  • What's it like trying to fix the most infamously hard to fix digital compact cassette deck ever made? Well, I've got one here and we're going to find that out today. This deck is basically here so I can practice my SMD rework skills. I do NOT expect this to end with it working. But that's not going to stop me from trying to fix it.
If you're into DCC, do not buy this model. EVER. It's a one-off design by Tandy (Radio Shack) made in the USA that does not readily interchange boards with other DCC machines. Matter of fact, just don't buy broken first generation machines at all. If they haven't been fixed yet by 2024, you're in for a bad time.

Holy crap at first I was like “made in Texas” what is he talking about? Surely it’s a rebadged Pioneer like many Optimus at this time. NOPE, sure enough sticker on the back says “custom manufactured in USA”. That’s very very rare to see on a high end RS product. Odd they chose this one to “go it on their own”. And looking at the crude internal construction it definitely looks it. I remember when this unit came out it and the Tandy “Zoomer” PDA were the features of the RS catalog that year. Sad that the digital failures on these DCC decks are almost a universal guarantee.

21:09 Hah Greetings from Bulgaria 👍If those caps are bulgarian made, you can expect Japan or German quality!

They're Japanese - Oscon was a Sanyo brand name until Panasonic bought them out. Love that eBay seller in Bulgaria - I've bought stuff from him before. He sells lots of hard to find parts.

The read/write board has completely failed on it. It's beyond repair... it needs the entire read/write board replaced. Not worth the cost to do it.
