds terrific! Great playing Cooper. I bought my first satin finish guitar this year. Honestly, I really have fallen in love with the satin finish. No finger prints, easy to keep clean with a little Music Nomad Guitar Detailer, and often a little less expensive. I'm a fan.

When I was 19 in 1973, I purchased my first Martin - a new D28. It came with a satin finish and I loved the look and sound. Still have the guitar. Sadly, a luthier I brought it to for some minor work (15 yrs ago) took it upon himself to buff out the satin finish to a trad gloss. But, guitar still plays and sounds great.

this is funny...I’ve been touting satin finished acoustic guitars for many, many years.
It was obvious to me, earlier in my playing career, that a satin finish is more resonant.
I still own some gloss finished guitars, but *most* of my favorites are all done with satin.
Nice to see this is becoming a “trend” among makers now.
Aside from experiencing the difference for myself, my logic was as Chris states here; orchestral instruments are satin when you get into very high-end instruments, so why are all these high end guitars glossy...?
    Peace. 🐰💙🎸🎶🤝✌️

It breathes! I just purchased a Les Paul Standard ‘50’s Faded and it sounds AMAZING! The thin nitro makes a difference even on electric. More VOLUME, more DEPTH more ATRTICULATION etc. May get one of these! Great playing and sound! Oh my Les Paul is the fifth one I have owned and the BEST! Finish matters.

I can discuss all day long about visual preferencies, satin or gloss, natural vs sunburst and so on. But when I grab a guitar that sounds THAT good, being it satin or gloss will automatically be the last of my concerns

I'm happy to see satin finished guitars getting some love and respect. I have to admit, even as someone whose main guitar is a satin-finished lower/middle end Martin, that there's something lovely aesthetically about a glossy standard series guitar but I do like the sound of a satin finished guitar and I'm hoping eventually I can hear/play one of these in the flesh.

back in 2000 I think is when I bought a D-15 Rosewood Custom it came with a satin
and I hated the look so I did an old trick
I used some scratch X to help take off a bit of the satin, then I used some McGuires Gold and buffed it out with that
I have to tell you I can not count the times someone thought it was a D-28 and the sound OMG
it rings all day and the ton e is so even
And after all these years it only got better and is my go to guitar
I like gloss so this is not my cup of tea but some will like it to each their own is how I roll

If it comes down to a D28 versus an HD28, I would go for the D28 because of the non scalloped bracing. To me it gives a fuller mid range, which I want. And I like the Satin finish. Gloss may offer a bit more ding protection, but it is going to wear regardless. So why not choose the one that offers more resonance.

An A/B comparison with a standard D-28 with a Nitrocellulose finish and a Satin finish D-28 to hear any differences. Another channel had such a comparison, and while I could hear differences between the two, I wasn't certain that I was hearing the finish or the difference in soundboards. Either way, someone making a purchasing decision should go for what they want. Some of these differences aren't worth quibbling about unless you're a nerd (Yay, nerds!).

Satin vs gloss isn't a fair comparison on orchestral instruments because they don't use nitro. If a guitar was finished in french polish or shellac, it would be on only the highest end ones and the most time consuming to apply.

Hi! I want these guitars!!! How come there is no Japanese production of old model models ? ( YAMAHA L-5 -L-8, 9 10 etc or old FG 340,440 series etc. the beautiful ones from the 70s-80s and early 90s ?? ) New Yamaha models are not as beautiful as old ones. The old Yamaha models have a better design and line the bridge is more beautiful and the shape of the harmonic case of the guitar is less round. I love the old Yamaha style and today known with great regret that they have also changed the pickguard design on the new Yamaha FG9 series; the pickguard seems too round and less tapered it is not as beautiful as the old-fashioned one still in use on the Yamaha of the L series or on the FGX5. Innovation does not necessarily have to be change and distort the design of a guitar!!
