As one of your South African subscribers, it was really nice to see some of our old Air Force getting some love on this channel. Thanks GS ✌🏻 Would definitely love to see a SAAF Gripen video in the future too 😁
I’m glad to see this, a lot of my family served in the SADF during our wars in Angola and nowadays Namibia including my grandfather who was a mechanic who worked on the South African Mirages
No way! My granddad also worked on SAAF Mirages. IIIs or F1s? On a side note, Aerges said they would be willing to produce more F1 variants after they finish the F1M. Considering that the Iraqi F1EQ has very little information available, as Dassault destroyed all documents regarding the F1EQ, the next best option would be an F1AZ in my opinion. The AZ would be different enough from the other F1 variants in DCS, which would make it worth modeling. Plus, there’s easily accessible information online and several examples on display in museums. The F1AZ would be perfect!
@@rhysgoodman7628 Pretty sure they have listed all the mirage f1's that will be flyable on the store page those being the CE, EE, BE and M models. Things may change in the future though who knows.
@@AndrewH2791 yeah, I’m saying that they said they would be willing to make more after they finish those four. Aerges themselves said that a while ago.
Dassault: Look at those Delta wings on the MiG. That's the way to go, we need to get back to that for the new M2K. MiG: Look at those swept wings on the Mirage. That's the way to go, we need to get back to that for the new MiG-29. And tell Sukhoi too!
I must say, it seems like a much more fair and fun fight when it's between these older cold War aircrafts rather than all these modern high AOA super maneuverable 5th gen fighters. This feels like the pilots are actually working for that win. Great fight as always
I wonder how many people realize how formidable the SADF were in the 70s and 80s. You can not imagine my joy when I saw this Mirage is South African. I walked around an F1 in Stellenbosh a while ago (it's not there anymore, curiously), a formidable relic from the past. Thanks for including this!
The missiles you've used in a first fight were R-60M from 1982, they were capable and far more modern then MiG-21bis itself. Magic-1 missile you used on Mirage is from early 1970 - it's a decade earlier missile than Soviet R-60M. Both MiG-21bis and Mirage F.1C were from very early 1970s, even though MiG-21 had different, earlier variants as well. Thx, great video!
The Angolan MiG-21's were MF variants and during the engagements of 1981 and 1982 they were equipped with R3S's, the R-60 came later, probably when MiG-23ML's were delivered.
@@bazejs8084 R-60M saw mass production in 1978 magic 1 is 1973/74, regular R-60 time arrival was even earlier then French magic 1 but due too the secretness of the program it officially entered service on 18 december 1973
The South African DCS guys on FB are working at breakneck speed to make accurate CZ and AZ skins - even the pilot's shoulder-patch flag will be historically correct. Should be in the user files before very long...I am waiting for those too, and flying French AdeL'A in the meantime.
My analysis of the fight (for what its worth...) This turned into a 100% pilot skill contest. The F1 is the superior platform here, but lack of familiarity with its flight characteristics hamstrung it in both encounters. It was pretty apparent that both pilots were far more comfortable in the MiG 21, which makes sense - because its been on the platform for ages.
Another challenge for the Mig-21's was that the V-3 Kukri worked with a helmet mounted sight. The A model Kukri had poor performance but the B model Kukri was about equal to the J model Aim-9. Which for the time mid 1970's to mid 1980's was pretty good given South Africa's situation. And thanks for another excellent video.
Off-bore, they had a potential mind-numbing 90 degrees, though 45-70 was more typical in all exes - all with the Armscor lightweight LDR array on the helmets, a full decade before all other systems in Russian and Western fighters. The CZ and AZ were the most deadly fighters in Southern Africa for 20 years for that reason alone.
The HMS was an option, but rarely used due to its weight. It wasn't comfortable at all during hard manuvering. The V3B also had its manuvering limits although Armscor brochures don't specify the rear aspect only limits of the missile. It was a good missile, but was no world beater. Matter of fact only the Strike F1AZ's carried the V3B. The interceptor F1CZ's carried the M550 when deployed on operations.
@@diesirae8954 Not entirely - I'm taking this from an Armscor video on SABC TV in 1984-86 region. the system was being demonstrated in a Mirage III R2Z, with the LDR + pencil light beam on the firing helmet, and an illuminated reticle on the visor for off-bore missile-head guidance to tone....

The Cold War era fighters have such limited views from the cockpit. Never really thought about it till watching these videos. The canopies are divided into multiple sections and the metal joining the sections really does impair the pilot's view. The old Migs, the Mirage, the F14; all have some limitations. Current pilots are certainly lucky with near 360 views.
very good video and very good use of both planes, as for the mig-21 use the same tactics of both, use lowered flaps and additional burning to get the most out of the plane in turns and close to the ground 🤨🤨

