Gripen is a good aircraft, but in Finland it lost to F-35 mainly due to lack of weapons that can be attached and available upgrades to it and because it is still sort of prototype. Finland cant afford to be the tester of these aircarfts. We have bad experience with NH-90 helicopters that needed a decade of upgrades and updates until it was fully functional. Also the political factor was probably a big thing in this decision. We used MIG fighter before the collapse of USSR, after the collapse it was sort of statement to use US made aircrafts instead of USSR made, to tie us more to the west. We were tied politically to USSR although we were independent nation and we "had" to buy half of aircrafts from USSR.

Many people don’t understand that turnaround time is more important than number of fighters. Your average US airbase with 200 aircraft will only have 100 available to fly at any one time, SAAB can have 100 aircraft and 99 will be green for flying at the same time. Not to mention almost every other aircraft needs a day for a full combat refit in the case of standard battle damage and flight deterioration. SAAB can be battle ready within the hour even in the case of heavy battle damage, because all the parts are really easy to switch out
Ukraine is going to have Gripen (saga animal "Gryphon" in English), political support is overwhealming. And Ukranian pilots have been flying them in Sweden. So it seems Ukraine will be operating a mix of F16 and Gripen airplanes. They communicate fine, so they can also operate together effectively. (However operating groups of Gripen gives exceptional situation awarenes and target information.) Gripen is rather more comparable to F35 than F16.
One of the greatest benefits for Gripen is the cost per flight hour. Super rich countries might afford to give their F35 pilots 100's of flight hours worth of training but Gripen pilots get the same hours at a fraction of the cost. And lets not talk about F22 hangar decorations... two drops of rain and they're grounded.
The Gripen is a cool and capable jet fighter no doubt. Our American pilots can spend all the time they need in a simulator. In addition they do get hundreds of hours in training flying the Jet. The biggest advantage of the F 22s and F 35s is STEALTH! But all the way around it is the best Fighter ever. At least for now. Look at it like this. The F22 has been in combat operations for a long time more than a decade. All over the world. Guess how many have been shot down? NONE! If one of America's enemies was able to shoot a F 22 down. They would have it on the news all over the world. The F 35s are just getting into combat now. Israel has used their F 35s to bomb and destroy targets deep inside Syria. They have advanced Russian Radar. The F 35s flew in bombed multiple targets and flew home. Now I ask you could any other Fighter Jet do that ? They used ground Penetrating radar to bomb underground targets. Say what you want about the 22 and 35 . But they are the most deadly aircraft Jet Fighter's ever.....so far . Just think America is already developing the next level of Jet Fighter's now. If you sent 4 Gripens to take out one F 22 . My money's on the F 22 . All day long.
No just because I said what I said. Don't think for one second that we don't love and respect our Swedish allies. You guys Rock! Much love from America
And that it can lift of from normal roads instead of a prefect flat airfield. So taking out/bombing Swedish airfield don't mean fighters will stop flying. Maybe that's what you meant with F22
@@larrybone4349 afaik the best they have is the s300, which has been/is being replaced by the s400 in Russia. The f22 hasn't fought a single actual NPO, nor has the f35. They are also much more finicky, so you better hope you have a perfect runway that the opponent doesn't just bomb
IIRC The Griffin is also very intentionally designed for dispersed use. Taking off, landing, and refueling from local highways, with no vulnerable airfields needed. That makes it unique, the only fighter that can operate indefinitely even when all airbases have been destroyed. A HUGE advantage. Some of your b-roll footage shows that clearly.

It depends on how you look at it. If you look at military tech, Sweden is pretty much spearheading alot of that department (as pointed out in this video) Large chunks of US gear, vehicles and ammo are either Swedish made, made with swedes or on swedish blueprints. We also have a really high standard for our troops, just ask the Marines who have been over here to compete with the Swedish Rangers. A single Gotland class Submarine sunk the US flagship Aircraft carrier "The Ronald Regan" in the war games a few years back. From this perspective, we *really* capable. However... We are only a country of 10m people. Our entire population is less than Los Angeles. Even if we had the best tech in the universe and if every single soldier were literally Rambo, in almost any war we would be ridiculously outnumbered. Opposing a country like Russia, China, US or even India we would be outnumbered like 500 or 1000 to 1. So yea, from that perspective, we are pretty much defenseless. We could probably do some damage, possibly even massive damage, before we went down... But we *would* go down if it was a 1on1 fight, there is no doubt about it.

