Prince might be the only one who was on the covers of guitar, bass, keyboard and drum magazines. I love his funky and jazzy piano playing in rehearsals like the song '17 days'. His father was a jazz pianist.

Your reaction said it all. I feel the same way every time I hear a Prince record. When u get a chance, check out Prince song "just as long as we're together ", where you 'll hear 17 yr old Prince playing every instrument, singing every part. He played like James Brown because James made people want to dance, that s why Prince performed the song differently than the released version. This was Prince touring w a 14 piece band. The sax, Eric Leeds, said he didn't even like Prince s music, he didn't like Prince stopping the song every 30 seconds, but somehow they made magic together. Prince did say James Brown had his band stop on a dime, that's what he wanted for his band. If u get a chance, watch this concert, this was Prince 1988, one of the best shows. You 'll hear different genres, high energy, and a lot of dancing. This was a typical Prince show. U gave a dope reaction. ua-cam.com/video/5AyoxNQiVDg/v-deo.html

Oh honey child, don't I know it.....I always let it be known how blessed I am to have had the honor of being in attendance to several Prince concerts....and have been a Prince fan for over 40 years......I was 25 or 26 when I first started listening to Prince....back in 1978....and as much as I love other artist such as Jimi Hendrix, Parliament-Funkadelic and many others, Prince is my all time favorite. And he is the G.O.A.T......I used 2 tell family and friends that we would still be listening 2 Prince and going to his shows in our 70 and 80's....I just celebrated my 69th birthday and I am still down with " His Royal Badness" and if he were still here, I would still be going 2 his concerts.......

It cracks me up to see people react to Prince. It baffles me that people didn't know how talented he was. You don't have a 40 year career and sold out concerts in the matter of minutes until the day you died if you weren't gifted. You are so right he could do EVERYTHING at a high caliber!!

Wind and brass instruments (Horn, saxophone, trombone, etc) are the ONLY instruments he couldn't play, but he hired the best (including James Browns ex band member Macio Parker) when he wanted horns. GOATS only work with the best, thats what makes them the GOAT.

You were bamboozled into that MJ nostalgia act.
Prince NEVER looked back. Yes, he played hits. But his shows was always music first hand. If you're talking about musicianship, it's not even a close match so cut that argument out of the discussion. Prince never had a PR-Machine who told you how great he was. He let you decide through music what your real emotions were. His biggest mistake was not to release every tour on video during the 80's. We only got two really true Live Shows. Syracuse 1985 Purple Rain tour and LoveSexy Dortmund 1988. Although, those two are enough for G.O.A.T. status.

Im 54yo. I saw him in concert once. He could play around 30 instruments! That is just one of the things he brought to his fans.
The closest multi-instrumentalist that is on the music scene now (IMHO) is Bruno Mars. He's not on the same level as Prince. I think Bruno can play 5 or 6 instruments. On one of Bruno's best is a Super Bowl performance where he starts out on drums. During his drum segment, he plays a military cadence. That's a departure of the times he's been on guitar or keys/piano.

Aside from the BANGING performance, always influenced by James Brown, this was such a statement about the U S. Note the RBG/Garvey's Liberation flag hung in the background (many miss it). FYI: Those of us of a certain age remember when he was highly critical Reagan Administration (as most POC were in the U.S.) at least since the Controversy album. A lot of the music he was making at the time was about sex in the thick of HIV/AIDS and about/against the War On Drugs initiative that was destroying black communities as much as crack (David Simon, journalist at the Post and writer of "The Wire" show, once said what crack didn't destroy, the War On Drugs did). Prince was writing his butt off about this stuff and pondering it all spiritually, as he always does in everything he writes. Even during that tour in France, he was upset/spoke up about the lack of access to the concert (affordability and treatment) to Afropeans/Black and Brown French youth.