fascinating channel, really have enjoyed the vids and the commentary (that often drives me out to find definitions of all the terms) -- just wanted to add this funny thought that occurred to me during this video: The tech and science behind these aircraft is so refined, yet the crafts' purpose is solely designed for destruction. what a world. Just another "what if" moment. have a nice day everyone.
Seems like a really poor design choice on the mirage to have that alpha warning at a point where it’s expected to go off in routine maneuvering. Alarm fatigue means the pilot will learn to ignore the warning which could have disastrous consequences. A two-stage alarm where there’s a warning first, which is just advisory, as opposed to an actual alarm when something bad is happening; seems wiser. Harassing the pilot with alarms gets in the way of their situational awareness as well.
The SAAF painscheme of the era was beautiful, they just need some mild corrections on the details: the national insignia should have the sprinbok inset, not the eagle (the eagle is the current insignia). Also, some placement issues (ejection seat warning should be under the canopy, and insignia further forward on the sides, just behind the air intakes). But I'm nitpicking, it's just great to see a genuine South African colour scheme in DCS!
The DCS ZA FB group guys are working at breakneck speed to correct this - and the project is almost finished, in a weekend ! We are going to get historically correct CZ and AZ skins (Kasteelle met goue springbokkies op die vlerkies, en oranje-blanje-blou op die stert) - and the last one will be the 'Milk Truck' AZ. while R-60s might have the flare resistance of a magnifying glass, and a range worse than the earliest model AIM-9s, they can still pull a really respectable amount of G's. not 100% sure but I believe among the order of 20-30G, even
The important factor is that where R-3S is limited to 1.6-2 g at launching platform, the R-60 (non-M) allows 7g, and maximum overload for the missile is 47 g, meaning it can track a target pulling 12 g (3.9:1 ratio, generally it is taken as 3-5:1 ratio. Example AIM-120C-5 can only pull 30g (some speak about 20 g) limiting target interception capability to 7.5-8 g). The R-60 lacks in the range (at sea level 0.25-1.5 km, at altitude 0.3-8 km), but unlike AIM-9 or R-3 and other missiles at the time, you had seeker uncaged and have excellent capability to turn, until R-73 came out, it was most agile missile. But most importantly is its fuzing, as the warhead was capable to destroy target at 300 meters from the launch, where example AIM-9 required 2.5 km (about 5 seconds acceleration) to fuze the warhead after launch. That is why you couldn't go use AIM-9 at close ranges as only choice was to use gun. Again, DCS doesn't simulate this old AIM-9 missiles limitation, giving huge advantage to its operators.
The reason the Angolan air force lost so many jets was the South African air force of the time was among the best in the world. Very different story these days though.
I am not sure they lost that many.... IIRC they lost 3 mig 21's while getting one air to air shootdown by a mig 21. The SAAF lost 2 F1's to ground fire but were able to shoot down 4 aircraft. IIRC, mig 23's didn't get any air to air kills either.
The problem is not with the SAAF itself but rather the government and the constant budget cuts. They're still extremely capable, and the fact that they are able to operate at the level they do while being hampered by all the funding issues is a testament to that. It's really sad to see how the Defence Force gets treated by the government as a whole to be honest.
It almost looks like the F1 is using the same afterburner texture as the mod all the way back in the days of LOMAC (Lock On: Modern Air Combat, the VERY first game in the series that DCS is still based on to this day, then came FC1 (Flaming Cliffs), FC2, and FC3. I still have my LOMAC disc and packaging, same with the OG Halo CE PC port)
I'd agree. The Magic 2's were great during that time period. R60M's are out matched in every way vs the Magic 2's. However, the 21Bis probaly get's more R60's it could carry iup to 6 and im not sure how many Magic 2's the Mirage F1 carried.
In reality it was none. The SAAF only had access to the Matra 550 Magic 1 as the Magic 2 only came about in the mid 80's. Only two would be carried in service. One on each wingtip.
You should do the US vs Russia thing again but with the rule that you can't choose the same jet twice so it's more interesting. Do like 5 or 6 rounds so you can have different engagements.

It's really sad to see how the Defence Force gets treated by the government as a whole to be honest.
the beeping horn can be disabled by the third switch from the top left of the weapon selector pad
However, the 21Bis probaly get's more R60's it could carry iup to 6 and im not sure how many Magic 2's the Mirage F1 carried.
only 2 ingame
In reality it was none. The SAAF only had access to the Matra 550 Magic 1 as the Magic 2 only came about in the mid 80's. Only two would be carried in service. One on each wingtip.
gotta take a hat down to your casual high aspect gunnery.
anyways how do you padlock the opponent (move your virtual head)?
can we turn the beeping off. holy f
Day 1 of asking for an F35 vs a Hot Air Balloon
Maybe the detached Fox-2 was the MiG's secret off-boresight capability.
Nice vid
You forgot to use the combat flaps of the Mirage. Would have been easier I think.
You should do the US vs Russia thing again but with the rule that you can't choose the same jet twice so it's more interesting.
Do like 5 or 6 rounds so you can have different engagements.
I don't think the Mig was out of action, I think the pilot just ejected to go get his missile back. :^)
GS, "Yeah, I'll swap planes. I don't care what you put me in, I'll kill you with it."
Great flying, but the MiG 21 made the Mirage F1 work for it.
I’ve noticed that most fights comes down to the skill of the pilot.
That AoA beeper is enough to make me not want to buy that module
And with flaps down on the first round…
She fights better at slow speeds with flaps down