So do I. The Gripen or the Rafale. But unfortunately, that won't happen. The US will never let us. Remember the Arrow ? So we'll pay through the nose for the underachieving, overpriced F-35. So frustrating.
Why not pick both and mix it up a little.
@@samcan9953 Please tell us how the US will influence Canadian procurement.

Although, to be fair, being a co-equal NORAD partner was far more valuable than building the Avro Arrow. So, that's how. Raw cash or a better deal.
Sweden has always been good at making planes
They also have an insane turnaround time, of less than 10min with minimal ground crew
That and the cost per hour is very cheap $4700. Whereas the venerable F16 is $7000. So it has a lot going for it.
@@metatechnologist mainly due to the easy maintenance, like it’s probably the most economical 4+ Gen aircraft you can get
Truly a SAAB, decent price, great quality, long lasting… I miss Saab cars 😞
Many people don’t understand that turnaround time is more important than number of fighters. Your average US airbase with 200 aircraft will only have 100 available to fly at any one time, SAAB can have 100 aircraft and 99 will be green for flying at the same time. Not to mention almost every other aircraft needs a day for a full combat refit in the case of standard battle damage and flight deterioration. SAAB can be battle ready within the hour even in the case of heavy battle damage, because all the parts are really easy to switch out
Being ukrainian i am in love with Swedish fighter jets!!!
Way to go Sweden! 👍
Stay free and strong. 💪🤛
The F22 has been in combat operations for
a long time more than a decade. All over the world.
Guess how many have been shot down? NONE!
If one of America's enemies was able to shoot a F 22 down. They would have it on the news all over the world.
The F 35s are just getting into combat now.
Israel has used their F 35s
to bomb and destroy targets deep inside Syria.
No they don't the Gripen E costs $27,000 per hr all in just like every other similar fighter jet they ALL fall in that $22k to $30K per hr range
Man I love Swedish Aerospace 🇸🇪
Gripen, the coolest fighter jet ever!
A powerful wake-up call to American defense contractors, especially their software architects.
Gripen looks like one badass little jet! "Sneaky Snake"...🐍
Haha sneaky snake! 😂 should be its callsign.
Canada should be buying the Gripen. For self defense speed and range in the far North trump stealth. 1/5 cost per hour vs the F-35 is a bonus.
Uhhhhm, pretty much every fighter can refuel in the air. And if every air base is destroyed, you have land eventually.
@@9hk38f You are wrong my guy not every military aircraft can refuel in highways actually there is only few that can do so and it's because of their size or other factors

"Has no REAL stealth either" That's not true. You should have said. "Has no physical stealth". It has plenty stealth with it's EW suite.
Stealth is defined as low radar observabililty. EW jamming lights the source up like a beacon.
Your thinking there is so one dimensional.......
I have two Gripens at home, and I must admit, it is quite the way to travel to the office or clients.
Sweden should field test them in combat in Ukraine
Not sure Sweden needs to be concerned with the Russian military. Hell, I’m almost even odds on Liechtenstein holding their own.
Sweden builds excellent fighters (4++) no doubt and their ability to use "rough airfields) only adds to their worth...but...when the rest of the major competitors are building 5th and 6th generation aircraft, the Swedes are designing 4+++ aircraft, you have to ask "Why" ? If there's one thing I still have any faith in is Sweden's judgement regarding what is best for Sweden.
Sweden seems to have great judgement in many ways all the time these day: Sane compared to most in things such as the most sane covid policies, no authoritarian lockdowns more or less. AI research project and development with a bigger budget than any other venture in Swedish history. Stockholm is becoming the Silicon Valley of Europe if it growth continues. Military funding and defense is being priortized. Leader in number of start ups. ..
on a side note, absolutely no one anywhere is concerned about Sweden in any way, shape or form.
Anybody know reasons why Finland preferred F-35 over this? Gripen looks really suited for that territory. Is it maybe because of the radar blocking / jamming capabilites and trust that sweden participates if needed
Corporate/ government kickbacks and bribes most likely

The F35 is more costly but is much MUCH better than the Grippen, Eurofighter, and Rafale in general, there is a reason it is a 5th gen fighter and not a 4/4.5 gen fighter like the rest of the Europeans fighters (including Russia's Sukhoi btw).

Cool. I thought Sweden was just defenseless
It depends on how you look at it.
If you look at military tech, Sweden is pretty much spearheading alot of that department (as pointed out in this video)
Large chunks of US gear, vehicles and ammo are either Swedish made, made with swedes or on swedish blueprints.
