Bushcamp - Finally Getting the Fridge Running Off Solar at the Offgrid Cabin

  • In this video we install an inverter and get our wiring figured in order to run the small mini fridge that I have in the offgrid cabin. We used a relatively inexpensive 900w energizer inverter and the fridge seemed to work great while running off of the 200w solar system that we have at the cabin.
Join my dog and I at our wilderness homestead in the Canadian North. This channel features videos on off-the-grid lifestyle and building, trapline adventures, hunting, fishing, trucks and much more!
I live off the land in a self reliant and self sufficient lifestyle. The land provides me with everything I need. My offgrid cabin is solar powered, heated by a wood stove and most everything I eat comes from the land; fish, eggs from my chickens, and many different wild game species. The lifestyle I live is essentially expense free and blesses me with the opportunity to do whatever I please.
In the winter months we head out on the trapline and ethically harvest fur bearing animals. Through moderate and sustainable methods I snare and trap these animals and work on, and sell the pelts at auction which provides a decent income for me to invest in my off the grid homestead and lifestyle.

Hey friends, fridge is still running great here. we have been having pretty good weather here with good sun so i havent been able to test how it will work in a long period of overcast just yet. So i cant quite tell you with certainty that it is working perfectly just yet unfortunately. It is highly likey that i will modify my solar system to some extent for more additions and improvements, but we will play it by ear here and add more panels and such if need be. Thank you for watching and all the best to everyone

      FOR SHED LUMBER,
Go to local lumber mill, buy truck loads of first and second cuts (they sell em cheap). Use table saw to take live edges off second cuts, use those for inside walls of shed. Take bark off the first cuts use table saw to put straight edge on first cuts and use those for exterior walls.
To seal exterior walls mix oil (walnut, tung, or raw linseed) with pine tar and real pine turpentine. Heat it OUTSIDE USING DOUBLE BOILER until it just starts to boil, then paint that on exterior. They used to use that mixture to seal the wooden dories being used in the east coast cod fishery in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and is similar to how the Japanese traditionally sealed houses (linseed oil after burning the exterior of the wood - “Shou Sugi Ban” or “Yaki Sugi.”)
Never use “Boiled Linseed Oil” (BLO) from the store, it has Chemical Driers and is the stuff that spontaneously combusts as it is oxidizing “drying” and burns down buildings.... google Dorothy Ainsworth in Oregon, she built an 1800 sq ft log cabin and was sealing it with BLO. she laid out the used towels flat after cleaning g them, there was still enough BLO in them that they spontaneously combusted and burnt down her cabin...... then she built it again....... she is awesome!

Here’s an idea for your “kitchen layout”... build a shelf off to the right (as you look at it) of your existing table the same height as the table. Put your fridge on it! You can then turn the fridge towards the table and be able to fully open the door. It will give you more storage space under the fridge! You won’t have to bend over to open the fridge and you better see what’s inside. It will bring your wiring closer together.

Just something that you can have two sides a front and a top but not nail it to the wall and then you could just slide it forward when you need to get to the battery and such. Just an idea. You’re a clearly very intelligent, well read and talented man.....However...you can handle a knife, power tools, hatchets and axes but you seem to struggle with a fork? And I’d really like to see you taking better care of yourself as far as food goes now you’ve got refrigeration. Maybe start getting some fresh game and veggies in there because whole packs of bacon coke and chocolate milk isn’t going to keep you good in the bush forever! Much love and take care bro

I have one of the little one burner Coleman stove to make coffee. Uses a small one pound propane container, easy to back pack. It has worked great on many a moose, sheep, rain deer hunt in central Alaska. Makes all feel great, especially after my friend (a big man) sprained his ankle on the tundra. Could not even walk. But we had coffee while waiting on helicopter to come pick his ass up the next morning. You can get a hose to hook it to a 20 pound or larger propane bottle for the cabin very inexpensive hose. Also a rocket stove is awesome, just depends on how much time you might want to spend getting it going and your location. On the solar thing, I suggest you go to the u-tube channel on Tin Hat Ranch and his Ultimate guide to DIY off grid solar. He has it right and you sure as hell do not need a sulfuric acid battery emitting those gases off in your sleeping area. I love your videos. Makes me wish I was young again. Good batteries are not cheap, however, your life is worth more. Looking forward to the next one. Have a awesome week.
